Meet the White Boots

Sweater – Oak + Fort / Dress – Urban Outfitters / Boots – Something Navy

Believe me when I tell you that I never thought I could pull off these white boots. Even as I tried them on, I couldn’t help, but think that I was making a reckless shopping decision. I was torn. They looked good and I knew I had to have them, but boy, did I battle with these breaking them in. As you can imagine, they don’t look comfortable and don’t become comfortable until maybe seven wears. That being said, white boots were all that I longed for this past fall season despite a numbing effect. It’s a gamble in a place like San Francisco, but everywhere I went, they were noticed and that validation alone is all I needed to make this purchase worth it.

I’ve been wanting to share this post for a while because I was excited to tell you all about them. I also wanted to use this opportunity to talk about something else that has been on my mind. When you start a new job, you have this chance to start over again. If you wish, you can reinvent your work wardrobe too with some newly tailored trousers, a pair of steel blue boots, or midi skirts. At the time of this purchase, I had been just a couple of months into my new job. In tech, it doesn’t matter what you wear. Hell, in my first job I would wear oversized sweaters and leggings to work. Back then, that look was considered “in.”

In 2019, it’s not unacceptable, but it’s not my choice for a work outfit. My new job was an opportunity to see if I could get others to perceive me the way I wanted to be perceived. Flats and sneakers weren’t allowed to come to work with me. From 2013 – 2017, I owned three different pairs of Tieks that I would rotate on the regular. Kevin got me into sneakers at a young age and I live in my Nike Flyknits and adidas UltraBOOSTs. I just didn’t see a place for them at work. In my heels, I felt that confidence. I felt taller and because of that I let myself believe that I was taken more seriously. To be clear, no one has ever said to me that my shortness in height made them not take me seriously or respect me.

This was something that I brought upon myself. From time to time, I might wear my sneakers to work. They don’t bode well with the carpet so I’ll slide across them from time to time and nearly slip. The heels hold some power. I feel different when I’m wearing them. They make me feel more put together whether I’m in a dress or if I’m in pants and a top, the heels are the instant boost. I’ve been in my role for nearly a year now and for some time, I started to believe this was all in my head. Then a couple of months ago at a happy hour a co-worker said to me “So, what is it like down there?”

“Down where?”

“You know, being your height.”

It was the most innocent ask, but at the same time it took me back to middle school when I knew the people asking me that question asked me because they were jerks. And then it came full circle for me. The heels are a work thing for me now, but it reminded me of a place I didn’t want to be in again. I didn’t want to feel looked down upon for my height and yes, believe it or not, even in your adult life someone can still make you feel small. I have spent many years embracing my petite stature. This was a weird little blip, but it reaffirmed my decision. The heels make me feel some sort of way. Maybe it sounds superficial, but the reality is I’m wearing them for myself and for others and it’s okay. In some sense, I feel like they protect me.

The Closet: March 2019

Sandy Liang Booth Pullover – $525

We may have curbed our spending habit, but that doesn’t mean we have to ignore the trends completely. I’m still keeping my finger on the pulse of trends because you just know that the markdowns will come once we hit the summer season. I might have to break my shopping habit at least for the next couple of weeks because Angel and I are headed on vacation! Since we’re friends, wear the same size and equally admire each other’s wardrobes, we’re doing something a little different for our trip. As we start to plan out our agenda for a whole week, we’ll also be visiting each other’s closets so we can outline together what we want to bring! What this means? Wearing our own clothes, sure, but also mixing it with each other’s clothes to make new outfits! Yes, we are quite unique.

The Closet: February 2019

Vince V-neck Bias Cut Dress$295 – $176.98

We are headed into spring territory! These posts are always so dangerous for me to write because they make my wallet weak. It’s easy to make a wishlist and even easier to make an online purchase. Like we mentioned in the last Closet post though, 2019 is all about being a little bit more financially responsible. Gone are the days where I would make a purchase on a weekly basis or whenever I was having a bad day. There are other cures for self love than spending money. Since we’ve got spring on the brain though, I’m starting to think about what dresses I am in need of. You’ll also see a number of heels in this post because some of my classics are getting worn down to the bone. As always, we’re seeking recommendations if anyone has any!

Holiday Gift Guide 2018

 Chanel N°5 The Bath Soap – $26

Readers, what kind of Christmas shopper are you? Every year, I tell myself that I know how much easier it is to shop online, but can’t bring myself to do it. I have managed to order a few online exclusives and a few items that be personalized since I just found out you can upload photo on socks, but for the majority of my shopping, I still go to the mall. I hate the crowds at the mall, but yet I love it at the same time. There’s a certain kind of holiday cheer that you can get from the mall that you just can’t get from putting items into your cart from your couch. So this year, I did a mix of both and like every year, I know I’ll find myself at the mall one or two more times for that extra last minute Christmas shopping.

Here are just a few items that I’ve caught on the interwebs that I think would make great gifts along with a couple of things that I might want for myself too!

Holiday Party Wear 2018

For Love and Lemons Marquee Maxi Dress – $270

Every year, holiday party season always comes up so fast! I’m excited this year to have a true holiday party with my current company and the opportunity to dress up. As soon as I discovered the date, I was off to the races. There are actually so many options this holiday season that I’m swooning over, but the trouble with every year is that I have in my mind what I already want. The hard part of that is that it often times is hard to find where that exists. Since I hold onto that dream of a dress for so long, I often don’t find it and find myself stressing last minute.

This year’s party will be on a Friday – a first for me! It’s also unfortunately the first year where Mandi and I won’t be getting ready together. I’ll be using my new favorite startup Glamsquad for hair and makeup though which I can’t say enough good things about. Lastly, I’ve got a couple of ideas in mind for what I want to wear, but I’m not quite ready to share that yet. What I do know is that I want to stay away from lace if I can and sleeves because we did that last year. If things don’t work out for me, at least I’ve got a post to fall back on.

To get into the spirit of creating this post, I just looked at last years post and am surprised at how much my tastes have changed in the last year. Since my party is earlier, I wanted to start this post early. We’re also going to release it earlier than any other year prior. Enjoy!

The Closet: July 2018

Lara Swimsuit Pale Blue – $165.94

I am headed out for my getaway later on this week so it’s no surprise that we’ve got vacation items on the brain! It’s been feeling quite chilly in the Bay so a trip to warmer temperatures is everything we need. For the first time in years, I’ve acquired three new swimsuits in one year and I do’t even want to quit! How delicious are some of these ones that I’m sharing with you below? And of course, for warmer evenings, there’s nothing more that you could want than easier slip dresses to toss on over your head. Raise your hand if you could live in summer mode forever. That’s us!

Grandma Buddy’s Christmas Trees

Sweater – Urban Outfitters / Vest – Uniqlo / Belt – Madewell / Denim – Levi’s / Boots – J. Crew

Can it be? Christmas in July?! Or is it really just a backlog of posts that I’m still getting to from the winter? 😉

Every winter, I look forward to heading up to a Christmas Tree Farm with Mandi and Eric to help them find the tree of their dreams. It’s a different one each time and that’s what makes this such an adventure. We’ve headed north, south and east and each time this idea of finding a new tree is so entertaining to me. We leave the day after I get back from my SoCal Thanksgiving trip and this year’s venture was the best because it included both brunch before and wine tasting after – a first for us!

It’s a special tradition that we have and though we didn’t know it at the time, this would be the last time we’d be doing this as Mandi and Eric are off to New York City this coming fall! More on that later…

Out of all the outfits that I’ve worn to the Christmas Tree farm, this one is the best because it truly embodies my inner lumberjack. If I lived outside the city surrounded by trees, this would probably be my every day uniform. The dark elements to the outfit give it the rugged vibe, but this gold Madewell belt is sort of everything, isn’t it?!

Channeling Blossom

Dress – Urban Outfitters / Sweater – Margaret O’Leary / Denim Jacket – Gap / Hat – Nordstrom / Booties – Vince Camuto / Sunglasses – Marc Jacobs

For once, there’s a lot going on in this outfit! There’s so much to love about it though. As I get older and my friends start to marry off, it means that I have many more weddings to attend than I ever did before. I’d be lying to you if I said that I hadn’t ever considered services like Rent the Runway before, but the truth is, I love owning my pieces. This year, I was convinced that I’d be able to re-wear my wedding guest dresses again and that’s exactly what I did. I wouldn’t feel good about only wearing something once and it allows me to stretch my creativity when I can pair something like a wedding guest dress with things I already have in my closet. This dress above was only the second time I had worn it with the first being at Mandi and Eric’s wedding back in September 2016. It looked a little bit different back then and it was styled in a more formal way.

Wearing it for a more casual day-to-day outfit brought to my attention that this dress is a little bit more sheer than I expected it to be! Thank goodness for the slip underneath, but even that made it seem like we were at risk sometimes. To make it more casual, I threw one of my favorite pullover sweaters onto it and added the denim jacket for an extra layer. The hat and the shoes matched the sweater and kind of felt like I was pulling the outfit together with these pieces. You also can’t see it, but I’m wearing a black choker, which looking back now, was probably not as necessary.

I couldn’t tell you what I was thinking of when I woke up that morning and put on this busy outfit. It did, however, remind me of one of my favorite 90’s icon – Blossom!

The Closet: March 2018

Warby Parker Coley frames in crystal – $95

We started off this post feeling extremely minimal, but a closer look will show you that we finally recognized it was spring. Therefore, COLOR! At least just a little bit sprinkled in. Spring time is typically the period when I refresh my closets, but I’m choosing to save a bit of money this year especially after all my travels so none of these will be bought. For now, they are just a part of my dream list and maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll snag at least one of these items. The thing I actually need though is a pair of new glasses! My current Warby Parker’s have been with me since 2012 and I’m pretty positive the prescription on those no longer matches my current one. If you had to pick one item from this list, what would you purchase?
