Cancelled: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

When I wrote back in May that the [Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Was No More] I was under the impression it was done for good. Now, I’m going to have to retract that a bit because at the time it was still just a rumor that it might be cancelled. My titling is a bit misleading, but now it’s not just a rumor. It was announced this week that the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show would not be happening this year. However, it’s still to be determined on whether it’s gone forever.

The brand has fallen under some major criticism this year. Aside from the fact that sales are down, people pointed out that it seemed like Victoria’s Secret was not only lacking in diversity, but also inclusivity by saying they wouldn’t hire transsexual models. It’s as if they think the only place they can show up is on sites like shemalehd.sex with that kind of exclusion. Growing up, Victoria’s Secret was a go-to brand for teenage girls. Was it because at the time, it was the only brand? The only brand that we could afford with our allowances? These days, I don’t think I know anyone in my circle of girlfriends that is still shopping there, do you?

2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Every year, I post about the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and those that read my post seem divided. Others, like me, are fascinated by the entire thing. There’s a few things to look forward to: the themes, the performances, the Fantasy Bra. Then there are those that are strongly against the show. They don’t believe in what it stands for, that it cuts down women, sexualizes them, makes others feel bad about themselves. I understand this point of view, of course. There’s a part of me though that understands that the women in these shows have worked hard for their bodies and that not everyone that is super thin has an unhealthy relationship with food.

I wanted to try and better understand this from a different side this year especially being someone that has had an issue with food. I follow a few of the models on Instagram: Taylor Hill, Kelsey Merritt, and Jasmine Tookes. The training that they do in preparation for these shows and the audition is year round. It’s not a sprint; it’s a marathon. I started working out more regularly this year by going to CorePower and don’t worry, I’m not going to become a fitness blogger by any means, but this shit ain’t easy. I’ll go to these classes, but there are probably a cumulative five minutes at least where I give up on my mat.

For myself, I have a lot of admiration and respect for models. My pet peeve is when people comment on their personal social media telling them to eat a burger. You don’t know them and it’s none of your business what they eat. Maybe I’m offended for them because I’ve had this told to me. It’s hard enough for me to make a decision about what to eat every day and how I’m going to eat, but now I have to consider what I eat so that it makes other people happy? Do you see how crazy that sounds? Let’s let people live and accept this show for what it is no matter what it may mean to each individual watching.

Getting off my soapbox slowly now… here are my favorite looks from this year. The show will change networks and air on ABC on December 2nd.

 

UPDATE: Executive Ed Razek made inappropriate comments this week directed at the transgender community and we don’t stand by it. He has since apologized, but we won’t forget. That being said this post has nothing to do with him at all and more on the models as people and individuals.

2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Full disclosure: I don’t actually shop for my intimates at Victoria’s Secret! I love watching the show every year though because of what a production it is and how over the years, the models are no longer just people on a runway, but you actually get to “know” the angels leading up to the big event. As time went on, Victoria’s Secret increased the number of angels and started giving us a glimpse into more of the behind-the-scenes so that we could begin relating to them. Now I know that some of the looks on the runway are really just for show and not going to be sold in stores, but that’s some of what makes this experience so fun, right? Here are my favorite looks:

Victoria Secret’s Latest Fantasy Bra

It’s almost that time of the year! I’ve been watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show since it was first broadcast on television and while I am not a consumer of their brand specifically, I do enjoy the production of the show. It’s interesting to watch the evolution of it from when it started up until now. You’ll notice that things were more simpler then, but these days we’ve got very elaborate designs, props, performances, and the infamous “Fantasy Bra” – typically worth a ton of money and worn by one of Victoria Secret’s angels. This year, Lais Ribeiro will have that honor and this is the $2 million bra that she’ll be donning down the runway.

The 2017 Champagne Night Fantsy Bra features almost 6,000 precious gemstones, with everything from sapphires, blue topaz and diamonds, weighing more than 600 carats. Not only is the bra a work of art, but it took almost 350 hours to hand-make the piece.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2015

Since the entire fashion show is such a huge televised production, the actual show is filmed almost a month early before it actually airs on CBS. There’s a whole lot to be excited about revolving the show including our favorite Lily Aldridge in the Fantasy Bra, performances by Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, and The Weeknd, and Kendall and Gigi’s debut on the VS runway. The Performance That Mattered at the VS Fashion Show

Ariana Grande of course. You know you’re doing something right when you’re performing a medley of your four hits at an event. Also I wasn’t able to include a video of Taylor Swift’s performance, but I loved seeing her perform “Style.” This was my first time ever hearing this song and it’s totally just a girl anthem that I can see myself belting out if I ever heard it on the radio. Also how qt was her moment with Karlie walking down the runway? Just date already.
