This Weekend

What We’re Watching: Nomadland

After watching the Golden Globe Awards last weekend, I’m feeling a bit of FOMO having not seen many of the films and television series that were nominated. Given the last year, you would think we’d be on top of it. Somehow we missed 75%. In an attempt to catch up, I decided to watch “Nomadland” after work today. It was high up on my list because the film’s director, Chloe Zhao took home a Golden Globe win! I’m naturally attracted to films that tell stories about different kinds of people. It’s one of the reasons why we love Lisa Ling’s “This Is Life.” “Nomadlife” balances showing us the perspective from Francis’s point of view as a nomad, but also from the outside looking in. It’s about strength, loneliness, loss and community all in one.

What We’re Listening To: Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic – Leave the Door Open

It was a week ago that I learned that Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak and Silk Sonic would all be teaming up together for an album. Believe it or not, we had this on the agenda to post about and then time got ahead of us. Now it’s one week later and the single is out alongside a music video. I can’t put my finger on what this single reminds me of, but it brings back old school laid back R&B vibes for me that I loved as a child. These days, music just doesn’t sound like this anymore and I’m nostalgic for this to come back.

What We’re Wearing: [Lunya Washable Silk Tank Set] – $178

Technically, we don’t own this yet and I’m still on the fence about it. I’ve been seeing Lunya all over my IG for the last year and while I’ve always been used to wearing whatever to bed. As I think about entering further into my 30’s, I’m wondering if I need adult woman pajamas. Also, is there anything better than washable silk? The price tag is hefty, but the reviews say they’re worth it!

What We’re Eating: Ju-Ni Chirashi Bowl

Indoor dining has opened up in San Francisco, but we’re not quite ready to do that just yet. It’s time for my monthly visit to Ju-Ni to snag their Chirashi Bowl for takeout and this Sunday we’re taking ours to the park.

Diary of a Song | Drivers License

I don’t watch this series consistently, but I’ve really enjoyed the ones I have seen. Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” is the song of the year so far in 2020 and took off in a whirlwind. It didn’t hurt that it became a viral sensation on TikTok and soon after it was a household name. All the drama aside, it is a beautiful piece. This episode doesn’t even touch on the drama at all and instead focuses on what makes the song so memorable and essentially a hit. While this was a breakout first hit, everyone is waiting on bated breath and wondering, ‘can she do it again?’

Minari’s Alan Kim on Jimmy Kimmel

I’m really regretting not watching this much earlier. Watching Minari win a Golden Globe despite not having seen the film yet was still emotional for me. I don’t know or why, but I’m so excited to be a part of the crowd that gets to watch this and try and share it with everyone I possibly can. Alan Kim is someone I’ve been following recently on Instagram because of the film and his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel will make your heart melt 100%.

An Afternoon with Prince Harry & James Corden

I really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Historically, we don’t get to see a lot of personality from the royal family and now that Prince Harry and Meghan have stepped back a bit, it’s nice to see him show a softer side and even a sense of humor. Him and Meghan Markle have been through quite a bit since they even became a couple. I hope that their new life in America is not only more stable for them, but safer on their health.

In this segment, Prince Harry get a real tour of Los Angeles (well, in 17 minutes) and the two compete against each other in an obstacle course.

Cover of the Day

Is it just me or did MTV’s “Unplugged” used to be more than 30 minutes? Things have been quiet lately in the BTS universe until we heard that they’d be featured in this upcoming episode. While we’ve been getting many performances of “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On,” fans wondered what the rest of the “BE” singles would be like. Not only did we get in the special with “Blue and Grey” and “Telepathy,” the guys also surprised us with a cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You.”

Nearly hitting our one-year anniversary with the pandemic, BTS gave us a song that would heal, but also a song that has brought them comfort over the years. I’m biased and obviously I would share every performance in a post here if I could, but I wanted to pick out my favorite. Someone asked me today if I thought their cover was better than the original. Honestly, I don’t think anything can ever top the original, but I enjoyed their arrangement of this song too. Did you know that Coldplay doesn’t let just anybody use their song whether it’s a cover or in film and television? Turns out they are quite selective and have turned down artists and money when they feel like their song being use might be disrespected. After this performance was released, Coldplay showed the group nothing, but support by leaving comments and re-sharing.

Song of the Day

All Star Opera – Be Right Back

Every so often, I find myself getting homesick for Seattle and the easiest cure to bring me back is listening to music from home. In case it wasn’t obvious, we haven’t been home in over a year due to COVID and it’s unlikely that we won’t be back anytime soon. All Star Opera is a group that formed after I left the city, but I’ve become a fan of theirs from afar. “Be Right Back” is a track that’s easy listening. It’s one that I would’ve listened to on a summer evening in Seattle driving on I-5. Instead, now I’m listening to it driving up the 101. It’s the same, but different. This track was released back in November on YouTube, but much more deserving of just 70 views so can we give it some PNW love?

Apple – Chinese New Year – Daughter

https://youtu.be/R113khNc4_4

With its release back in January and less than 5,000 views, I’m surprised that this hasn’t garnered more attention. This year, more than ever, stories surrounding both Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are significant. In the last week alone, I’ve become more educated on traditions and taboos around this holiday than ever before.

The Weeknd’s Super Bowl LV Halftime Show Performance

In case you missed it, The Weeknd’s Super Bowl Halftime performance was the most exciting part of last week’s Super Bowl. We didn’t care too much for the teams playing and we hoped it would at least be an exciting game, but it wasn’t. The Weeknd, however, delivered on a fun performance with all of his hits and what felt like a jab to the Grammys after their snub. We were secretly hoping that he’d play a song off of one of his older mixtapes, but that’s okay.

When Disney Makes You Choose A Side

Leave it to the younger generation to get the rest of us involved with a Disney love triangle. This is one of the reasons why I find TikTok to be such a darling. It has the ability to make things blow up and make you care about things you never would have previously. A few weeks ago, I noticed a trending sound – a new single – from a name I had never heard of before. Olivia Rodrigo, who is an actress on Disney+’s High School Musical show, apparently had her heart broken and wrote a gut wrenching song about it. The man taught her how to drive! And now that she does have her license, she can’t even use her license to drive over to his house because they are no longer together.

Also, I’d like to note that I’ve read and watched many TikToks about this scandal, but I feel like it isn’t confirmed that they actually were dating and just speculation. One half of the crowd actually believes this is all a PR scheme. Why? Because the boy in question and her co-star (nothing to write home about honestly) is now dating another Disney star, Sabrina Carpenter. Not only did Olivia and said guy, Josh, also release songs in the same time frame, but so did Sabrina!

Who really cares about the guy though? I’m going to drop both songs here and let you all decide which you prefer. Sabrina says her release is not in response to “Driver’s License,” but how can it not be? We know this can’t be a coincidence. Honestly, they are both bops. I just want to know why these two amazing ladies might be pining over some mediocre guy.
