How We Celebrate Wednesdays:

cocokelley

Readers!

I went to my first event hosted by Seattle blogger Cassandra Lavalle of coco + kelley yesterday with my co-worker and had a fabulous time. Additionally, it was my first time stepping foot into West Elm, which is pretty much heaven for a designer. I found myself wanting every little item and dreaming about my future home in which it could be furnished entirely by West Elm. I even came across the popular desk used by many of the bloggers that I idolize. It’s $300, but that’s okay. Someday, it could be mine!

The event was on entertaining guests and setting up parties for the upcoming spring/summer season. I loved this set up above because of the primary color theme and the spice rub takeaways for guests!

After the event, Toby and I decided to continue on with celebrating our Wednesday and went out to dinner at Tilkum Place Cafe – my first time! I actually worked with the restaurant before while in college when I had them sponsor an auction that I was working on, but I had never tried it before. Our first footstep into the restaurant was pretty much what sold us! We shared the clams (the special!) as an appetizer and Toby ordered the Savory Tart while I had the Roasted Vegetable Salad. It was the perfect meal for our Wednesday celebration and…just because!

Conversations From 20-Somethings

tumblr_ku02zxtNwC1qzyrwvo1_500

A couple of weeks ago, my former professor asked me if I would be interested in coming into one of her classes and talking about my post-grad life. I was excited about the idea because I absolutely love my university, but I am nervous about it because as much as I have learned in the last year, I’m not sure if anything I say will be able to prepare these students for what their life will be like outside of the Capitol Hill neighborhood and their Jesuit education.

When someone asks me about my life at college, I could talk their ear off. It is where I started this blog. It is the place that instilled in me the core values that I take into my life today. It provided me with opportunities that I never thought were within reach and I was able to imagine ideas and turn them into creations and traditions. There are many current students and graduated students who can relate to my feelings on our university and for that we have been given both a blessing and a curse.

{Follow Up} With Veronica Lim

Readers, I am so excited to be sharing the news with you that we will be catching up with all of our former guest post contributors! I first announced this back in January, but now it’s finally happening! This installment on Yow Yow! was well-received by all of you, our friends, family, and community. It’s been over a year since we’ve last heard from our contributors so I thought it would be great if we could check in with them and see what’s going on in their lives, how their views have changed, and how they have essentially grown up. First up is my dearest friend Veronica Lim. For a refresher, check out her first post here and her follow-up below.

Katie sent me a follow-up guest post email nearly two months ago. Now I can’t say I’ve been too busy to respond or that I couldn’t muster up the right words to answer the questions she laid out. Rather, it passed me by as much as I let it. I mean that in the sense that I didn’t want to sit down and reflect on how I’ve changed or may not have changed. I wanted to pretend as if I didn’t need to because if I post-poned it then maybe it hasn’t quite happened. But the reality of the situation is that I wrote a guest post for Katie over a year ago and much has changed with the world since then. And I’ve changed whether or not I meant to.

These days I don’t press snooze 12 times before waking up. I became a little bit of an adult by waking up every morning and getting ready for work. With coffee in hand, I catch the bus, find my way to Lower Queen Anne, and spend 8 hours thinking about work lyfe before commuting back home. Perhaps this sounds monotonous and dreadful. The kicker is – I absolutely love the experience life outside of Seattle University provides. These days life is wrapped up in a place called Marx Foods, my apartment, family, and the friends that I’ve been fortunate to keep post college.

Cardiknox

I’ve been receiving some pretty interesting requests and propositions to collaborate with Yow Yow lately in my inbox, but this morning I received an email from someone that I didn’t expect at all. First off, you only need to read through the first few pages of Yow Yow! to know that I love all things having to do with Seattle music. I’ve been a supporter since I was a wee little teenager and Seattle music will always have a special place in my heart.

Every now and then I get new music in my inbox that I end up checking out. Today’s band is a Manhattan duo called Cardiknox comprising of Lonnie Angle and Thomas Dutton. Immediately, the name Thomas Dutton caught my eye and I had realized that I used to see Dutton perform in his band Forigve Durden throughout my teenage years at local shows. Such a surprise!

Anyways, Cardiknox’s 80′s inspired beats and catchy hooks will take you back to the days…that I wasn’t even alive for. It’s definitely something you can jam too and would make for some great music at your next party. Check out their two tracks here.

Yow Yow! Show Me How You Werk

suchinpak tweet

!!!!

It all started with a BuzzFeed article…that led to a tweet…to a conversation…and then a solid.

Readers, I am so excited to announce to you all that we will be doing an interview with the lovely and beautiful SuChin Pak. Since I was 11 years old and watching MTV, SuChin has been an inspiration and a role model to me. I remember seeing her on television and telling  friends and family – “I want to be her! That’s what I want to do when I’m older. I want to be in front of the camera and on MTV reporting the news.” That didn’t exactly happened, but she was someone that I looked up to over the years and was how I became interested in journalism. I actually had the chance to meet her a few years back, but having her on Yow Yow! now is something that I never dreamed could happen. For the longest time (and I thought this was going to be the year and now it is!) I wanted to create a new interview series focused on strong, empowering, and confident women that were “making it.” I am thrilled to be kicking this series off with SuChin and I know it’s going to be a great one.

Additionally, I’d like to inform you all of some changes and ideas that we’ve been cranking out for Yow Yow! Can you believe that I have a day job with all of the work I put into this blog? I can’t. With that said here’s what you can expect:

  • An interview series featuring amazing women  that I respect and look up to in the digital world
  • Video blogging (just something that Veronica and I have been tossing around!)
  • Catching up with all of my previous guest post contributors starting with Veronica!
  • More topics from Conversations From A 20-Something
  • Yow Yow! branding from a talented designer that I am so excited to be working with!

Thanks everyone for your support!

Conversations From 20-Somethings

layout

For the past couple of months, I have had several ideas for Yow Yow that I haven’t been able to put into effect immediately. While there are just a couple that are in the queue right now, there is one that I can introduce to you tonight! As a newly 23-year old, I’ve heard for months from countless people that my 20s are going to be absolutely life changing. After all, Thought Catalog tells me that every week that my 20s will be full of career changes, relationship changes, life changes, etc. And the more I read about it, the more I see it to be true. Yes, I entered my 20s just three years ago, but I don’t believe that adult life really begins until you are out of college ie) now!

For the past several months, I have been catching up with friends and having meaningful conversations that have stuck and that is what I want to begin sharing with all of you. If you’re in your 20s, do you have these conversations too? If you’re not, can you relate? Let’s have a conversation about it!

Thank You!

ben5

Good morning!

Yesterday evening, Yow Yow! reached 700 subscribers and while I never openly get excited about these things, I actually am inside! Whether it is reaching 1,000,000 views or working with a new company or brand, or even gaining one more subscriber – these milestones mean so much to me. I’ll be honest with all of you – this year has not been a very good start for Yow Yow! for reasons that I don’t even understand, but that’s the norm with blogging. One day you’ll get a ton of views for a post that you didn’t put much time into and it will just be something that can’t be explained. Regardless, I’d like you all to know that Yow Yow is not going anywhere. Having a relationship with this blog for four years is something I can’t fathom, but what  a ride it has been. I still have so many ideas up my sleeve and while timing isn’t always right for them or the feelings might not be in the right place, I am still passionate about these ideas and hope to share them all with you someday.

Thank you so much to all of the people that I have worked within the last year. You’ve only helped me to become a better blogger. Thank you so much to my dear friends and family who read this blog – whether you tell me that you do or not, it means the world to me! And thank you readers for continuing to like my posts, return to this blog, etc. I’ve finally gotten into a groove with posting and can get through my 20 blogs on a daily basis (that used to be impossible while in school!) allowing me to go to sleep at a reasonable time.

It means a lot to me that I have this space to share with all of you the things that I love and the things and people that simply inspire me.

7 Reasons To Love Spring

IMG_9368

Readers, no one is more excited than I am to see winter GONE. I have loved spring since the day that I was born, but there are 7 reasons that I am going to share with you today on why I am swooning over this season. Even though it’s all that I’ve ever known, spring in Seattle is gorgeous. I don’t know how I am ever going to part with it, but we don’t have to talk about that now – so let’s just get into the good stuff, shall we?

1. I (personally) get to dress better. While I love my layers, the worst part about winter is having to hide every outfit with a coat. Another reason? I’m too lazy to go to coat check. During spring, that just isn’t a problem. Bring a cover up, fold up a cardigan, and you are good to go. This season, I am thrilled to be bringing out my favorite dresses for the weekend and even in the office paired with a blazer. Some of my favorite dresses will be featured in just a couple of days for The Closet: March 2013 post.

photo cred | Refinery 29

2. The men are dressing better. Pastels, crisp shirts, lighter fabric – we like it all. Guys, need to know what to purchase for the spring? Check out Refinery 29′s guide here.

3. It’s the start of the wedding season y’all! Unfortunately, I have not been invited to any weddings yet this season, but I am assisting my co-worker in her side project of being a freelance wedding planner and I am ecstatic to be jumping into any sort of event planning once again.

4. The gorgeous views of the sun setting in Seattle from my home and Mt. Rainier! I can’t get enough of it.

5. My Mariners even though they’re not doing so hot right now, that’s okay.

6. Blogging on the go. What I loved about living in Seattle for the past 4 years is that I could take my computer with me everywhere and I have found that blogging in different settings whether it’s on campus, in a coffee shop, at a cafe, outside, etc completely gave me a new perspective. It affected the content that I was writing or the mood that I was in and naturally, I just loved moving out and about. You can do that in the spring, but in the winter, you won’t see me leaving the house to just blog.

7. Brunch – better yet, any meal outdoors. Enough said.

2 Chainz – Birthday Song

Hello readers! I’m taking just a mini hiatus for most of the today because… it’s my birthday! Actually this entire weekend, I’ve been on sort of a break and I think I kind of deserve it. I am so grateful for my dear family and friends that have been celebrating with me this weekend, but also in previous years and birthdays. These are all special memories for me and reminds me of how many incredible people I have in my life.

Thank you all for continuing on with Yow Yow! on this journey!

It’s hard enough as it is to get through my blogs every day, but your girl is up for the challenge.

Pinterest Analytics

When it comes to numbers and data, I am such a geek. I guess that kind of goes hand-in-hand with blogging though right? Readers on Pinterest, have you checked out your analytics yet and if so what do you think? I’m obsessed with my WordPress stats and check everyday mostly because I’m so curious where all of y’all are coming from!

Also, if you’re not following me on Pinterest yet, please feel free to do so :)

Happy Saturday!

photo cred | The Cobrasnake

And so begins the first day of Birthday Week! Every year, my birthday to me has always been a celebration of life and joy with the people I love spending it with. But I’ve never celebrated my birthday just for me. I know it sounds a little bit selfish, but I believe that there comes a point in time in someone’s life where you need to be selfish – not entirely, but to an extent. I love looking back on my birthdays because it reminds me that I am surrounded by some truly astounding people. When I was a senior in high school, my best friend threw me a Hello Kitty themed birthday with all of my friends.  As the years went on, I turned one birthday into a blog project that is still one of my favorite memories of all time. I’ve done the huge house party. I’ve had my 21 run x3 and last year I took a road trip to San Francisco with my best friends and opened a new chapter. But chapters close and perspectives change and life throws you for a loop. I have no idea what this birthday week celebration will bring, but I hope always to be in good company no matter what situation I am in.

Happy Saturday everyone!

Harlem Shake For Website

I just tried this for Yow Yow! and it made my day.

I’m so glad that the Harlem Shake is really only 30 seconds though because that ish would be annoying.

Harlem Shake your website here or mine!

Question:

Readers,

I need some help from y’all today! Are any of you reading any San Francisco/Bay Area – based blogs? If so, share them with me!

I’m interested in seeing blogs that revolve around fashion/lifestyle/culture/music/food/home/mens/etc.

We’ll start by doing a trade off. My favorite  newly San Francisco based blog originally came from Seattle – Social Potato Chips!

Happy Friday!

Food Nomz:

salmon

It’s been awhile since Yow Yow’s had a “Food Nomz” post. It’s not because we’re not eating – it’s mostly because I haven’t had the motivation to try any new recipes. I’m learning everyday that buying all the ingredients you need for one meal is time consuming and cooking it after work is even more trying. Luckily for us, Kevin bought the groceries today and with me finding the easiest recipe for salmon, I thought we were solid.

For the longest time, I’ve been cooking salmon one way. I’ve pretty much perfected that, but I’ve been itching to try a new one so when I saw that the only ingredients required were lemon slices and butter and tin foil to hold it all in was all that was required, I was sold. Hi, no messy dish? We followed the recipe exactly, BUT I think we were a little bit off on the timing. After the first 25 minutes, we noticed that it wasn’t all cooked in the middle (scary!) so we put it in for another 15?

It’s a great recipe because it’s so simple and refreshing – more fitting for spring or summer, but I’d love it if one of my own readers could test it out and let me know what they thought. Maybe next time we’ll just ditch the foil and put it in a baking dish as usual.

PS: Forgot to say that we added both pepper and chili powder to the mix on top to give it an extra kick.
