The Break Down of A Mash Up

Mash Up

v. To take elements of two or more pre-existing pieces of music and combine them to make a new song.

Single songs are out! Bring on the mash up created by djs and artists such as Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk, Dick Fink and Nicolas Fenmore of Super Mash Brothers and Aaron Brink and Steve Reidell of The Hood Internet.

Why listen to one good song, when you can listen to a compilation of some of your favorite songs mixed into one often time containing today’s mainstream with previous hits.

What makes mash up so hot right now? I’d say, convenience. It’s hot in the clubs, I wouldn’t know personally but my source says yes, you can dance to it and you probably know most of the lyrics to many of the songs featured. They just sound good…when done right of course.

Wired Magazine recently dissected Girl Talk song, “What’s It All About,” to show their readers just how precise and complicated composing a mash up really is.
