Don’t call them Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head

As of today, they are now called

Brite Futures

It doesn’t have the same ring to it, wouldn’t you agree? While Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head is a much longer name title, it is a better fitting for the electronic indie Seattle band. That’s the thing though, I’ve never really understood name changes. It’s not the same way as changing your phone number. You’re changing the way you are being addressed. It takes some getting used to.

I was never able to catch one of their shows in the five years that they were called Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, but I’ve heard enough about them to know that they were a hit in this area. Like many bands from here, they had their start at the local teen centers before playing Seattle venues. Then they competed in EMP’s Sound Off! Competition, which ultimately lead them to take the stage at Bumbershoot. These guys and girl have come a long way.

Last year they went on tour with Miss Lily Allen, and have recently signed with Warner Brothers.

The band released a statement this morning addressing this new name change:

“We chose our band name on a whim when we were still in high school, and “Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head” has seen us through an unexpectedly amazing four years. Our love affair with Natalie’s name was like a summer fling that lasted… and lasted… and lasted. But now it is summer once again, and time for a change. Also it has recently come to our attention that our muse Ms. Portman is not so keen on us using her name in ours. Ultimately we are lovers, not fighters, and our mamas didn’t raise no fools, so we feel it is time to move forward with a new name. We are BRITE FUTURES. No hard feelings Natalie. You remain +1 on every guest list.”

Brite Futures will be playing an All-ages show at Neumos on Saturday, July 17th benefiting The Vera Project. They also released a new song today called “Dog-Eared Summer”, which is actually quite catchy. Listen to it here
