Dongguri

Growing up, I have always had a simple fascination with cartoon characters. I suppose it’s the child-like tendency that still lives within me, but I grew up loving characters such as Hello Kitty and Suzy Zoo because they were simple characters with a whole lot of personality. I recently discovered a new Korean-based character that goes by the name Dongguri a smiling, genderless alter-ego that romps around candy-colored landscapes. The happy-go-lucky personality was designed by Korean artist Kwon Kisoo who prefers to place Dongguri in colorful Asian-inspired settings that include bamboo, rivers, plum blossoms, and rainbows. Supposedly, these paintings were designed to subtly hint at the globalism and consumer culture within Korea. Can’t snag a painting? That’s okay, you can set Dongguri as your iGoogle theme and view him every day! Just click here to activate.

Kwon Kisoo is also hosting his first solo show in America in New York City at Flowers Gallery until October 2nd. He has been displaying his work at Asian art museums in Korea for the past ten years.

Family Dinners steer kids away from drinking and drug use

Yesterday, Time Magazine published a new study showing that family dinners lessen the risk of children getting involved with drinking and drugs.

By having family dinners, parents are able to actively listen to their children. In general, it’s not about where you are, but rather, who you are with.

In a way, it makes clear sense. I’m sure it is something that we have always kind of known, but now a study just reaffirms this assumption.

I know these statistics reflect data collected about children, but this is definitely something I still do today with my own parents. Old habits never die.

Vampire Hunt

Spotted: Edward Cullen on the lower mall of Seattle University. Destination unknown. Is he a vampire or just your every day average student?

Veronica and I would like to know who he is so if any of you have information – please let us know.

Thank you.

Shoe Treats to sweet to Eat

See what I did there? So clever at 1:16 AM

Frances Cooley is a boutique cake maker and trained chocolatier. Her love affair with chocolate began at the age of five, when her mom bought a block of chocolate back from Mexico. Frances found the original shoe mould on a trip to Antwerp and was inspired to make some chocolate zebra print shoes because she’d always loved zebra print shoes. And chocolate. Gorgeous handbags are the perfect partners for sexy stiletto shoes, so Frances designed and patented her own handbag design, tracking down a local manufacturer to create a set of moulds. Polka dots and leopard print joined the zebra print, and Choc Chic was born.

These are the cutest things in the world, but I could never eat them. I can’t eat anything that is too pretty to eat. Ginger bread houses – no way. Don’t even think about sending me an Edible Arrangements piece. It will stay with me forever until it rots having never been touched!

I like these though. Can they just not be made out of chocolate please so I can keep them forever?

Teenage Paparazzo

Awhile back, I wrote a post about how Adrian Grenier would be filming a documentary called Teenage Paparazzo. The documentary follows 14-year old Austin Visschedyk as he lives his life photographing celebrities for a living often earning anywhere from $500 to $1000 for a single photo.

In case anyone is wondering, like myself, the kid is home schooled.

Here’s the trailer for the documentary that will be airing on HBO. It was also selected for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

MGMT Urged To Change Music Style

If you have taken the time to listen to MGMT’s first and second album Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, respectively, you will have noticed how different they sound from each other. I remember doing a double take on my iTunes when I previewed Congratulations. All of my expectations or rather predictions had gone out the window. Where were the poppy electronic beatz?!

Even though it wasn’t what I expected, I couldn’t help but think that Andrew and Ben were “stickin’ it to the man!” The man in this case would be their record label. I assumed that what I was hearing on their second album was what they wanted to sound like whereas their first album was made to merely gain a fan base. On numerous occasions, I have expressed my disappointment in new bands changing their music for their sophomore album ie) Paramore. I realize that sometimes it can’t be helped! After all, this is a business. This is what they are doing for a living.

Fans weren’t the only ones who were turned off by Congratulations. The head honchos at their Columbia label have also expressed their opinions about it and have decided to have more control on their next album release. Andrew Van-Wyngarden appears to be taking it well from this statement: “I definitely think our music will change in the future because Congratulations is almost two years old now. We have some ideas and have been talking about possible directions of where to go next.”

I bet they paid him to say that.
