Song of the Day

Lucy Schwartz – Graveyard

A friend of mine posted this video saying that this was her roommate from freshman year. I thought I would check it out and found myself completely hooked. Not only is her voice incredible, but the video is some piece of work. I’m diggin’ on the theatrics in the movement, but am surprised by how the song can be both haunting and upbeat.

Oh yeah, did I mention she’s 20?

Thanks Amy!

Life Turned Upside Down

Why stand upright for pictures when you can be upside down? Photographer Stephen Morris decided to make things a little bit more interesting by positioning himself in headstands for series “Life Turned Upside Down.”

“As he says, “Grass is soft so falling over doesn’t hurt. I used my socks as a focal point as to where my head was to go so I could manual focus on that point and then put my head there when the self timer was going. It took quite a few attempts to get it looking right and i nearly killed Button by falling on her but she’s a fighter and loved messing about! ‘The Master and Her Dog’ was the first shot and from it came a whole series.”

Song of the Day

Andy Grammer – Keep Your Head Up

Today’s Song of the Day is also a music spotlight! During my trip to California last summer, I finally had the chance to go to Santa Monica for the first time – a place that I have been dying to see! The downtown shopping area of Santa Monica has a little thing called the “promenade” where local performers play mini sets during the day for tourists and locals. On the day that I went, I had the privilege of meeting Andy Grammer.

I never got a chance to follow up with him after that day and somehow misplaced his contact information, but it looks like he is doing well for himself! His music video for “Keep Your Head Up” is spectacular! It’s an interactive video meaning you have the power to choose what happens within the music video. Watching a music video just got a little more fun, not to mention, you get to listen to a great song at the same time.

There’s also a cameo from a pretty well known television star in the video as well, but I’ll just let you watch to find out who it is.

It is incredible to see an artist grow over time and receive the recognition that they deserve. Having worked with local artists and developing friendships with them over the years, I think that the most satisfying aspect is not knowing someone before they’re famous, but being able to witness them succeed.

Congrats Andy!

Four Loko: You In Danger Girl!

A few weeks ago, Central Washington University made headlines after nine students reportedly got sick after attending a party. According to King 5 News, one girl almost died. Before the results of the test came back, many people believed that the incident was caused by a potential date rape drug put into the drinks.

Oh how wrong they were…

The sickness was actually brought on by the Four Loko. Four Loko is an alcoholic energy drink that contains 12% alcohol and comes in a variety of flavors. Drinking just one equals about four to five beers. Basically, it’s a binge drinker’s dream.

Apparently, lawmakers everywhere are trying to get the drink banned. But wait, I know what you’re thinking… won’t this make the underage even more determined to get their hands on the drink? Most likely.

C’mon get it together. Can the underage at least learn how to drink responsibly so the rest of us don’t look like fools?

Where Children Sleep Around the World

It wasn’t until after high school that I started appreciating my room. I always thought decorating took too much work and time so in the end I decided to settle with my plain white walls. Honestly, the room never had any personality and looking back on my childhood, I almost wished I would have done something to spruce it up. I’ve never even painted a room! Isn’t that a milestone for every child?

Today, I think I’ll choose to live vicariously through James Mollison’s new book “Where Children Sleep.” The book feature photographs of young children from all over the world in the home that they have made their own.

“The above photo documents the bedroom of 4-year-old Kaya of Tokyo, Japan. Kaya owns more than 30 pairs of shoes and several dozen dresses, and lives in extreme contrast to several other children profiled in the book.”

Four Day Weekend

In Spring 2009, Sezio hosted Live @ Luce Loft in East Village, San Diego showcasing ten local up-and-coming bands and musicians. This year, they are raising the bar with Four Day Weekend by bringing back the California-based bands and a larger space. All shows take place in a “living room setting” in order to create a more personal and intimate atmosphere for both the performers and guests.

The four nights of music will run from Thursday, Nov 4th through Sunday, Nov 8th at Sushi Art located in San Diego’s East Village. A VIP ticket gives you access to all four shows and is going for $50. That is quite the deal! If you can only make it to one day, the individual tickets are $10 except for The Dodo’s set which is $15. Still not bad though.

Watertown Closing Explained

Last week I wrote a post about how Watertown had suddenly closed – as reported by blog Capitol Hill Seattle. At the time there was no explanation as to why they actually closed, but now there is. Owner Amy Vanderbeck explained that medical reasons were what stood in her way of being able to run the shop properly.
