Relationship Resolutions

With 2011 right around the corner, people are pondering what their New Year’s resolution will be. Will they be able to keep it for the whole year? Will they even remember what resolution they made by June? This year, I have officially given up on resolutions because I simply forget about it. I am someone that makes goals along the way and since that has always worked for me, I’m going to stick with it.

The three most frequent resolutions that I hear from my friends are always

a) Health/Eating well/Working out

b) Ambition/ Doing well in school / Career-oriented

c) Relationships

Relationship resolutions involve swearing off hookups, dating more, putting themselves “out there” – whatever that means, or just having fun. This morning, I found several articles revolving around relationships in the new year so I thought that it would be a great idea to make a roundup of them instead of making separate posts. Don’t worry, these posts are for both  genders!

The Other Woman

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgGkeeViK_A]

Natalie Portman is the actress that everyone is talking about at the end of 2010 for her performance in Black Swan. Next year, she brings us No Strings Attached and The Other Woman – a film reminiscent to Stepmom. Is this the beginning of her downfall? She may be adding more films to her resume in a short period of time, but a rom-com and a film without an original plot line won’t be able to compare to Black Swan. Regardless, I kind of liked watching the trailer above, but for some reason, I have a hard time picturing Natalie as a mom like my reaction to her in Brothers last year.

Out on the Town: 12/30

If your New Year’s resolution is to diet better, eat healthy, avoid sweets, or all of the above, make you sure to stop by the grand opening of High 5 Pie this Thursday for your last dosage of treats! What a way to go out right? I am so excited for this pie shop to open! Capitol Hill is dominating in the dessert area and will continue to do so when Yogurtland opens.

Movie Review: Somewhere

If I had to pick the shining star in this film it would be Elle Fanning hands down. The girl is a charmer and gives an effortless performance. She embodies both elegance and grace and brings life to her character. It is this liveliness and spark within her that causes a constantly brooding Stephen Dorff to wake up! Dorff plays Johnny Marco, an actor and playboy struggling to understand the purpose of his life. Yes, we’ve seen this plot played out many times before, but I assure you, it is not a quick transformation at all.  Sofia Coppola has a unique style of direction that seduces the audience into a slow and quiet trance. This is an acquired taste, however, for it does not always sit well with some audiences. Her scenes are longer than usual with minimal dialog. The scene pans out giving us time to interpret what this actually means. There are even lengthy scenes of pure silence.

I can’t knock Coppola’s directing style because I think the film is brilliant. It is beautifully done, but it does lack substance at times. A bit of an explanation in some parts would have been helpful. Although I sometimes felt lost throughout the film due to the sporadic moments in Johnny Marco’s life , in the end, I believe I was lead to the right place.

It is a film worth watching, but it is entirely up for interpretation. It is not a film like Black Swan, in which you instantly know that it is a fantastic film.

Natalie Portman: Engaged and Preggers

Natalie Portman has been amidst all sorts of buzz lately after her performance in the Oscar-nominated film Black Swan. Now, People Magazine has reported that the actress is engaged to her boyfriend of one year, Benjamin Millepied and that the couple are expecting. Millepied was the choreographer for Black Swan – pictured above far left. These two are going to have one beautiful child.

Katie’s Favorites of 2010

Favorite Style Icon: Alexa Chung

Earlier this year, my friend Veronica asked me if I would be compiling 20 of my favorite posts to feature like I had done last year. At the end of 2009, I had 1,423 posts. Today, I have 3502 posts. Going through that many from this year alone does not sound fun to me. 2010 was a great year and there are many special posts that mean something to me, but the task is exhausting. After starting the process, I decided to opt out of it and bring you my favorites in other things instead as a way to look back on this year. Enjoy!
