Follow-Up With Alex Day

For some reason, it had never occurred to me that some YouTube channels existed. In fact, the idea that people could become YouTube celebrities was unheard of to me! I never watched any other channel until I stumbled upon Alex Day’s and to this day he is pretty much the only channel that I watch. His channel caught my attention back in 2009 when I watched a video of him reading through chapters of Twilight. Maybe it was his boyishly handsome looks or his witty charm. It might actually be because we both cannot stand reading the Twilight books.

Regardless, I was smitten. I’ve managed to stay up-to-date with Alex’s channel ever since and every now and then I’ll catch the interview I did with him one year ago under the Top Posts category. Since a lot can change in a year, I decided to write to the v-logger again to see just what he was up to!

Q: You officially finished the first Twilight book. Congratulations! Now what? The second book maybe?

Alex: Haha, thank you for your congratulations – if you’ve read the book you’ll know I deserve them for making it through the whole book – but no, I’ve had enough of Stephanie’s novels for one lifetime. I did put a little teaser for New Moon at the end of my Twilight readings, but it was just a fun thing to keep people excited.

Q: How is everything going with your music? Any updates for us?

A: I’m currently recording a new album with my band, Chameleon Circuit (we record songs about Doctor Who) so I’m really excited to get that done. We’ll be recording all through January, mixing in February and making final tweaks in March.

Q: Since I last interviewed you almost a year ago, you had about 86,000 subscribers. Today, you are pushing almost 285,000. You’ve gained 200,000. Does that even make sense to you? How do you grasp something like that?

A: I know! It’s mental, I can’t picture that really. But also, a lot of those people come and go because they got bored of YouTube or because I try to keep changing what I do, so I don’t want to assume all those people, or even half of them, actually watch me.

Q: You recently visited Chicago and New York, what were you out here for?

A: I visited New York because I wanted to see a musical, and Chicago because that’s where my CDs get sent out.

Q: So what are your top 5 albums of 2010?

A: This is tricky because I mainly listen to my friend’s music. Okay, in no particular order:

-Confidence Tricks by Eddplant
-Danger Days by My Chemical Romance
-Greatest Hits: Volume One by The Oceanic Six
-Tim Minchin Live At The O2
-Speak Now by Taylor Swift

Q: Last year, you told me your resolution was to make YouTube’s subscribed list by the end of the year. It looks like you made it! Any New Years resolutions for 2011?

A: I actually didn’t make it – I’m in the top 150, but not quite at 100 in the worldwide lists yet. This year I haven’t made any resolutions, does that make be boring? I don’t know, but I should be honest I guess.

Congratulations on all of your success Alex! We can’t wait to hear about all of the wonderful things you will do next.
