CityArts’ Best New Bands From 2010

Almost a year ago, my dear friend Jack connected me to this guy named Jordan. A student at UW, Jordan, like me was also interested in Seattle’s music scene. At the end of one our last messages, he let slip that he was part of a dj duo and was down to play some shows, but back then I didn’t have any idea of what would become of Beat Connection.

Today, Beat Connection is blowing up! They’re headed to the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas next month and will be making a few trips to Europe where their music has been spinning regularly. So it’s no surprise that they have made it on the list of CityArt Magazine’s Best New Bands From 2010 and bands to look forward to in 2011.

I’m so excited for this group because for the longest time I was listening to them without knowing that it was actually the group that Jordan was a part of. They’ve got a fantastic sound that I know has potential. It’s also a sound that differs from every other band on the scene right now in the Pacific Northwest. To be traveling this much and gaining this much exposure as students is quite impressive.

CityArts has put together a list that is stacked with bands that are just about to take off so if you’re looking for new music at all, this is the place to find it. My other favorites on the list include Shabazz Palaces, Fences, Ravenna Woods, and Campfire OK.

Check out the list here.

Dance Marathon

This past Saturday, I participated in Dance Marathon at Seattle University to raise money for the Seattle Children’s Hospital. We ended up surpassing our goal and raising over $26,000+ The marathon was held from 10AM Saturday to 2AM Sunday and during that time we were on our feet at all times. We didn’t have to necessarily be dancing the whole time, but we definitely weren’t allowed to sit down.

Those closest to me know that seeing me partake in any kind of strenuous activity at all is a rare sight. Even though I’m about to lose a toe nail on both of my bruised feet, I don’t think I would take back the 16 hrs of dancing, dance circles, dance battles, laughter, pictures, and the many inside jokes.

I feel incredibly lucky to have had this opportunity and this experience in my college career, but I honestly believe that now is the best time for me to be able to give back. Even though I would like to continue to give back throughout my life and in my future, who’s to say that that can actually happen. Right now, I have the time, the opportunities, and apparently the feet for it (or not.)

Anyways, I’ll be wearing my Uggs for the rest of the week since I’m supposed to avoid tight fitting shoes, but I thought that all of you should know…

Owen and Ford

“It does occur to me at some point…when he’s a little boy and he’ll be kind of fidgeting and I’ll have to get him to do his homework and I’ll have to be like, ‘Ford, focus.'”

– Owen Wilson, on how his new son Robert Ford’s name is a play off the Ford sedan, on The Tonight Show

Thanks Teen Vogue!

This morning, I received a lovely little package from Teen Vogue including the latest products from Clean & Clear’s new line and an 8GB Ultra HD Flip video camera! Apparently, they’ve made me a brand ambassador for Clean & Clear and have asked me to enter their new promotional contest beginning February 28th. While I’m not exactly sure if I can commit to it just yet, I’d like to pass it on to all of you because the prize is a trip to NYC to perform at a huge Teen Vogue event. All you have to do is learn a cool dance and submit your performance.

To learn more, like them on Facebook here.

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS FLIP CAM!

I have been wanting one forever and I’m so glad I don’t have to ask for one for my birthday now! Hopefully this means…some videos for Yow Yow?! Oh Teen Vogue…first a pair of Sanuk shoes, now a Flip cam, what next?

Song of the Day

Cults – Go Outside

Today’s Song of the Day has a French-themed music video that stars Dave Franco (younger brother of James Franco) and Emma Roberts (niece of Julia Roberts.) I haven’t decided what my favorite part of the video is just yet – maybe it’s the theme of romanticism, the alluring song, or the fact that two stars on the rise are in it! Maybe it is just all of it.

Daft Cola

Um…what?

The carbonated beverage and electronic music duo have joined forces to bring you shiny Daft Cola bottles. Beginning March, you will be able to order yourself one of these exclusive bottles at the most exclusive clubs that you may or may never be admitted in to.

So maybe the bottles are limited edition, but I wonder how much one costs.
