MTV pilots new show about 20 year olds

It’s not Real World. It’s not another Teen Mom. In the new scripted pilot, MTV hopes to capture the lives of a group of friends in their early 20’s living in Chicago. The five of them had big dreams after college, but never went on to achieve any of them. Instead of fulfilling the lives that they had hoped for, they are struggling to make ends meet with odd jobs and gigs around town. The scripted series is set to resemble today’s modern era of the economic climate.

It actually sounds like an interesting series. I’m sure it has been done before – actually – I’m almost positive that ABC tried to pull a stunt like this with a series this past year. Obviously that failed because it was canceled after one or two episodes, but I think the idea of it is interesting. I know that just within my group of friends, we have, for the most part, ended up in completely different places since we left high school and a part of me will always remain curious about the “glory days.”

I don’t recognize any one in the cast except for “Alex” from Pretty Little Liars. I really wish he would return as Spencer’s boyfriend – the way that relationship ended was very awkward.

Alex Ebert to Release Solo Album

For those of you who do not know his name right off the bat, Alex Ebert is the front man of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Oh “Home,” how you were the song of my spring quarter last year…

Ebert will release his first solo album on March 1, 2011 titled “Alexander.” The Edward Sharpe album is one of my favorites so I don’t believe that his new album will be anything short of amazing. Let’s hope he can juggle both projects!

Listen to a sneak peak at the source.

Target Re-Releases 34 GO International Looks from the Past

[Tucker]

Every time Target debuts a new collaboration with a designer, I find myself getting so excited over it. The release date goes up on the calendar. The date to hit up Target is set. I think I am ready and then I find myself completely missing it altogether. This time, I am refusing to let this happen especially since Target is re-releasing looks from their previous collaborations for this one time period only before they are gone forever!

Here are just a few of my favorite picks:

How to run a successful house show venue

I suppose it’s not all that surprising that Seattle is not only home to a wonderful music scene, but also to plenty of house shows. I’ve been to my fair share of them for local student bands from Seattle U, and I understand the appeal to them because they are intimate and you are surrounded by your peers and what not. However, they just don’t compare to a regular show at a venue. Granted, I’ve never been to a house show that wasn’t being hosted by a well known band.  The reason why I haven’t enjoyed the house shows here very much is because they are nuts. Everyone is intoxicated and there is no structure. The bands don’t care about the show very much, but care more more about the party that they are at. It’s a lose-lose for everyone.

I’ll never forget the first house show I went to my freshman year which doubled as a birthday party for a hipster one year above me. The band’s set ended and he wanted everyone out so he got up on the kitchen counter, picked up a watermelon, and threw it to the floor with all of his might. If you’re envisioning a tantrum from some 5-year old, you’ve pretty much nailed it. He then picked up the pieces and remains and threw them at the attendees in order to shoo them out. Watermelon all up in my hair. Naturally, this progressed into a fight. A hipster fight! It was all sorts of hilarity really, but one that I will never forget.

Anyways, what I’m trying to get to is that house shows in Seattle kind of suck. I recommend that students in the area that are considering throwing one get this book by Roy Silverstein. If you’re going to host one, do it right. House shows are parties, but that’s not what they have to be about entirely. If you’re going to throw a party, just throw a party sans band. If you want a house show, have one for the right reasons and that is for the love of music, art, and community.
