JCPenny pulls controversial sexist shirt for little girls

First off:

I learned yesterday that JCPenny will be opening up a location in downtown Seattle and the only thing I could think of was “WHY?”  I can think of three other retailers that would be better suited for that spot.

  • Zara
  • Aritzia
  • Bloomingdales

BOOM.

Secondly, people went nutz via Twitter over a shirt that JCPenny had put out online because it was both sexist and insulting to younger girls. The shirts in question had the phrases “I’m too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me”  and “Who has time to do homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out?”

“Kate Coultas of JCPenney corporate communications told the Village Voice, “We are not happy about the shirt! We’re looking into it right now, to find out how it happened. It was only online, not available in stores, and we have removed it from the site.”

Well, how did it happen then? Clearly, someone had to give the “OK” to produce this shirt in the first place. I’m glad that the retailer has released an apology and taken down the shirt, but something seems a little sketchy to me.
