A Lesson in Introductions

I can’t tell you how many little (but important) things I have learned from reading other people’s blogs. Joanna Goddard’sA Cup of Jo” is one of my favorites and since I was almost two months behind on her posts, I decided to play catch up today. I came across a short, but sweet post about the correct way to introduce people and now I’m pretty sure I’ll stick to this method every time now since I”m now aware of it.

“When you’re introducing someone, you should always say their name first and their relationship to you second.

Wrong: “This is my sister, Lucy.”
Right: “This is Lucy, my sister.”

That way, you spotlight the person–not their connection to you.

You might think that this is so small of a detail that it doesn’t even matter, but it’s because of the detail that it DOES matter.

Breakfast Banana Split

Dessert for breakfast? Why not! Bumbershoot weekend is just around the corner and if I’m going to start my marathon of concert watching all three days, then I’m going to need a hearty breakfast of some sort. I was browsing some blogs today when I came across this mouthwatering breakfast banana split. While it may look like an actual banana split, you’ll notice that some ingredients have been substituted to be more suitable for a breakfast meal. Topping off those bananas are scoops of Greek yogurt, jam (chocolate sauce substitute) and almonds and fresh berries.

Wait – can I have this for dessert too?

Photo Essay: The Third Wheel

[Jackson Eaton]

At some point in our lives, we all experience third wheel syndrome. You may be dating someone that constantly has their needy best friend or roommate around them at all times or you may actually be the third wheel who hasn’t understood when to take a hike. Whether you’ve experienced one or the other or neither, you should know that this is normal. Australian photographer Jackson Eaton found these third wheel scenarios to be so comical that he decided to document these awkward relationship moments for a series conveniently titled “The Third Wheel.”

Back to School Series Pt. 5

What would I do without The Frisky? Like Yow Yow! many blogs right now are currently writing back-to-school themed posts and while I’ve seen quite a few great posts from the blogs I read daily, The Frisky is my absolute favorite. Last year, they wrote an incredible piece called “30 Things Every College Student Should Have,” so I thought I would use some of their tips and refine it with some of my own.

  1. A good study buddy.
  2. A favorite quiet spot to study.
  3. Extra change for bus fare or laundry.
  4. One treat from the dining hall once a week whether it is a cookie (or two) or three pumpkin tartlets in one day (like I do.)
  5. A retreat home during those long holiday weekends.
  6. A four-year plan.
  7. Someone to talk to when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed.
  8. Condoms, if you’re sexually active.
  9. Open communication with your roommate(s.)
  10. A wardrobe that includes clothes for the day, comfy clothes, going-out clothes, and the outfits for your presentations and job interviews.
  11. Shower shoes for communal bathrooms.
  12. A spot that will always hold the key to your room so you never forget it.
  13. Snacks for your dorm room, but with some willpower of your own.
  14. New friends at school.
  15. A designated driver (or walker.)
  16. A best friend from home you can always call and vent to.
  17. A vacuum cleaner.
  18. Good judgement.
  19. A decent professor plea email for when you fail a test…or two.
  20. Your own checking account.
  21. A bathrobe.
  22. An organization or club to belong to.
  23. At least one friend who will tell you when your outfit or behavior is inappropriate.
  24. A part time or work study job.
  25. At least a few experiences you wouldn’t want your parents to know about.
  26. A friend who will push you to try new experiences that won’t get you in trouble with the law.
  27. Friends that will have womp-womp breakfasts with you the morning after an outrageous night.
  28. A late night restaurant for all of your drunchie needs.
  29. A major that you actually care about.
  30. A camera for EVERYTHING.

The Importance of Saying No

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IXCK1EyP4s&feature=player_embedded]

There comes a time in your life when you must learn how to say “No.” It may sound simple at first, but you won’t believe how many people have trouble saying the word. Don’t worry, Shia Labeouf will teach you how in this compelling compilation.

Frandy Bar Food Truck

I was convinced that Bumbershoot was going for a health kick this year after learning about the  hamster wheel installation that lets attendees generate electricity on their own before earning themselves a free snow cone, but I was so very wrong. The hamster wheel is still happening, but Bumbershoot will also be having the Frandy Bar Food Truck on site at the event as well. Known for their deep fried PB&J’s, Snickers, pickles and Oreos, Frandy Bar will have you headed straight towards a food coma or a massive sugar rush. Parents, I’d advise your kids to stay away from this vendor. A part of me thinks that it would a poor life decision for me to even think about giving this truck a try, but I can’t help but be slightly curious about the fried pickle – which Snooki has called a “life-changing experience.”

Mmm obesity.

Lady Godga gets a reaction

One of the best moments of the VMA’s last night was seeing all of the celebrities react to Lady Gaga’s performance of “You and I.” This is the last VMA post, I swear. I’m already even over it myself, but Flavorwire compiled these reactions together and I thought it was pretty convenient. In the middle of our live text commentaries last night during the show, Ashley told me that she actually liked Gaga last night while I just could not agree with that at all.  I can typically enjoy her in small doses, but the theatrics of last night were just too much for me. Her persona was kind of obnoxious. And it was a little bit ironic of her “character” to talk about how Lady Gaga was so into herself when it seemed like the entire show was all about Jo Calderone. Do. Not. Care.

I just wanted to point out that Dave Grohl was not cheering for Jo Calderone, but for Queen’s Brian May.
