Reflecting on “Turning 20”

For a couple of weeks now, I’ve noticed an older post of mine from back in the day rising to the top again. I’m not exactly sure how people are rediscovering “Turning 20 Is Like A Quarter Of Your Life,” but it is extremely cool to see it amongst the other top posts. This post is very special to me, but not because I am conceited about my birthday. I love my birthday – don’t get me wrong, but I spent my 20th birthday having a REAL adventure. Many of my close friends will tell you that I am a HUGE fan of projects. In my senior year of high school and freshman year of college, I participated in Project 366 (don’t know what it is? Google Project 365.) Instead of writing in my friend’s yearbooks, I gave them personalized letters some up to seven pages long! I asked my friends to be my models in photography shoots when I thought I wanted to be a photographer and then I became a blogger. I was supposed to be a blogger for one year, but look how that turned out. There’s been a handful of project ideas that I’ve had since I’ve been in school, but unfortunately didn’t always have the means to execute them properly. I love projects because it provides me with a new way of doing things. It transforms something so easy into something so unique and special.

Up until my 20th birthday, I wasn’t sure how I would celebrate it, but that morning I woke up and instantly knew that that’s what I wanted to do. I was already going to spend it with two of my best friends, but why not meet some people along the way and let other people into my life while I learn a little bit about theirs? Gosh, this is seriously one of my favorite posts and when I see it under the top posts, it is just a reminder of what a wonderful day that was so thank you for keeping that memory alive for me. It’s tough to say whether or not I’ll be doing something like that again in the near future, but maybe someday.

It’s weird to think about this now, but that day was liberating for me. I took away some great pictures and great lessons and the best thing I learned was to just let yourself be open to new people and new experiences. Both will surprise you.
