Today’s Tragedy

I would like to extend my condolences to all those affected in the Aurora, CO shooting today. I am saddened that these acts of violence are continuing in our country and that my generation has had to grow up with these awful memories and recollections. Seeing a movie in a movie theater on the night of its premiere is an exciting moment especially for a movie that has been highly anticipated. It is the type of activity that enables all of us for maybe just two hours to leave our reality behind and enter someone else’s creation. It upsets me that today’s event has made those around us terrified of this – terrified of something that was made to be enjoyable.

My prayers are with all of the victims tonight.

Stanley

My experiences with Capitol Hill Block Party are never alike. Every year, there is some new addition that I fall in love with. My first year – it was the endless swag. Last year, it was the Vitamin Water Social Club. And this year, I think it might just be this hottie named Stanley.

Stanley will be perched up at this year’s music festival and will be triggered to play songs when you send in a tweet. Pretty cool, right?! Digital Kitchen did an amazing job with this installation and I am so excited to see it in action tomorrow.

The Great Caravan: Sasquatch! 2012

I once heard it described perfectly by a man dressed in neon swim trunks and a Native American headdress – “it’s the one weekend of the year where I just don’t care.” I couldn’t have said it better myself, shirtless man in feathers. He was talking about Sasquatch! Music Festival, the event which takes place every Memorial Day Weekend in what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the planet – the Gorge in George, Washington. People from all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond pack their Subaru Foresters with good friends and camping supplies. As 5-time festival-goer, it’s where I truly feel I can be myself – dance like no one’s watching (even though a lot are), belt out indie jams like I have the best voice in the world (even though I very much don’t), and make some lasting memories with people I love dearly.

The following is a play-by-play of Sasquatch 2012 from the eyes and ears of Lucas Ruiz. Here, ladies and gentlemen, are some moments I found particularly noteworthy:

Ben Gibbard To Release Solo Album

Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard will release his first solo album (under his actual name this time) on October 16, 2012. The album entitled “Former Lives” will be a full-length solo LP by Barsuk. Gibbard has previously released another album as well, however, under the moniker ¡All-TIme Quarterback!

I could not be more excited to hear this album. Death Cab for Cutie was practically the soundtrack to my teenage years and with each year, his work continues to amaze me. This, I’m sure, will be no exception.

After years of being a slop fest, Mischa “Marissa Cooper” Barton is making a comeback y’all!

If you don’t recognize the celebration in this then you are not a true Yow Yow! follower. Seriously though, this is a long time coming for this girl.
