Yow Yow’s Yearly Recap

4 years. Can you believe it? It’s surreal to me that I’ve kept Yow Yow! going for this long, but at the same time having Yow Yow! is also kind of like my very own personal diary. It’s kind of cool! I get to look back on some bad writing, some bad photos (or photos that are no longer photos) and some really embarrassing moments in history.

At the same time, I’ve also had the opportunity to witness AMAZING things in history. This year, Yow Yow! didn’t change much, but I did. I graduated from college y’all! As a small child, that day seems so far away – light years away! I’ve got my degree. I found myself a big girl job. I fled from Seattle – never thought that would happen either, but it had to someday. 2012 was good to me and 2013 (I hope) will be even better for us – me and Yow Yow!

So let’s get to the numbers, shall we?

Stats from 2011 will be on the right and italicized while stats from 2012 will be left and bold.

750,119 total visits to Yow Yow! – – – – – – – – – – –  1,128,873+ (since the day isn’t over yet and this does not include up until New Year’s Eve) total visits to Yow Yow!

*In just 2012, there were 377,996+ visits to Yow Yow!

DateMySchool

Over an accounting study sesh with my friend Alexis one night back in college, we came up with this idea to start a speed dating service for students at our university. HOBviously, this idea never took off, but it was interesting enough at the time for us to come up with a name for it. “More for the Win.” Other than that name, we basically had nothing other than a problem that we wanted to solve. Attending a small university can make it difficult to meet other people sometimes and when you start getting accepted into your respective schools, the only people you see are the ones in your classes. You have all of the same classes with the same people – also did I mention the disappointing gender ratio? 40% male to 60% female.

#roughlife

So when I stumbled across a post this morning called “Date My School” – deemed sort of like a speed dating service for university students, I perked up!

DateMySchool is available to current students, grad students, and alumni and to eliminate all sketchy people, you have to have a university email address in order to be verified. You never know who you’ll meet online so I’m glad that this is a requirement and weeds out the people that maybe don’t belong in this type of service.

I’ve always been a little bit hesitant about the idea of online dating mostly because it never really seemed like a sure thing. However, one in five couples have met online…and these days it seems to be pretty popular. I’m intrigued by this idea – not for myself, but about the idea in general. Learn more about DateMySchool and while you’re at it, check out Grouper! They’re also fairly new and something that I was interested in.

Nomz: Avocado Salad

IMG_4448

Avocado has always been one of my favorite ingredients. I tell all my friends that I refer to it as the glitter on top of sandwiches, but we can’t just limit it to that. It’s the foundation for guacamole – the support for any salad – and a great source for vitamins, fiber, potassium, etc. It’s the kind of fat you actually want to be eating.

Ever since I became a member of Pinterest, I’ve been stocking up on ALL recipes including avocado. So the other day when I was at the grocery store, I picked up three of them with the intent to make something truly spectacular. I didn’t exactly have all of the ingredients I needed to make one type of avocado salad so genius little me decided to mix three different recipes to see what I could conjure up.

The result?

  • One avocado
  • 7 cherry tomatoes cut in half
  • As much corn as I wanted to use
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Half a lemon squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Turns out, you can just “guess” on the dressing so don’t follow my advice above and follow one of these real recipes instead. I’d like to note that my made-up recipe wasn’t bad or anything, but sometimes you are better off following instructions. However, with salads, you can’t go wrong – it can go either way which is…bad or good. So…

Restaurant Review: Kukai Ramen

IMG_4439

The first time Kevin and I learned that there would be a new ramen joint opening up near us, we were ecstatic. Aside from the fact that we love ramen, the last time we had it was at our favorite place in Vancouver B.C., and uh…yeah we can’t just grab that every time we want it. There are even times when we have got the ramen kit back home and made it ourselves to satiate our cravings.

Kukai Ramen has been receiving quite a bit of buzz lately because of its national chain status. When we arrived, the place was packed, but we were able to be seated immediately since there were just the two of us. We ordered the Chicken Karaaje and Potstickers for appetizers and two Shoyu Ramens.

Fleet Foxes – Montezuma

Happy day after Christmas y’all!

Today I am celebrating my first stint of staycation as a post grad and HOBviously couldn’t be more excited about it. It’s nice to be able to wake up this morning and get right to work on the blog. I’ve already got four posts planned for you today (if I can get to them!) and plan on posting throughout the day and being active on the social media accounts.

I’ve been waiting to see how my blogger icons live for a very long time and now that I get to have the chance for a couple of days, I’m going to take full advantage of it!
