In addition to this post being about my first time as a wedding assistant, this is also the first post I have ever written straight from my phone. Will we be able to avoid autocorrect spelling errors? I sure hope so.
It’s no secret that I’ve always loved weddings and having had an event planning background in college and prior, I thought that wedding assisting would be a smooth transition. My friend Toby has been planning weddings as a freelancer for quite some time and when she asked me if I wanted to assist her in being her little minion, I didn’t really have to spend too much time on it. As her assistant, I accompanied her to Michael’s for decorating ideas, but more importantly, on the D-day, helping her sort through the “day of wedding coordinator checklist“. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t always glamorous, but we do the jobs we have to to ensure that those attending never see anything go awry and the bride and the groom get everything they want.
If the incorrect linens were laid out already prior to us getting there with tables set up and silverware out, but it wasn’t what the bride and groom wanted, I would do everything I could to make sure alternative linens were set out. As Toby told me last night after the wedding, this is the most intimate event you could ever plan and it means so much to the couple. That detail may seem like the biggest inconvenience, but it doesn’t matter how you feel about making the change – because what matters is how the couple feels and what they want in the end.
It has been awhile since I’ve helped out on a major event – about two years and while it was a lot of work, it was also so much fun. I love weddings because they are such a celebration. You are guaranteed to meet some characters and you will always take away with you some memories, like the guy who had too much to drink at the wedding and had to go home with the groom’s parents.
Do I ever think that I could be in Toby’s position and plan an entire wedding? It is too soon to tell, but maybe someday and hopefully when that day comes I will be more ready to take on that challenge.
