10 Hours of walking in NYC as a woman

[youtube=http://youtu.be/b1XGPvbWn0A]

I am completely behind on everything that has been on the internet this week and I finally had the chance to watch the video that went viral. I’m sure by now most of you have seen it, but if you haven’t – please take the time. Take the time to see what it’s like to be a woman walking in a city by herself minding her own business and take a second to understand how one little catcall can instantly make a woman feel uncomfortable. The actress in this video was silent the entire time during her 10 hours of walking around New York City and in those 10 hours she was – to put it simply – harrassed.

My office is in the heart of Silicon Valley and is on a very nice street with lots of shops and restaurants and plenty of people. I took a walk just the other day to CVS only to have a man walk beside me and say “nice boots.” I couldn’t help, but wonder on my walk what would compel a man to say that to me. It’s not like I walk around San Francisco and tell other guys that I like their shirt or talk at them incessently until they respond to me. It’s crazy to think that that is normal to men and it’s not okay.

I think the hardest part about watching this video was seeing the men that would trail alongside her for minutes as she walked on her own. It is scary to be followed and I hope that everyone can see this video and the next time they see this happening to another woman to step in and call someone out.

Proud Owner:

Earlier this week, I donned a black knitted hat with my outfit that hugged the back of my head perfectly. Granted, this is the first time of the fall season that I’ve worn a hat so I shouldn’t be surprised by the reactions I received by my co-workers, but I totally was.

“Oh hey! Hat!”

“Whoa, you look good today.”

“You should wear hats more.”

So I got to thinking – what other hats could I branch out into. I’ve always wanted to own a beanie, but I felt kind of weird about it because I had side bangs and trying to manage them under a hat was a little bit tricky. I saw this one by Wilfred at Arizia this past weekend in Vancouver and while it was a price that I would not normally pay for a hat, I knew I was going to get a lot of use of it. It started with me wearing it right out of the store and the rest of my day trip.

Google Inbox

[youtube=http://youtu.be/bzNTjpUMOp4]

I’m always looking for new ways to better manage and prioritize all of my various inboxes – for my personal, blog, and work email accounts. Even when I feel like I’ve got it down, I know that there’s always something that I can be doing better. Learning how to tackle email in college was never as hard as it is now. It’s something that I wish my professors would have taught me back then! When Inbox was released earlier this week, I hadn’t learned that much about it, but quickly saw it fill up in my Quora feed and was immediately intrigued by it. I saw an opportunity to snag an invite from a former intern that worked with us and jumped at the chance. I downloaded it, but am still trying to find my way around it and am wondering if I will use it more often from my mobile now than on the web. Also, I thought I would be receiving a few invites to give out as well, but my app is missing the golden ticket!

Does anyone have any tips on how I’ll be able to have my own invites, too? I think it’s also a matter of time before Google makes the app available to everyone too so maybe having the ticket won’t be necessary.

Out on the Town: 11/19

I know we’re a little bit early on letting you know that The Flavr Blue is going to be in the Bay, but that’s just how excited I am about this! I love when pieces of home find me in the Bay and I’ve been waiting for The Flavr Blue to return back to the Bay Area so there’s no way that I’m missing this show at DNA Lounge. A concert on a Wednesday evening? Looks like we’ll have to find a way to make this work. Also, while we’re thrilled about the San Francisco date, we figured that the group might have fans all over the West Coast so these dates are for you too!

Dogs of the World – Prints

Can you believe it has been a whole two weeks since I blogged on Yow Yow?! I think this is the longest we’ve ever gone without writing a post – even if it’s just a little one. I’ve actually really missed Yow Yow! a lot and am very much looking forward to being on a normal schedule soon so that I can regularly post. I came across these dogs of the world prints what feels like a month ago and have just been waiting to post about this. Interestingly enough, the day I came across this post, I was at a bar in San Francisco that had an entire wall of framed photos of dogs. It had nothing to do with the name of the bar. It was entirely random.

Yow Yow! Off Duty

I meant to write this post before I left, but then time got ahead of me and I completely forgot altogether. There haven’t been any posts this week because I’ve been hard at work with my day job and traveling for the first time with my company. I don’t talk about what it is that I do on Yow Yow! because I generally like to keep my blog life and my work life separate. However, I will say that I work in recruiting and I attended the Grace Hopper Conference in Phoenix this week celebrating women in tech!

It was the first time that I had ever been to anything like this and I found it to be not only a really positive event, but truly inspiring. It’s incredible to be amongst many talented women each expressing their passion for tech and striving for success for themselves. The conference is filled with sessions and talks throughout the couple of days, but also a career fair every day for three days. It was the most exhausting thing that I have ever been a part of, but I loved telling people what we do and seeing people come to our booth to let us know how much they love our product!

I also happened to collect the most swag that I have ever obtained at an event. It was awesome. Pouring it all out when I got home felt like Christmas. A very tech Christmas.

So my job is at its peak season currently which means Yow Yow! posts will be few and far between unfortunately. I didn’t receive a press pass for Treasure Island next weekend and am realizing now how tough it is to build up Yow Yow! in the Bay with a full time job. I think I’ve always known that. I wish I could have both, but I am very fortunate and lucky to have my job and I wouldn’t choose to have it any other way.
