What’s in a +1?

With two weddings already lined up for 2016, I’ve been giving the entire topic of weddings a lot of thought. What else is new, right? For one of my weddings, I’ll be having a +1 and I’ve been thinking for sometime about who I might be taking. If you’re coupled up, it’s kind of a no-brainer, but in an instance where you might not be, it’s a good idea to just bring someone that you know you’re going to have a fun time with. Easier said than done. Now, I have had one successful +1 in the past and one that was not so successful. Here is what I think makes the ideal +1:

  • The person that I brought with me didn’t know anyone at the wedding. I was there because I was friends with the bride and had met the groom once or twice so I also didn’t know anyone either. Some may say this is a problem and can be a little awkward. Luckily, I brought a guy friend that can get along with just about anyone. We were seated at a super fun table with all of the groom’s friends from college and by the end of the night I started to realize that everyone at the table loved him especially. Maybe I was even a little bit annoyed that they liked him better than me!
  • Bring someone who loves to dance. I also like dancing so I already know I’m going to be on the dance floor and I don’t want to have to worry about someone who is going to shy away from it. No one likes a party pooper that wants to hang out in the corner.
  • A good +1 is someone who won’t embarrass you. You don’t have to worry that they’re going to be socially awkward, say anything inappropriate or worst of all – get too drunk.
  • A good +1 is someone who is willing to be fair to you. They won’t let you pay for / take care of everything and will help pitch in. After all, you’ll providing them with a fun night of food, drinks, and partying! (just kidding! the bride and groom are doing that, but you’re taking them along for the ride!) They’ll also help you navigate any awkward or uncomfortable situation as they come up.
  • Bonus: If your +1 is willing to be a wingman for you, then you’ve really nailed it!

Cyril, thank you for setting that bar incredibly high several years ago!
