Golden Globe Awards 2017

Viola Davis in Michael Kors Collection

I spent a great deal of time today glued to my TV. Those hours of the red carpet and the actual award show aren’t hours that I can get back. My two takeaways? Well, I didn’t watch enough good movies in the last year and everyone that tried to pull off a long-sleeved dress this year on the red carpet failed. I did have a couple of favorite looks though and they came from those that surprised me! I always like doing this post the night of the award show so that people can have something to scroll through when morning comes around so with that here are my favorite looks as well as those that missed the mark.

I’m actually tired of this trend with dresses being one shouldered and have been for awhile, however, I love this color on Viola and she looks stunning. I also like that she decided to simplify both her and makeup so that the dress could just do its thing. The head-scratching moment of the night for this dress was when Ryan Seacrest asked her what color her dress was while everyone at home was like “um, can’t you tell what color this is?”

Sarah Jessica Parker wearing Vera Wang

Very rarely am I ever impressed by anything SJP wears. She looks like a marshmallow in this gown and I’m not happy with the way she styled her hair. The only way this look could redeem itself is if it were sleeveless and her hair were let down.

Ryan Gosling in Gucci

He can do no wrong.

Pharrell Williams with Helen Lasichanh

Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan

It’s a nice look, but it’s not one worth talking about for years to come.

Olivia Culpo in Zuhair Murad

Okay so the sheer volume of this is a little bit too much. I follow Olivia on Instagram so I saw some behind-the-scenes of her carrying the side of her dress as she was walking down the carpet and I thought it was just too heavy, but I do like the unique cut of it. It’s different and it’s not long-sleeved so we don’t hate it. I think I would like it more though if it weren’t so busy all around and if it was just busy on either the skirt part of the dress or just the top half.

Carrie Underwood wearing Iris Serban

I was incredibly disappointed by Carrie’s look on the carpet tonight. The top half of her dress is just a mess. It’s neither pretty nor cute and in fact, just reminds me of human anatomy. I realize that’s a bit harsh, but look at it! Tell me you don’t see it.

Jessica Chastain in Prada

Um so Jessica Chastain and Amy Adams never get me excited about their looks on the carpet. Ever.

Naomie Harris

We don’t know who she’s wearing, but we like this!

Hailee Steinfeld wearing custom Vera Wang

I know I’m supposed to like custom gowns so much more, but those sleeves! Argh!

Naomi Campbell wearing Versace

Looks like a pageant gown. A very nice pageant gown.

Nicole Kidman wearing Alexander McQueen

I want so badly to love this dress especially because I know others are saying she should be on the best-dressed list, but the sleeves are too much for me.

Jonah Hill stiff as a board!

Reese Witherspoon in Versace

This is perfect as far as simple dresses go and the thigh-high slit definitely brings this up a notch.

Kristen Wiig in Reem Acra

We sort of feel an obligation to always include her in these posts, but I can honestly say that she does not ever make me laugh.

Eddie Redmayne in Prada

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wearing Georges Chakra with Brad Hall

I don’t like this.

Chrissy Teigen wearing Marchesa and John Legend wearing Gucci

Emma Stone in Valentino

Our favorite look of the night!!

Evan Rachel Wood wearing custom Altuzarra

OKay so I think the message that she had on the red carpet was positive and it’s great that she is letting little girls everywhere know that you don’t have to wear dresses to these events. That’s fine, but let the record show that she’s not the only woman to ever have done this. Janelle Monae has been doing this for YEARS.

Heidi Klum

On top of being over long-sleeved dresses and those that are one-shouldered, I’m also over black and white ones too.

Sofia Vergara wearing Zuhair Murad Couture

Who decided that sleeves were going to be the trend this year?

Donald Glover

Sienna Miller wearing Michael Kors Collection

With all of the chunky jewelry, I actually would have loved it if this dress didn’t have cutouts and was a sleek t-shirt gown.

Anna Kendrick wearing Vionnet

I feel like she’s worn a dress exactly like this before…

Janelle Monae wearing custom Armani

This looks fun!

Zoe Saldana in Gucci

This is my 2nd favorite look of the night after Emma! I think I actually missed Zoe on the carpet during the pre-show so I didn’t see this look until the award show, but we love this romantic look. The ruffles aren’t overwhelming and the two-tone is really very pretty. That bow just seals the deal on how perfect this look really is!

Brie Larson wearing custom Rodarte

Not my favorite, but acceptable.

Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabbana

It’s cute! I don’t remember seeing anything like this this evening and the golden hue works well with Kerry’s complexion and her accessories.

Winona Ryder in Viktor & Rolf

This just looks like an overwhelming amount of fabric.

Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton

This is a confusing look for me and I didn’t enjoy this.

Justin Timberlake in Tom Ford with Jessica Biel in Elie Saab

That is a very daring plunge line! I actually am okay with a deep plunge, but think that it could’ve worked better with the overall dress if it weren’t so low and not rectangular.

Busy Phillips in Stella McCartney

Pretty! I feel like she blends in with the backdrop too, but I like the combination of yellow and green.

Claire Foy wearing Erdem

This fabric looks sooooo pretty and I was itching to see something resembling rose gold on the carpet tonight, but I think I would’ve done this look a little bit differently. Sleeves.

Thandie Newton in Monse

Are these supposed to resemble flames?!

Octavia Spencer in custom Laura Basci

Michelle Williams in Louise Vuitton

Our third favorite! The off the shoulder look is still a favorite of mine and this is so subtle and delicate. Also – bonus points for the choker. Duh!

Drew Barrymore wearing Monique Lhuillier

From this angle, this dress looks fantastic…as far as dresses with sleeves go, but from the front view, I was so-so on it.

Amy Adams in Tom Ford

Not exactly memorable for me.

Natalie Portman wearing Prada

So Viola wasn’t the only one that can wear yellow, but between the two dresses, I still love Viola’s more. Maybe this is even more closer to Chartreuse than yellow.

Ruth Negga in custom Louis Vuitton

This piece intrigues me. I like it, but I can’t exactly determine what I like about it and there’s something that I don’t like about this look too, but we can’t quite put our finger on it…

Milo Ventimiglia in Ralph Lauren

JESS! Our favorite!

Riley Keough wearing Chanel

I don’t quite understand this and when I learned that she was going to be at the Golden Globes, I was actually excited to see her look. This missed the mark for me. It’s a little bit too busy in all of the wrong ways and I would’ve liked to see her in something that was more toned down.

Mandy Moore wearing Naeem Khan

How much do y’all love This Is Us?! There was a marathon yesterday so naturally we watched the whole thing all over again even though we’ve been watching the season all along. I’m really excited for this series, but I love this dress on Mandy. She looks like a little princess! I didn’t think I would like the caped look and to be honest, I’ve hated it previously, but I don’t hate this one.

Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham

I can’t get on board with the rectangular deep plunging neckline! Everything else is okay though.

Chrissy Metz in Christian Siriano

Georgina Chapman in Marchesa

Of course, but this look is amazing! So pretty and just the right amount of sheerness.

The men of Stranger Things

And Millie Bobby Brown wearing Jenny Packham.

How cute are her shoes? Also, she has the best name ever.

Felicity Jones in Gucci

*slides this over to my worst-dressed list*

Tracee Ellis Ross wearing Zuhair Murad Couture

Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra

LOVED this. Very pretty and I think Emily’s beauty look for this stuns even more than the dress does. Together, it’s a good match! This also tops our best dressed list.

Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad Couture

It’s a little too Disney Princessy for me.

Louise Roe wearing Monique Lhuillier

THOSE SHOES!
