Grammys Promo Featuring Taylor Swift

I wanted to love this promo; I swear I did. We’re a sucker for kids and at a time like this where we need to shine the spotlight a little bit more on young women, this was an ad that I wanted to back. However, something didn’t sit well with me. The fact that Taylor Swift has been silent about the election and (somewhat) silent about the women’s march despite the fact that she claims to be all about feminism is confusing. At a time when she needed to be a role model for so many, she instead chose to be silent. On top of this, Taylor was dethroned this past year and completed outed by Kim Kardashian in what I consider the most memorable takedown of 2016. I posted this Buzzfeed article the other day about how Taylor Swift continues to thrive as the victim and I thought the writer did a great job on it. As you read the article from the beginning, each scenario continues to build and build until we realize that none of these are coincidences after all. Every word to the press and move from Taylor was actually pretty calculated.

So while some are displeased with this ad because Taylor hasn’t spoken up enough recently with everything going on, I’m sort of just a little peeved that we’re letting her shine on again as the role model when she has been manipulating everything to skyrocket her career. Is this the example we should be setting for young girls? Why does Taylor get a pass?
