Breaking Down the Blanket Scarf

Scarf – Oak + Fort / Dress – Aritzia

Real talk: I’m wearing this scarf right now in my home. Today, the Bay Area started raining again and when I got back home after work, my apartment was freezing! We’re still trying to recover and regain warmth. I’ve posted about this scarf many times before so it’s no secret that I’m actually in love with it. This was the same scarf that I discovered on Oak + Fort’s Instagram page and after seeing it for the first time, I drove myself right up to San Francisco to purchase it from their store in Hayes Valley. We had to try it on first HOBviously. This scarf is gigantic. It eats up all of my little scarves for breakfast, but that’s why we love it. It was a little bit intimidating at first and because of the size, I almost didn’t buy it. It’s the one item in my closet though that has received the most compliments and is cozy for those winter days and spring days that are still trying to be winter.

So what’s the best way to wear a blanket scarf? I don’t think there is one! Like bad hair days, I have bad scarf days and good scarf days. Some days I get it right and other days, I can’t be bothered. No matter what I do the scarf doesn’t look good and I just do away with it altogether. Here are two ways to wear it though that generally work best for me.

First, you can drape it over your shoulders with one side much longer than the other. Start wrapping the longer side around your neck over and over again until your neck is invisible. It will sort of look like the picture above. If you’ve got that, you’ve nailed it.

The other way is much simpler. I call it the “Grandma” look. Take your long blanket scarf and fold it so that it’s a triangle shape. Drape it over your shoulders and against your back and wear as a shawl. If you don’t have a jacket and you have a thick enough scarf, sometimes this works in a pinch!
