Needed the Long Weekend

Having a three day weekend to kick off the summer season was such a delight. I know it’s not over yet, but I’m currently relishing in every little bit of it. It didn’t occur to me how much I needed one until it was actually here. I happen to be in a career where there is always work to do. Lately, it’s all I’ve been doing and it didn’t feel like it was a problem until it became one. Don’t feel sorry for me. I chose it for myself and for the most part, it is incredibly rewarding. Going into this weekend though, I’ve had to create more boundaries for myself than I ever had. Saturday, I had plans to head up to Calistoga with two of my close friends. I’d never been before and was so excited to spend some time in wine country. Because it was one of those all day trips, there just wasn’t going to be a time for me to work. Sunday was my cleaning, errands, and work day. And Monday was reserved for enjoying the last part of my weekend before going back to work. Kevin is also flying in for the day and of course, I don’t want to be working when there’s so many other things that we could be doing.

Readers, I hope you had a great weekend! I’d love to hear how you separate out your weekends and find balance or are you all just lucky enough that you don’t even have to think about work ever?!

Wedding Mondays

I thought that I was going to be done with my wedding season when I reached the end of March. I had a record of 2 in one month – a first time for me – but I was prepared for my wedding season to end just as it was beginning. Lo and behold, a month went by and I found myself being invited to one more. The first guy in my close group of guys friends is getting married in August and all of us could not be more excited for the big day. Wedding Mondays is a series that is hard for me to keep regular these days for a couple of reasons. 1) They require finding the perfect video 2) It’s not like a normal post where you can just toss in a video and send it off into the interwebs. Each video is special and it requires me to do a little bit of commentary every now and then.

I know this is a little controversial, but I am obsessed with black bridesmaids dresses. I’ve been thinking about these for the last year and am almost sure that I’ll end up making that same decision for myself in the future. The details in this wedding are just exquisite. The florals, the embroidered denim jackets… and can I just mentioned that I love the fact that the bride and groom did their first dance to “Alabama Shakes – I Found You?” It’s the perfect modern day song for a first dance at a wedding. This post doesn’t do this wedding any justice so please, please, please head on over to their feature over at [Green Wedding Shoes]

Indoors @ Freda Salvador

Top – Aritzia / Denim – Citizens of Humanity

If I’m being honest, these boots are a bit clunky to go shopping in, but they do make for quite a look. Elisa had been up in the city earlier that day and decided that she needed to buy a pair of new shoes. Since I hadn’t ever been to Freda Salvador before I had to come along for the ride. I had just purchased this backless white Aritzia tee very recently at the time and needed to wear it on a regular basis. Pairing it with the Citizens of Humanity gives it a very laid back casual feel, which is typically hard for me because I would never be one to say that I’m a “jeans and a t-shirt” kind of girl. Never.

Christian Dior

You can tell how my taste in fashion has evolved based off the collections I post over the years. When I first started writing about different collections for every season, a younger me would have thought that Christian Dior was a bit too extravagant. While I loved the florals, the varying prints and colors would have been too much for me as I would have preferred something much simpler. Basics were my thing in adolescence. Now looking at these gowns, it would be my dream to even have the opportunity to try one on. I’m curious to see how much these would eat me up and even though some may say that they are outrageous and eclectic, I think they are perfect. I wonder what event I’d be able to wear one of these at someday. A girl can dream…

Oscar de la Renta

Is this a Resort collection or a Bridal collection? This pastel color palette is simply stunning and right out the gate, we feel like we need to own every piece. As you continue to scroll through, you’ll fall in love with each piece more and more one right after the other. I’m especially a fan of the end of the collection where I envision a bit of bridal in the mix!

Channeling Blossom

Dress – Urban Outfitters / Sweater – Margaret O’Leary / Denim Jacket – Gap / Hat – Nordstrom / Booties – Vince Camuto / Sunglasses – Marc Jacobs

For once, there’s a lot going on in this outfit! There’s so much to love about it though. As I get older and my friends start to marry off, it means that I have many more weddings to attend than I ever did before. I’d be lying to you if I said that I hadn’t ever considered services like Rent the Runway before, but the truth is, I love owning my pieces. This year, I was convinced that I’d be able to re-wear my wedding guest dresses again and that’s exactly what I did. I wouldn’t feel good about only wearing something once and it allows me to stretch my creativity when I can pair something like a wedding guest dress with things I already have in my closet. This dress above was only the second time I had worn it with the first being at Mandi and Eric’s wedding back in September 2016. It looked a little bit different back then and it was styled in a more formal way.

Wearing it for a more casual day-to-day outfit brought to my attention that this dress is a little bit more sheer than I expected it to be! Thank goodness for the slip underneath, but even that made it seem like we were at risk sometimes. To make it more casual, I threw one of my favorite pullover sweaters onto it and added the denim jacket for an extra layer. The hat and the shoes matched the sweater and kind of felt like I was pulling the outfit together with these pieces. You also can’t see it, but I’m wearing a black choker, which looking back now, was probably not as necessary.

I couldn’t tell you what I was thinking of when I woke up that morning and put on this busy outfit. It did, however, remind me of one of my favorite 90’s icon – Blossom!

Zac Posen

The Resort 2019 collection is here and just getting started! Many of these collections tend to be much smaller than a normal fall or spring, but I tend to favor more of the selection. Since we started writing about fashion on Yow Yow! I’ve always featured the collections of every season – at least my favorites. Zac Posen has consistently been a highlight for me. When I think of his pieces, I envision strong, feminine pieces that are clean and crisp. It’s weird for me to call it crisp because when I think of crisp, I’m thinking of a white button-up of some sort, but will you just look at his work below? The lines, the folds and the fit – all perfection.

I spend a lot of my time watching Netflix – shows, films, originals, whatever. My favorite tends to be the documentaries in the fashion category. I don’t want to say that I watched House of Z and it changed everything for me, but it definitely did have an impact on how I viewed his work and where he came from. I learned so much from that documentary and watching that and others just continues to fuel my passion for the fashion industry. It actually is amazing at how opposite it is from my current life, but while fashion appears to be fun and freeing for those outside of that world, it also is incredibly demanding and at times heartbreaking. That seems to be the takeaway that I have from all of these documentaries and The Devil Wears Prada of course.
