Iris Zhang and her Shawn Mendes Covers

You may have noticed that Yow Yow! has been heavy on music content lately. It’s not by coincidence! Despite not taking the music career route in my own life, it is still very much something that I think about every day. When I’m not on the phone or in meetings, my headphones are always over my ears. At night, we come home and watch more YouTube music documentaries. I’ve recently become partial to YouTube’s Artist Spotlight Series and crave more, but they aren’t coming out fast enough! I’ve even been reaching out to friends of mine in the industry still to see how I can become more involved in my free time. Where we will find the time is beyond me, but I’m hoping we can make something work.

I recently stumbled across [Iris Zhang] while watching another YouTube video in which Shawn is watching one of her covers! And I quickly gravitated towards her channel. In early Yow Yow! days we were sharing covers all the time and I’ve really missed that and discovering new artists. Shawn Mendes, himself, also started out doing covers so this feels serendipitous.

Artist Spotlight Series – Maren Morris

I’ve been looking into this series ever since I saw Shawn Mendes’ recently. I was surprised even getting chills just watching the intro to Maren’s short doc. I’ve been a fan of hers for a couple of years now, but seeing her live in San Francisco this year really solidified everything for me. “The Middle” was what skyrocketed her career, but now we’re getting a glimpse into the music that she’s really making and why it’s impactful. It’s not the cookie cutter mainstream pop that she did, but she can do that also.

This has been one of my favorite albums this year. I can’t tell you how many times I cycle through her songs on a weekly basis. She’s our ultimate girl crush and I’m so grateful to have learned about her early on. If you’re not onto her yet, it’s only a matter of time.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Is No More

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been a launching pad for models just starting out in their career. With the announcement of the brand’s latest angels, there’s no doubt that there is disappointment that they will never see their network television debut. Announced today, Victoria’s Secret will be taking the fashion show in a new direction. Gone are the days in which we see behind the scenes footage, interview style montages, and overdone performances.

For the last year, Victoria’s Secret has been littered with poor press and declining sales. To make matters worse, last year’s show tanked in ratings. Even after the show aired, it was questioned immediately if it would return in 2019. And now we know, it isn’t.

In a memo sent to the brand’s associates, Leslie Wexner – CEO of the parent company shared:

“We have decided to re-think the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Going forward we don’t believe network television is the right fit,” he said, noting that the brand was looking into developing a “new kind of event” for different platforms in the future, but he gave no further details on the matter.

While we may not share next year’s performances and photos in the same manner as previous years, I’m confident that we’ll still find a way to share the looks.

2019 Met Gala Red Carpet

Liza Koshy in Balmain

I had to look up the “Camp” theme several times to figure out what it truly meant. I’m still not quite sure if I understand the definition of it. My takeaway is that it’s pink, tulle, and crowns and we do not hate it. In all honesty, I’m a huge fan of the pink carpet and I loved many of the looks from the evening. However, I will say that this year was the most extravagant. What I loved about previous years was how wearable these looks have been and instead it’s turned into a little bit more of a spectacle than I would have liked. Maybe that’s what the point of the Met Gala is. It’s supposed to be a showcase of whimsey and imagination and if that’s the. case then I will get on board next year, but for now I want to hold onto what I thought made this event on the first Monday in May every year so special.

Shawn Mendes Performs on SNL

Shawn is 20 years old and it’s a little weird to find ourselves attracted to him, but I will say that I find him extremely talented. His songs are simple and complex at the same time and usually written alongside Teddy Geiger. If some of you have been following Yow Yow! since the early days, then you also know that we find Teddy to be an incredible songwriter. She still is today and the two of them are very close.

I was listening to the radio today while running errands and of course, this song was everywhere. We learned that this song was actually written for Dua Lipa and in a turn of events, he kept it for himself. It was the right move because this song is exquisite. Since I’ve been battling insomnia from my jet lag, I basically listened to this song on loop after his SNL performance for hours straight afterwards. It spiraled into Shawn Mendes YouTube videos, but we don’t have a problem with this.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Married In Vegas

Trust me when I tell you that I never thought Sophie and Joe would become one of my favorite celebrity couples. I’ve always been a fan of The Jonas Brothers from the start, but I have never really watched Game of Thrones. I don’t even know their backstory even though I’m sure I could find it out in five seconds through a Google search.

Sophie first caught my eye when she appeared in their comeback music video for “Sucker” alongside the other Jonas wives. Back then, she was still a fiance, but a total scene stealer in the best way possible. Her moves were dynamic and unforgettable. Who could forget her taking a bite out of the bush? The two were slated to marry this summer in Europe, but then in a curveball move, headed to the alter in Vegas after the Billboard Music Awards. Did anyone see this coming? Both reps for the two have already confirmed that the two are, indeed, married. Diplo even live streamed the event for his Instagram. It’s poor taste because I would never do that, but it felt like all rules were out with this one. Congrats to the happy couple! Sophie wore a white Bevsa jumpsuit, but we can’t wait to see what she wears for their 2nd summer wedding.

Beauty For Breakfast Pt. 37

When traveling, it doesn’t always make the most sense to bring along your entire skincare regimen. I wanted to be effective, but also bring the least amount of items with me. There wasn’t going to be time for me to mask every night, but at the very least, I could wash off my makeup, right? I was at Target getting some last minute items when I stumbled across Neutrogena’s new makeup remover cleansing towelettes. Normally, you would recognize these in it’s own square packaging with about 25 wipes. Since that seemed a bit too bulky for my suitcase and I was only gone for a week, I decided to buy this instead. I knew I wouldn’t have to take it all with me and opted for just 7 – the amount of days I’d be gone.

I’m a fan. Each towelette comes individually wrapped for single use. As opposed to having the other package, sometimes I worry that I close it incorrectly causing it to dry out by accident. Maybe I should go on to say that I’m a fan of daily anything. I even use daily contacts because it’s more hygienic and I feel the same way about these wipes. You can purchase them at any drugstore or Target, but can find more information [here]. I’m excited now that I can take these on trips with me, but also pop them into my purse or work bag for any quick cleanses!
