Artist Spotlight Stories – Shawn Mendes

I’ll never forget the first time I became a Shawn Mendes fan. I was back home in Seattle driving the family car when I started to notice every radio station playing “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” I didn’t want to like it, but this played out exactly like the scene in “Easy A.” Emma Stone hears that Natasha Bedingfield song for the first time until it becomes her favorite song!

Honestly though, loving Shawn Mendes isn’t a bad thing. I was pleasantly surprised watching this short doc. I also had no idea that he became famous through YouTube. He’s a Justin Bieber with a little less extra and we don’t mind it. Shawn seems like a kid with a good head on his shoulders. If you haven’t listened to his last two albums (my favorites!) you should definitely check them out.

2019 Billboard Music Awards

We are playing catch up on everything we missed at the award show this past week. I think it will be quite obvious what my favorite performances were before I tell you, but it’s still fun to share them here. I’m loving the Jonas Brothers comeback and Joe and Nick taking on each others’ songs. BTS will absolutely never get old to me and Ariana kills it as always. Readers, what were your favorites from the night? Also, how are we all feeling about Taylor’s new song? If I’m being honest, I prefer dark Taylor.

I love Khalid as an artist, but as a performer, he lacks a bit of presence.

Though I never attended Sasquatch, there was a part of me that was still very sad to learn when it was ending. For many of my friends, Sasquatch was an event to look forward to. I have long admired Adam Zacks for years and at one point, aspired to follow a similar path. There’s regret on my end for never getting to see one of his productions. Sasquatch is gone, but Zack’s presence will return in the form of THING. It will be later into the summer and on the tails of Bumbershoot, but it’s interesting nonetheless. The location is unique and not in the city and there are musical performances, sure, but a little bit more than that. I’m almost positive that I’ll have a few friends of mine still in the industry that will be attending, but I’m curious to know more!

Last Night I Became A BTS Fan

Until last night, my exposure to BTS was quite limited. I saw that they were at the Grammys and remembered thinking, “How cute are they?!” It didn’t go much further than that. It wasn’t news to me that they were a big deal. I’ve been hearing about BTS for what feels like years and they seem to be a group of likable men. This performance really surpassed all my expectations. I could watch them dance on repeat for hours. And while I have no idea what they’re singing and what these lyrics mean, it does not bother me one bit.

Readers, I know I’m late to the game. Don’t hate me. But how many of you have been devoted fans before now?

Diary of a Song: “The Middle”

“The Middle” was quite easily my favorite song of 2018. I knew when I had heard it that it was going to be a hit and that I would be listening to it on repeat forever. It was also a great opportunity for Maren Morris who was killing it on the country scene already, but skyrocketed with this pop smash. It was only recently that I had learned that Maren wasn’t exactly the first choice even though she was the best choice. Nearly 15 other vocalists had auditioned for the part. Demi Lovato and Camila Cabello were top contenders, but pulled out because their own songs were climbing the charts already. In the end, it all worked out the way it was supposed to.

The most interesting part of this to me was how quickly Sarah Aarons had written this song. Her vocals sound so similar to Maren’s making this the best fit after all.

Maren Morris Performs The Bones on Ellen

I mean, did any of you ever think you’d be seeing me post about a country music star on Yow Yow?! Taylor Swift doesn’t count. Maren Morris performed her latest single this week on Ellen and last week, we saw her live in concert. I, too, was shocked.

I first learned about Maren Morris years ago from a candidate of mine. He happened to be from the music industry and we were just talkin’ shop about who was up and coming. Country music has a very strong stigma to it. It has a reputation for being old-fashioned, twangy, and conservative. These stereotypes aren’t all that false. However, you all know in the last year, I’ve been on this power women kick which includes Maren and Kacey Musgraves. For me, they are the exception. My candidate encouraged me to give Maren a chance and while I was hesitant, I found myself loving her EP. She had had just a handful of songs at that time, but don’t even try and ask me how many times I had “My Church” on repeat. Likely, hundreds.

Her latest album “Girl” is exquisite and these days I find myself starting my work days with her album. Her live show last week in San Francisco did not disappoint. It was my first time at The Masonic – a beautiful venue in the city and her entire set was full of fun and no frills. What I mean by that is that she had a simple set and no outfit changes! She owned that stage, played every hit of hers and it was spectacular on her first headlining tour.

2019 Outside Lands

Y’all, after being in the Bay Area for 5.5 years, this is THE year that I go to Outside Lands. Of the headlines, I’m most excited for Anderson . Paak and Kacey Musgraves!

Pitchfork Music Festival 2019

I’ve always loved Pitchfork for leaning more towards their indie roots. It reminds me more of what Capitol Block Party was back in the day. It’s small enough that it feels like an intimate festival and still in a good space where it hasn’t turned into a complete scene like Outside Lands.
