Instagram Unveils Activity Status

Facebook has been doing this with messenger for years. You can choose to opt in or out of texting “read receipts.” So why is this any different? The differentiating factor is that with texting and with Facebook, you choose who is in your network and who you let in. You can do this with a private Instagram account as well, but for those who are public, you run the risk of more dangerous territories. The good news is that your activity status is only shown to people you follow or engage with through DM’s so this won’t be public information to everyone that follows you. A tweet I saw yesterday said that this would be more concerning for Instagram accounts that may have stalkers though.

For those of you are uncomfortable with this feature or just want to slide a little bit more under the radar once in awhile, you can easily change this in your settings.

From your profile page, click on the settings gear and scroll down. Under settings and right above “Support” you’ll find “Show Activity Status.” Just swipe that bad boy to the left to keep yourself hidden from showing the last time you were active.
