This past week, I learned something very important about myself. I am very easily influenced by things I see on Instagram and after seeing a piece on another blogger, I immediately believe that I have to own that same piece. It happened twice this week. So I have a problem. This dress was one of them. I actually saw this in a bright neon yellow/mustard being worn by a girl who works at one of the Free People stores back in Seattle who I follow and without even trying it on, my first thought was – “how can I buy this right now?” I couldn’t find it online unfortunately, but I did manage to find my way to an Urban Outfitters this past week where I discovered this in blue and after pulling it over my head, it was basically a done deal. The back cuts down pretty low and deep so it’s not something that would be appropriate for work I don’t think, but it’s completely perfect for a night out. I bought this in a royal blue… but I may buy it in the yellow too.

Proud Owner: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Saturdays are great days for shopping trips. When I was living in Seattle, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale was a BIG deal and the only Nordstrom that you needed to shop at was obviously the Flagship. Since I’m not a Nordstrom credit card holder (really need to be!) I had to wait until their sale was open to the public. So to prepare, I marked this on my calendar and was out of bed by 9:30 AM this morning to get ready for the big event. I wasn’t alone. The parking lot was already packed by the time I got there at 11. Luckily, I came in with an agenda and knew what I already wanted, but not before I took a stroll to TopShop, TBD, and Savvy just to cover all my bases.

I was in desperate need of a new wallet (I was using a hand-me-down from my mother) and a new everyday black purse (my last one from Azalea broke!) so I was very happy today when I walked away with a perfectly sized Kate Spade wallet and a Vince Camuto purse. I almost bought the matching Kate Spade purse with the wallet, but then I thought, I don’t really want to double match. I was also worried that the Vince Camuto purse was too chunky, but  I really liked that it had one main zipped up compartment and two on the side that could button up in case I needed to store more things. Better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks Nordstrom for giving me more everyday essentials to add to my collection!

If you’ve been to the mall at all recently, then you’ve been noticing that some of your favorite stores are putting high-necked cropped tops on display. I had been holding off on buying something like this for a long time, but was always so curious about owning this type of piece. When I was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago, I actually tried this on in purple and I remember feeling so self-conscious about wearing something that would show a bit of my stomach. Dresses with a slit in the back or in the side, sure. That doesn’t feel like that much skin to me, but showing some skin in the front? Well, that’s another story. Going into Aritzia the other day, I was feeling a little bit more confident so I gave it a second go. The XSmall made me feel like I was drowning in it, but the XXSmall was just right. It was black, chic, and fitted. But the bigger question was, “Could I pull this off at work?” If the answer is no, then there’s no point in buying it. One of the best perks about my job is that I can pretty much wear what I want within reason and I don’t typically like to push the boundaries very much. I used to hate working in finance and having to buy a second wardrobe – one where I knew I wouldn’t be wearing most pieces the majority of the time. Chelsea – who’s my girl at Aritzia handed me a gray slinky skirt to try on with the top and while it worked, I still didn’t feel completely 100% about it. So what’d I do? I bought it anyways and told myself that I would find a way to make it work with a piece at home. Happy to report that we made it happen today and it wasn’t that bad! It worked with actually the very first piece I ever bought at Aritzia – an olive green fitted skirt. Now, let’s go find other pieces to make this work.

I was invited to shop the MAJOR sale early at Aritzia last week, but unfortunately just couldn’t make it out to their store to try on all the goodies. Instead, I waited until it was open to the public and to my surprise they still had all of the things I wanted in all of the sizes that I was looking for. I would’ve been crushed if I had missed the sale because half of my wardrobe comes from them. This sale was so important to me that I went straight there after hopping off the plane from my trip in San Diego.

I actually own the dress (top) in burgundy, but accidentally shrunk it once to a length that is barely cutting it. I decided this time to purchase it in black and in xsmall (one size larger than my original) just to have that extra baggy look. Also, I’ve been wanting this skort forever and while it’s not a huge cut from the original price, it seemed like a good enough excuse to take the plunge and buy it.

Azure Skies Dactyl Tank – $35

While running errands yesterday, I stopped by the mall to make an exchange on a swimsuit piece that I had recently purchased. I had been getting emails from Aritzia that they were having a huge spring sale so I figured while I was at the mall, I might as well pop in. To my disappointment, it seems like the sale was only online, but that didn’t stop me from perusing the rest of the entire store where every piece was originally priced.

I told myself – I’m just browsing. My wallet is staying in my purse and I’m not going to take it out. There’s no harm in looking. This was very similar to the lie that I used to tell my grandparents when I was a kid and they took me to the grocery store and I told them that I only wanted to “look” at the candy aisle, but promised not to ask for anything. They always caved, of course. And naturally, I did too and purchased this adorable pastel colored and polka dotted tank. I almost walked right past it, but it was sort of… twinkling at me on the corner rack. It looked great with my new Uniqlo jeggings that I have been obsessed with and it’s a perfect wear for both spring and summer. I feel like every summer is a summer devoted to stripes, but I’m really looking forward to bringing back the polka dots and hopefully soon I’ll show you all some of my favorite polka dotted picks for the season!

Converse

After a couple of months disciplining myself from any shopping trips, I finally caved! And for good reason – cause it was my birthday after all! Last weekend, Kevin and I ventured up to Union Square for a little “light” shopping. I had never been to the Converse store before and wasn’t planning on buying anything because I didn’t think I needed a new pair of sneakers. During a phase in high school I thought that I HAD to have a pair of purple vans and then quickly got over that phase. But while walking through the Converse store, my eyes landed on this pair of Converse. It was nice because it didn’t come in some outrageous bright color and it was a subtle black and white – something that I would wear every day. It had to be mine. And so it was. You can’t tell from this photo, but the black top where my toes are is made out of leather! It only took me 25 years, but I’m now a proud owner of a pair of Converse!

I’m also wearing this with a pair of jeggings that I purchased from Uniqlo. Never in my life did I think I would own a pair of these, but once I slipped these on, I knew that it was a match made in heaven. I would probably wear these every day or every other day if it were socially acceptable. I realize that decision is solely up to me and that no one really cares anyways.

Proud Owner: Birthday Edition

Wilfred Free Yasmin Dress

I’ve been doing such a good job lately of saving my moneys and it’s something that I’m actually really proud of. Other than purchases made on a gift card, I haven’t bought any new clothes for myself in what feels like two months. Turns out that I never really needed to anyways. However, with my birthday just around the corner, I thought I deserved some new pieces and was pretty excited to splurge a bit on things that I knew I would love. This year, I decided that I wanted two dresses – one to wear the night I celebrate my birthday and another one to wear to work on the day of my birthday! Both dresses are from Aritzia and I adore them for very different reasons.

I have a long sleeved sweater dress similar to the one above, but I didn’t feel like it would be casual enough to wear out – plus I don’t want to wear long sleeves out. I decided to opt for this more laid back look with a sexy back cutout. I think it’s kind of fun! I’m really excited to not only wear this dress for my birthday, but for other occasions too. If this dress looks familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen it during a “Closet” post that I’ve done.

The dress below is just really pretty and quirky. I really liked the print and the black and white is very versatile. I tried this dress in an electric blue too which would be great if I were headed to a tropical island, but I didn’t find it to be as wearable as this one.

Nothing could make a Monday morning better than walking in the door and being handed your Catbird package full of goodies! For Christmas, Kevin gifted me with a Catbird gift card and it wasn’t until last Sunday that I finally decided to spend it. It’s always so hard to make online purchases, but my love for Catbird is strong so I was 82% sure that I was going to love everything that I bought.

Clockwise from top:

Up in the Air Somewhere Kitten Keepy Ring Dish – for all of my favorite little rings to be held in.

Classic Hammered Ring – Silver – even more stunning and detailed beautifully in person! I’m never taking this off.

Stamped Necklace/Bracelet – Planet – This is the cutest and I love that I get to wear something that represents the planets because it makes me feel really nerdy and geeky. The only problem that I’m seeing from this so far is that the string is so fine that it keeps getting undone. It looks a lot better as a bracelet than a necklace though. Now if I could just perfect my string tying…

What person doesn’t love to start out the year with a brand new spankin’ wardrobe?! Not only was “dressing better” one of my resolutions this year, it was also just dressing smarter. I wanted to really invest in long-lasting pieces that I knew I could wear over and over again and with other pieces that I already love. That means not succumbing to trends that are going to go away in a season and making sure that when I buy a piece I really love it. Over the holidays, I went on a little splurge at one of my favorite stores – Aritzia. I already own so much from them, but for the past couple of weeks they have been having a massive sale and naturally we had to take advantage of it. In fact, I’ve already been wearing a new piece from them every day this week and I’m bummed that I didn’t get to document it – but my new clothes aren’t going anywhere so they’ll be another opportunity for this.

I kicked off this past Monday with my new Babaton Dexter Pant. I knew that this was going to be something that I was hunting for in the new year so when I went to Aritzia I picked out a couple of black pants in similar styles. This one was actually picked out for me by a woman working at the store and granted it was the most expensive pair…but it was by far, the best pair. I love the way that I feel in these. Completely comfortable and ready to do anything. The elastic waist band was exactly what I was looking for because I didn’t want to struggle with a drawstring (too casual) and buttons and a clasp (too complicated.) When I wear these pants, I can just put them on and go. I paired these with a black sleeveless Madewell blouse and my Vince Camuto heels. It was fancy, but not too fancy. We satisfied the “I, at least, look put together on a Monday” look.

Wilfred Diamond Mosaic Blanket – $85

I never thought I would cave in and buy an oversized scarf, but I totally did. It was kind of an accident, really. Back in October, I had purchased an Aritizia beanie that I loved, but thought I had lost. On the eve of Black Friday, I decided I couldn’t live without it and purchased a replacement only to discover a couple days later that the lost beanie was just sitting in with all of my other hats. So I returned the second beanie hoping to exchange it for something just as great. I found this scarf which was the price of the beanie…and then some. I’ve been feeling a little bit self-conscious that it’s just too overwhelming for me, but I’m still deciding to completely own it anyways. Sometimes I wrap it once while throwing the rest over my shoulder and sometimes I wear it as a shawl like a grandmother. Does it even matter how I wear it? It’s warm and getting me through this winter! It comes in a few different colors, but I love this red and blue one. Tommy says it makes me look very patriotic. Yay.
