When You’re Northwest

Jacket + Leggings  – Aritzia / Hoodie – American Apparel (RIP) / Sneakers – Nike

While most locals would say that gloomy days in the Bay Area are in the worst, I kind of welcome it! It reminds me of home and instead of feeling unbearably hot all day, I can layer up and stay cozy all day long. This outfit that I wore this day was so completely Northwest of me and we didn’t hate it. I bought this American Apparel hoodie back when I was in high school and still wear it to this day. I’m also never going to let this jacket go. You’ve all seen this a million times.

RIP American Apparel

I can’t believe I’m actually writing this post. This may sound dramatic, but a part of my youth here is dying. When my scene days had reached a bougie level, that’s when I started shopping at American Apparel. It was almost like I became an upscale hipster – if that was even possible. I knew the retailer was sinking. We’ve been reading about this for what feels like years, but I didn’t think it would actually die. And now, we must prepare for the worst and figure out how to move on. And by move on, I mean all 110 stores are closing and everything is 40% off so it looks like we’ll all be at American Apparel this weekend so that we can stock up on those classic hoodies. It’s okay though, I’m hoping to find some other stores and online sites to satisfy my big comfortable hoodie cravings (hint, I’ve already started to look!) and found some nice basic hoodies for being comfortable, as well as some other detailed designs like this Chinese dragon hoodie and others that can bring a bit of zest to your daily outfits! However, I might never get over American Apparel having to close.

The news of this comes just days after it was announced that Gilden Activewear had purchased American Apparel in an auction for $88 million. To be clear, they are just acquiring American Apparel’s intellectual property and some of the manufacturing equipment. Not included in this acquisition were its 110 stores (which will all close by April) and their LA headquarters.

I had to scroll through pages of Google images because I forgot how inappropriate their advertisements use to be and my parents wouldn’t approve of me having one of those to accompany this post.

RIP to my favorite pieces that you can still buy… for now.

Top – American Apparel / Denim – Gap / Sneakers – Nike

If you’ve been wondering why you’re seeing so many outfit posts this weekend it’s because we are accelerating them! We’re tired of having our outfits date all the way back to the fall so we’re playing a little catch up right now  to get to present time. For this outfit post, I remember being inspired by another post that I had seen and wanted to try something different by playing with textures and a patterned ground. To keep my jeans white, I sat on an unfolded napkin that my butt is covering. I typically don’t wear white jeans in the fall because… well, it’s not summer, but I was feeling a little bit adventurous this day. I also LOVE these Nike high tops that Kevin helped me find years ago. I don’t get to wear them as often because they are difficult to pair things with, but when we do get to wear them, it’s an exciting moment for us. It’s hard to see it in this photo, but they are gingham patterned!

“You Look Very Coachella Today”

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

(ASTR dress, American Apparel pullover, mother’s belt, mother’s shoes, Forever21 headband)

It’s been awhile since we’ve had an outfit post sans Space Helmet, but we’re bringing it back! I don’t think I could have ever pulled this outfit off in Seattle during November, but luckily that’s just not an issue in the Bay. Inspired by an outfit I saw last night on Pinterest, I decided to pair together some of my favorite pieces, but that have never actually been worn together. The last time I wore this dress was when I was wine tasting up in Sonoma, but it’s a pretty perfect dress to wear for any summer wedding. Since I missed my chance, I was determined to find a way to make it into this season somehow. The story about how this dress came to be in my closet is quite interesting. I was shopping for a garden-party themed dress for my going-away, but I didn’t think that it was the most appropriate. While tribal boho chic, it didn’t scream garden party, especially because the garden party was going to be held in one of the most beautiful marquees that a friend of ours found via a specialist company, and whilst I loved the dress, I’m not sure how good it would’ve looked in the type of marquee that we would be expecting to see at the party. When I think about marquees, I instantly think glamour and in my heart of hearts, I’m not quite sure how this would’ve looked in this particular setting. I must have come back to this dress three-four times during my shopping trip because I couldn’t make up my mind, but ultimately I decided that if it didn’t work out for the party, it might for another occasion. I didn’t regret my decision!

The Return of Space Girl

WHOA! Space Girl is back y’all! I know I promised to bring back this installment for winter quarter after posting my last one in December, but truth: winter quarter is difficult. With 90% of the days being gray and the fact that my photographer Veronica and I had opposite schedules, Space Girl just wasn’t possible. I am, however, excited to announce that we will be bringing it back slowly this spring quarter and incorporating it more into our weekly routines.

This shoot was shot by my dear friend Bree on a whim! Now, you’re probably scratching your heads wondering why this outfit is featured because a) it’s the most casual uniform that anyone could ever wear and b) because I don’t normally wear these things, but that’s what makes it so perfect. Believe it or not, I actually like casual wear. I grew up being a jeans and a t-shirt kind of girl. I love the basics and being able to dress them up too.

There are plenty of style bloggers out there who love to wear items only once or enjoy wearing outrageous outfits around town that don’t make much sense, but that’s not really me. With this Space Girl post, I wanted to showcase to all of you a more relaxed style out of my closet. Now that we’ve got the “casual” out of the way though and the weather is picking up, you will be seeing some more of my favorite pieces featured!

Aww Hell No

American Apparel is trying to make the rice paddy hat happen. It’s not going to happen. (So we hope) Well, this certainly looks like a huge offensive fail. Also why are they trying to sugar coat it by calling it a “Conical Asian Hat?” YAAACK the retailer just makes me feel super uncomfortable sometimes.
