This Weekend:

What We’re Watching: Start-Up

Now that we’ve finished Record of Youth as of this week, we finally have time to start a new drama. There’s nothing stopping me from watching several dramas at one time, but I find that it’s easier to keep track of all the storylines and characters if I isolate them. In its first week alone, everyone was raving about Start-Up. Both my brother and cousin started this before I could and were talking about it in our group chat to which I felt extreme FOMO. Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do! Start-Up is airing new episodes weekly on Netflix.

What We’re Listening To: Ariana Grande – Positions

I’m a little bit behind on music as well since I’ve never got this whole album to get through and Jay Park’s! “Positions” the single is growing on me, but the reviews thus far seem so-so. As excited as I am to have new music during a pandemic, I know these times aren’t easy for anyone so I’m likely to get everyone some sort of a pass. And if I’m being honest, the album I’m most anticipating is BTS’s “BE!”

What We’re Wearing: [Morgan Lane Silk Face Masks] – $78 on preorder

I read something this morning that said the scariest thing you could do this Halloween is NOT wear a mask. If you’re going to be celebrating in some way, shape, or form, better mask up because cases are rising everywhere. I bought this pack a couple months into the pandemic when I started getting maskne and was suggested by my aesthetician to try silk. These have been a god send ever since. Naturally, the black is my favorite because it makes every outfit 10x better and edgier. We’ve got lots to say about these masks so we’ll make a dedicated post for it soon!

What We’re Eating:

One of my favorite traditions before Sunday football games is getting a set of spam musubi and a hot lunch plate from Takahashi Market in San Mateo. Because of the pandemic, they’re limiting the number of plate lunches they are serving and only doing musubi on pre-order and first come first serve. Kevin and I are going to try and make a stop tomorrow to see if we can snag some, but we have no idea how big the demand will be. These are my favorite snacks, but also double as a meal when I’m feeling lazy.

Our Favorite Grammy 2020 Performances

https://youtu.be/AqtooBbxuaw

It was difficult to watch the Grammy’s yesterday evening when there was a very obvious dark cloud over the event. The loss of Kobe Bryant was touched on a number of times during the show and to be honest, it’s still carrying over today and will continue for some time. In comparison to other Grammy Awards, yesterday’s was all about the performances and a handful of key awards. Not much was presented on stage aside from from presenting the performers. Here are just a few of my favorites.

YouTube won’t give me the videos of all the performances I want to highlight, but I can share three from these amazing ladies. For Demi, this was her first performance since she overdosed in 2018 and was hospitalized. Camila’s ‘First Man’ single is a dedication to her father and it’s impossible to watch this without having a wet face afterwards.

Other performances that make my list include:

Grammy Awards 2020 Red Carpet

Lizzo wearing Atelier Versace

It’s bittersweet to be watching the red carpet this evening. With the news of Kobe and his daughter’s passing, it’s not surprising that celebrities want to get across the carpet without doing any interviews. Still, as everyone has been saying ‘the show must go on’ and while difficult, it’s turning out to be pretty great so far. Tonight, we’re highlighting look and tomorrow we’ll share our favorite performances including the tribute to Kobe.

2019 Billboard Music Awards

We are playing catch up on everything we missed at the award show this past week. I think it will be quite obvious what my favorite performances were before I tell you, but it’s still fun to share them here. I’m loving the Jonas Brothers comeback and Joe and Nick taking on each others’ songs. BTS will absolutely never get old to me and Ariana kills it as always. Readers, what were your favorites from the night? Also, how are we all feeling about Taylor’s new song? If I’m being honest, I prefer dark Taylor.

I love Khalid as an artist, but as a performer, he lacks a bit of presence.

Song of the Day

Ariana Grande – Needy

We haven’t spent any time talking about Ariana Grande’s latest album, but this is one of my favorite songs from it! I love how simple and seamless it feels. With back to back albums, it can be easy for all of her songs to feel like they are starting to mesh together. This one stands out on its own.

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” Mashup

Our girl Ari is thriving right now! But that doesn’t mean that she won’t stop at nothing to claw her way to the top. Even while she’s climbing the charts, her haters still have some criticism. Right after “7 Rings” was released, many people were quick to point out some similarities between her song and songs by Soulja Boy, Princess Nokia and 2 Chainz. You could watch separate videos of her copy catting the three artists or you could watch this one video which encompasses it all.

Conclusion: “7 Rings” is a bop. The similarities are nearly spot on, but at the end of the day, what is anyone going to do about it?

Song of the Day

Ariana Grande – 7 Rings

She’s the female anthem queen of our time. And while this is not even remotely close to being a favorite song for me, we still find ourselves loving it.

Ariana Grande – imagine

It’s true, I am one of those Ariana fans that waits on bated breath for her new singles to drop. When I noticed the countdown for “imagine,” I was all for it and wasn’t disappointed in the least when I heard it for the first time. Unlike “Thank u, next” “imagine” takes on a different form. There’s a sadness to it and she has even alluded that while “Thank u, next” is about acceptance, “imagine” is about denial. Fans of hers have already speculated their theories that “imagine” is her song for Mac Miller. There’s a few references that lead to that, but he also had the words “Imagine” tattooed on his arm.

Whether or not this song is about Mac Miller specifically, it’s a beautiful piece and I have a feeling we’re going to love her next album more than Sweetener.
