The Aftermath of Black Friday

All I have to say is, thank god I don’t have to participate in Black Friday anymore whether it is as a shopper or as a salesperson working in retail. There used to be this sort of allure around Black Friday that kind of intrigued me and I can only remember it for one year. It was the night after Thanksgiving and my local mall was having this thing where they opened early and there was a performance and I was meeting up with my best friend and I was eating it all up. I don’t think it is like that at all anymore and this photo proves just how chaotic the whole event can be. This photo was taken at a Nike outlet in Seattle on Black Friday and it looks like the customers just came in and destroyed the place. How is this going to be a fun shopping environment for anyone? It’s one of the reasons why I can’t be bothered with shopping at outlets or thrifting anymore because it’s the sifting part that gives me such anxiety. Ain’t nobody got the patience for that – at least I don’t. -_-

Here’s hoping that all of you can stay safe and shop online (hello Cyber Monday!) or hopefully today you shopped for Small Business Saturday!

How We’re Doing Black Friday in 2015

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

Nobody loves a good bargain buy or a sale more than I do, but Black Friday is an unofficial holiday that I no longer participate in. I’ve worked a Black Friday during my time in retail and it was hell. And as a shopper, it’s not that much better. I don’t enjoy beating the rush and scouring the floor for those hidden gems that people tossed on the ground and didn’t want. I’m just not much of a digger and on my day off, I’m not looking to put in any work especially not at the mall.

I will say, however, that I was almost convinced to participate when my favorite retailer, Aritzia, gave me a call this past weekend to let me know that I would have early access to their Black Friday sale online and in-stores on Monday and Tuesday of this week. I was VERY close to making a stop by their store on my way home from work, but then decided that maybe this year, I’ll do something crazy and bold and save my money instead. I’m actually looking forward to just spending Black Friday hanging out with my cousins and hopefully away from the stores.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t still shop though… so here are a few sales that I know of happening from some of my favorite retailers that I’m willing to share:

  • Abercrombie & Fitch (yes, I’m including them!) – On Black Friday the entire website is 50% off until Noon
  • Aritzia – from Black Friday until Sunday, the 29th get your favorite pieces at a steal and up to half off.
  • Dolce Vita – Starting November 24 and ending November 29 – an extra 20% off all sale and free ground shipping. Use code BLACK20 at checkout.
  • Gap – 50% off your entire purchase through Saturday, November 28th
  • Nordstrom – An additional 20% off both in stores and online
  • Uniqlo – Almost everything except for some select outerwear pieces will be under $50. Accessories start at just $1
  • Urban Outfitters – Extra 30% off in stores and online for sale stuff

And then there’s… you know… Cyber Monday.

Why Skipping Black Friday Might Be A Good Idea

For many stores across America, Black Friday will be starting at midnight – 2 and 1/2 hours from now. I’ll admit that for some time this week I really wanted to make my way out to Urban Outfitters‘ “50% off all sale stuff sale” – actually I think I was supposed to go with Alyssa, but we never officially set those plans. Sorry girl! I mean, that’s a pretty great sale, isn’t it? Then I remembered that Sokina went to it last year and said that it was an absolute nightmare. Maybe I’m saving myself the stress from missing it. Skipping Black Friday is a good idea because I can…

  • watch A Very Gaga Thanksgiving – which starts now
  • sleep in tomorrow morning
  • eat…some more
  • avoid long lines
  • avoid seeing people from my high school at the mall
  • not be distracted by shirtless men at Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister
  • still watch my late night television
  • buy stuff online the next day in the comfort of my own home
  • avoid being trampled and stomped on by crazed shoppers
  • avoid buying stuff I won’t need

Abercrombie and Hollister Are Raising the Temperature of Black Friday

Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister are bringing their A-game to Black Friday this year. Word on the street is that the brands have enlisted thousands of shirtless men to be present at both stores when they open at midnight across the country. To be honest, this makes me a little nervous. There are some crazed shoppers out there on Black Friday and shirtless men combined with shopping and high energy levels… I don’t know. Shirtless men roaming malls is already enough to catch anyone off guard.  I’d love to see how well this tactic works on shoppers tomorrow at midnight. For some reason, I just envision that scene from Austin Powers where the fembots’ heads start exploding because they can’t get enough of the international spy.

Best of luck to all you shoppers tomorrow!

Eve of Black Friday

Every year, for as long as I can remember, I have always woken up early to go shopping with my parents on black Friday. It is the biggest shopping holiday of the year. BIGGER than a Nordstrom anniversary sale, I know, hard to believe right? Tomorrow might be the first year that I am not participating. I’ve been sitting here weighing out the pros and cons, but to be honest this sickness has just sucked out all of my strength.

I’ve been thinking a lot about clothes today. So I have this question,

How do you shop?

How do you know when to make a purchase and when to forget about it? How do you get dressed?  There are very few people in my life who actually know how it is that I get dressed in the morning. How I even begin to start my day…those are my roommates: past and present. I think you would have to observe me for a day if you wanted to understand my process. When I shop, that’s another story.

I’m someone that feels clothing. I know what kind of material I like and don’t like. If you’re ever with me when I’m shopping, I will continuously touch racks upon racks of clothing and in no way is this an OCD thing, it’s just me getting an idea for it. Before I buy a piece, I will take a second to think about what I can wear it with. If I can’t wear it with more than 3 things, there’s no point in owning it.

It’s funny because I follow the fashion shows very closely and I see things that I like individually, but maybe not with the whole outfit put together. Obviously, people don’t wear those ready-to-wear outfits out in public all the time. I think if I had the chance to analyze every piece, it would be a lot easier to pair it with different things.Yet even though I can’t physically touch the clothing, I know that they are well-made. They wouldn’t cost that much if they weren’t, and they wouldn’t have the designer name attached to it either.

And lastly in my ramblings, I’m glad that I’m much more comfortable dressing the way I feel at Seattle University. High school was fun, but I never felt like I could branch out and wear what I wanted to. I had to blend in and I didn’t like that. Once during my senior year, my friends and I in yearbook decided to have an impromptu 80’s day. Who says you have to follow school-wide spirit days? I just remember getting terrible up-down looks and someone asking me “what the -eff are you wearing?” While I understand that people love the jeans and t-shirt look, it’s not for me. It’s too easy. I’m not opposed to it though, sometimes I will wear a plain top and jeans. People ask me…why I spend time getting dressed in the morning. I live by this motto that when I dress well I feel great. I don’t feel like I’m ready to seize the day in sweats and a sweatshirt. It’s not true for everyone, but that’s how I feel. Getting dressed is a challenge for me and it’s one that I don’t mind spending a few extra minutes on.
