Beautiful Bernal Heights

Y’all! Happy long weekend! I’m so #blessed to be able to have four straight days off (sort of!) I’m doing some light work email only because I am working one day next week and taking that much time off feels very unproductive to me. What is everyone up to? Other than spending the entire day blogging, I’m beginning to start my move up to the city. The boxes have been taken home and instead of physically packing, I’m still in the stage of making mental notes about what I’m actually going to be packing. Let’s just call that… “progress” k? Back in February, my dearest friend Megan came for a visit and we spent the weekend exploring different parts of the Bay Area. Every time my friends visit, I try to go to one new place so that we can both experience something together. In the years of my living here, I had never been to the top of Bernal Heights. The view really is as magnificent as it looks and it’s just a short hike up to the top.

Cozy in Brandy

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Uniqlo / Shoes – Keds

95% of the time I prefer to get dressed up for work and to spend a little bit of time constructing new outfits together. For the other 5% though? I don’t have it in me. I wake up and decide I don’t really care how anyone sees me that day and for those days, I turn to outfits like these! To me, it’s still not very dressed up at all. I’m totally completely cozy and my coworkers will still turn to me and think that I put some new effort into an outfit. It’s not true. This Brandy Melville hoodie is one of the best things I own. I think it’s one of their signatures actually and they have it in tons of colors at their store at an affordable price. I’ve had this since I first moved here in 2013 and wear it on the reg. These pants are my Uniqlo jeggings which you’ve seen a million times before and these Keds are from middle school and still wearable, but not as white as they once were.

Because You’re 90’s

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Uniqlo / Chambray Shirt – Madewell / Necklace – Moorea Seal / Booties – Vince Camuto / Choker – Urban Outfitters

2016 and 2017 are the years in which I pay homage to my 90’s spirit. It’s too easy for me these days to create all-black outfits and as simple as it can be, it sometimes feels like something is missing. I guess this is why we have light jackets and accessories, right? With this outfit, I decided to add my favorite choker and this chambray from Madewell that I bought several years back. Oh! In addition to the choker, I decided to layer it with a gold necklace for contrast in length and color. This chevron necklace is from a boutique in Seattle called Moorea Seal!

Little Bandana

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Uniqlo / Bracelet – Madewell / Bandana – Mandi’s wedding / Heels – Vince Camuto

Even though it’s 2017, it’s a little silly to me that there is still this stigma to wearing all black. I would say 60-68% of my wardrobe is made up of black pieces and I’m totally fine with that. However, sometimes when I would go to work, people still have this desire to make a comment to me about going to a funeral or ask if I am unhappy that day. Why can’t I just wear black because it’s a classic color and super chic? 🙂

I remembered getting up this day and feeling sort of satisfied with this look. I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was missing something though and I wasn’t going to be able to walk out the door without something more. I added the bracelet. Purchased from Madewell a few years back, I still really love this piece even though it has progressively gotten “worn” over time and you can tell. At Mandi’s wedding, she gifted everyone with a welcome package, which I think is such a nice treat! I’m going to be discussing this a little bit more in an upcoming post about the five things I loved the most about Mandi’s wedding, but will provide some details here. Every guest received a jar of trail mix waiting for them in their cabin and each mason jar was wrapped with a perfect forest green bandana. Now you may remember that I went through a red bandana phase last spring. We’re still wearing it by the way! But this green one is a little bit smaller, but large enough to fit around my neck. It really was the perfect accessory to complete this look.

Colour Family

Top – Aritzia / Skirt – Brandy Melville / Booties – Dolce Vita

I don’t know if I ever would have thought to dream up this combo, but surprisingly, I’m happy with the outcome. If you follow me on Instagram (@katieyowyow) then you know this blouse and I are on our last leg together. I discovered three holes in it yesterday and that was just from the front. I’m convinced there’s at least two more in the back of my shirt somehow, but it’s one of my favorites. Aritzia is a game changer when it comes to soft fabrics in their tees and their blouses and ever since I purchased my first one, I have never regretted it. And maybe you’re familiar with this skirt by now. When I first bought it, there was only one other top that I could imagine pairing it with, but I’ve since been able to wear the “Taylor Swift” corduroy skirt with 63% of my closet. Wearing all three of these pieces in the same color family can be a little tricky, but with the skirt being the most dramatic color change piece in the outfit, we were able to use it as sort of a color block. Overall, I loved how suitable this outfit was to wear for work, but it still felt really romantic in its own way and feminine.

From Pacific Northwest to New England

Chambray Shirt – Madewell / Skirt – Brandy Melville / Vest – Uniqlo

I felt like I was really trying something different with this outfit when I decided to pack it with me to Boston. And I was on the fence – is this an outfit that makes more sense for the Pacific Northwest or for the East Coast? I wasn’t sure! Even as I’m looking at this now, I think the color palette works, but I still have my reservations. I will say that though that this was my first time being in Boston during the fall and I hadn’t worn this vest for like a year. The fact that I chose to bring this with me means that I was making a statement about the purpose it would be serving. Actually, I do love this vest though. I think there are a lot of vests that you could be buying at different retailers, but not only is this one from Uniqlo very functional and warm, it’s also very affordable. Highly recommend.

I’m so excited to be sharing this upcoming series of outfits! This is the first of many from my fall traveling season. This past fall, I had the opportunity to go to Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston twice, and Houston. Each packing session was a little bit different, but that’s what made the experience so fun for me – it’s not like I could take the same stuff for every trip! My first stop on the traveling tour was Philly in mid-September so it was still pretty hot and humid during my visit and this was taken downtown on the way to one of the dinners that I had organized for my group (a celebration!) When I was younger, I used to want to live in Philadelphia because of a dream job that I had in mind for myself. It didn’t end up working out and I took a completely different career path than I had imagined. So it’s funny that this was my first time visiting when long ago, I would’ve been willing to pick up my entire life to move to this city. I only had about two full days here so it meant I didn’t have much time for exploring, but I would love to go back. There’s still so much left to see! So don’t mind the fact that these two photos were edited differently and that my entire outfit is wrinkled. I came from a work day!

Shorts and Sweater – Brandy Melville / Booties – Vince Camuto

I have this thing where I love booties, but always feel like it’s an interesting item to wear because of how weird I feel with the leg to foot ratio. It isn’t easy for us! Sometimes I wonder if it makes me look shorter or if it makes me seem too clunky. This time, we just went for it. Vince Camuto in the last year has not disappointed me with regards to shoes. I feel like these days, I’m exclusively Vince Camuto. They’re super comfy, stylish, and affordable. Here, you’re catching a glimpse of my “nude” socks from Uniqlo. I love these, but always lose them somehow in my dryer. They’re great for shoes that cut off at the ankle, booties, and my sneakers. I think they’re mostly so you can appear like you’re going sock- less, but aren’t really.

Tan Times

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Gap / Belt – Madewell / Wedges – Vince Camuto

The California sun has been good to us! This was taken last summer, but look how tan we are! It was starting to feel a lot more like this this past weekend and I think it’s just the beginning. This wall in Mountain View always makes us look good and catches the light in a really pretty way every time. It’s nice to be able to wear a tank top and jeans every once in awhile, but I wanted to take this look up a notch by wearing my favorite summer white denim. It’s not an easy wear though because wearing them means you are putting your pants at risk. For this shot below, I even brought a napkin with me so that I could sit on it and not have my bum on the actual cement. Readers, how do you style your white denim and what tricks do you have to keep them white?!

Forward

RIP to my beloved parking lot that they are now turning into yet another building in downtown Mountain View. I never saw more than a handful of cars parked here and I’m not sure why people would need to use it except for the church on Sundays, but this was such a great place for our shoots – golden hour especially! It was large so there was always a new corner for us to discover and in the evenings when the sun would go down, the light would cast a shadow on different parts of the lot. Depending on the time of day, the end result could look pretty different. Earlier in 2016, we mentioned that we were having a complete black and white phase. I love pairing these two simple colors together because it always adds up to a pretty no-fuss, effortless look. From afar, it’s basic. It’s a black sleeveless top and a white bottom, but the fact that it’s a skort adds a little more flair to it. We paired this with our favorite lace up Vince Camuto heels.
