A Note For This Week

Like many of you, I am still grappling with my feelings and my words on how to describe or even make sense of what happened this past week in Atlanta. I can’t. And it’s going to take me more than a few days to process. What I won’t do is mince words. If the media and the police dept. won’t say it, I will. This was absolutely a hate crime. There is no other way to see it. If you are someone that is publicly saying that 6/8 people killed having been Asian women at three targeted massage parlors is not a hate crime, you are making a racist statement. Ask yourself why you are defending a 21-year old gunman who has done this and what purpose this serves you. How do people begin to defend the gunman? Because he likes pizza, music, and God? And why is calling it a “hate crime” something you cannot acknowledge? Acknowledge human lives.

I’m sure when I’m ready, I will put together something more structurally sound – maybe more grammatically correct. For now, as I continue to gather myself, I want to share out a few pieces that have been written or created by other AAPI people on the aftermath of not only this week, but what we have been facing for the last year.

Being A Better Guest

There are so many useful adult life skills that I wish I had known before I had to experience it. Life would have been easier if I was able to do a trial run of my taxes for the first time. If I had had a crash course on equity when I first received it in an offer, maybe I would have negotiated differently. Sometimes even as an adult, I feel like I’m messing up the simple things. One of those was being a great well-mannered guest to my friends.

Up until a few years ago, it didn’t occur to me that I should be bringing something along with me every time I attended a dinner party. Unless it was stated ie) a Thanksgiving potluck, or a Super Bowl party, I would show up empty handed. It’s embarrassing to look back on this now, but back then I was clueless. Many dinners with Mandi and Eric went by with a home cooked meal they prepared and I only brought myself! I’m not sure when exactly that lightbulb went off for me, but it hit me hard.

For one, hosting is a great deal of effort. I rarely do it because I don’t have the space. If I am hosting, I’m typically a bit of a stress case wanting to make sure that my home is spotless and that everything is in its place. A small gesture of a gift goes a long way whether it is a bottle of wine or flowers. If you’re in need of other suggestions, this post by [Cup of Jo] was what inspired me to write this post. Fortunately, I’m visiting Mandi and Eric at the end of the month so I’ll have an entire weekend to make it up to them!

I’ve been told quite a few times that I “look” like a baker. I’m not sure which of my physical traits equate to this, but regardless, it still seems like a compliment to me. I wish I could bake! I wish I owned numerous cake pans and loved dreaming up new recipes for desserts and frosting. That might be my friend, Toby, actually. I am, however, a huge fan of eating baked goods. I kid you not – I almost snagged a third lemon cookie today at work and if it’s still on the table tomorrow, I’ll probably still try to eat it.

Baked goods with lemon are my weakness. Lemon cookies, cakes, bars, pie – you name it. I came across this recipe for a Lemon Poppy Seed Bread last night and while I’ll never make it myself, maybe I can find a nice friend that will want to make it for me (and eat it with me, of course!)

Happy Sunday morning! The weekend has flown by with birthday parties, Pride fest, and delicious meals, but more on that later! I am very much looking forward to the holiday week (ie. short week of work) and some extra snuggle time with Yow Yow! Yesterday, at Brunch I was re-introduced to my love of coffee cake and now it is all I want. I found this recipe on Cup of Jo, which I’m sure I could never make myself, but it’s nice to dream, right?

Readers, if you decide to try out the Raspberry Almond Coffee Cake, please do let me know how it turns out.
