2021 Grammys Red Carpet

Harry Styles in Gucci

I can’t tell if I’m being too harsh on award shows during a pandemic, but did anyone else find the Grammys to be particularly boring this year? Also, why didn’t I laugh at anything Trevor Noah said? The highlight of this show was less than a handful of performance and three outfit changes by Harry Styles.

Favorites of 2020

Favorite Style Icon (s): BTS

Before I even started writing this post, I knew I was in for a challenge. I’ve never had an issue deciding who was the most iconic in fashion for that year because we could always go back and look at who we shared the most for “Snaps for a Snapshot.” In a year where we had fewer red carpet experiences, that made this choice harder. And yet, it was easier. BTS truly shined in their “Dynamite” era and we were served impeccable looks for every editorial, appearance, and performance. Each one continued to top the last. Over the years, the guy have come into their own on highlighting the style that they are most comfortable with. Even though they show up as an ensemble, you can tell that they make it their own.

Runner Up: Margot Robbie

We somehow managed to get one award show season before the pandemic hit and Margot Robbie continued to stun on every red carpet.

Favorite Getaway: Los Angeles

I only had two places to choose from for this category this year and honestly, I loved Los Angeles and Phuket for two very different reasons. I think what pushed me towards LA is that I had the chance to celebrate the bachelorette of one of my best friends in a city that I love. No matter how many times I visit, I’m always being introduced to something new. Celebrating moments were few and far between, but this one was so memorable.

Favorite Artist: Dua Lipa

In 2020, I listened to an unhealthy amount of Dua Lipa. “Future Nostalgia” is a superb album and with the year that we’ve had, it was just what we needed. Full of pop tracks and dance hits, it’s actually quite difficult to be upset at any part of this album. It was the soundtrack to my summer and an album I know I’ll listen to even further into 2021.

Runner Up: Griff

Griff is just starting to come into her own, but we’re so excited for what she’ll achieve in the next year.

Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Selling Sunset

It’s not easy for me to add a new reality television series into the mix, but Selling Sunset had all the right components. The series was catty, smart, and somewhat educational? I learned so much about homes and real estate just from watching the show alone without all of the drama. The episodes are short so it feels easily digestible and it is great background noise in case you don’t want to pay attention too closely.

Runner Up: Emily in Paris

How could we forget the show that we thought we’d end up hating, but actually loved?

Favorite Item Purchased This Year: [Amazon Brand – Terry Cotton & Modal Oversized-Fit Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt] – $29.50

If you had told me that lounge wear would be my aesthetic this year (pre-pandemic) I would have thought you were lying. Contrary to what some may believe, lounge wear can be stylish as well. However, this year taught us that comfort is key. That denim jeans may be a thing of the past (for now at least) and that half zips are the ultimate basic piece to own. We’ve talked about this Amazon half zip so many times now across all of our platforms, but I could live in this for a week.

Runner Up: [BLANKNYC Good Vibes Faux Leather Moto Jacket] – $98

The girl who thought she could never pull off a leather jacket finally did!

Favorite Albums (in no particular order):

  • Justin Bieber – Changes
  • The Weeknd – After Hours
  • Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia
  • Kiana Ledé – KIKI
  • Tom Misch – What Kinda Music
  • JoJo – good to know
  • Kehlani – It Was Good Until It Wasn’t
  • Kygo – Golden Hour
  • Teyana Taylor – The Album
  • Jhené Aiko – Chilombo
  • Henry Green – Half Light
  • BLACKPINK – THE ALBUM
  • TWICE – Eyes Wide Open
  • BTS – BE
  • KATIE – Our Time Is Blue

Dua Lipa on Saturday Night Live

https://youtu.be/oDsyocmK3XI

Admittedly, I have not been doing a great job of keeping up with Saturday Night Live this year. However, I’m glad that I went back to watch these Dua Lipa performances from this past weekend’s episode. Dua Lipa had one of my favorite albums of 2020 and we’ve been a fan of hers from the start. She’s also someone I would categorize under “Most Improved” as her performances and her dancing have reached new levels this year. For the appearance on Saturday Night Live, Dua performed her two hits from the last year off her album, “Don’t Start Now” and “Levitating.”

I don’t quite understand the hat that she’s wearing in this “Levitating” performance, but I’m too tired to truly critique this.

Tiny Desk (Home): Dua Lipa

In what may have been considered the most challenging year, Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” was one of the releases in 2020 that helped me power through. Track after track, nearly every song was a bop. Actually I think I can mostly confirm that this whole album was on repeat during the summer months. That’s why I was so thrilled when I discovered today that Dua Lipa was the latest Tiny Desk! The segment itself goes by pretty quickly with her only doing four songs, but each song is in a perfect arrangement stripped down. In fact, I might even love this so much that this may be one of the Tiny Desks that I watch over and over again.

Performance of the Day

I may look back on this period of time and kick myself for how few posts I put out during quarantine. More on that later! We’re doing the best we can, but like work, even writing for Yow Yow doesn’t mean that we have our full focus during a pandemic.

Dua Lipa just released a sophomore album, which is a new favorite of mine. Unable to do her usual press tour and live performances, she opted for a completely virtual one with her band, backup singers and dancers. It actually was quite enjoyable to watch!

5 New Albums We’re Listening To

As much as possible, I want to try and keep some kind of normalcy during this quarantine. Sundays are my days for unwinding so that usually means being in my lounge wear, running errands, getting ready for the week, catching up on new music and television shows. Aside from running errands, we can do almost all of that. I’m also aware that having more time now, I’m able to create new routines for myself. I can spend more time on making a Sunday dinner that will set me up for the week once we return to work. Hopefully that’s not too ambitious!

In the last week five new albums came out that I was anticipating. Technically The Weeknd was the week before, but whatever. Dua Lipa’s album was released a couple weeks early due to it being leaked. I saw that she was upset at the news, but on the upside, it’s truly a bop and one of my new favorites.

If you’re looking for some new music to fill your time, here is what I’m listening to:

  • The Weeknd – After Hours
  • Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia
  • PARTYNEXTDOOR – PARTYMOBILE
  • Jessie Reyez – BEFORE LOVE CAME TO KILL US
  • Little Dragon – New Me, Same Us

Cover of the Day

It’s Hayley Williams appreciation week for us! I had heard that she had done a cover of “Don’t Start Now” – one of my favorite Dua Lipa songs, but only heard it for the first time tonight. I love the way she decided to arrange this song. If I had heard her rendition for the first time without ever having heard the original, I think I would be just as obsessed with it.

All that aside, it’s no secret that I’m excited for Hayley’s comeback. This cover on top of everything she has built her career upon proves how incredible she is. Her sound isn’t necessarily new for her. Instead, it has evolved. She has always been the front woman and had the support of her band, but now she gets to do it all on her own. We can’t get enough of this cover.

Grammy Awards 2020 Red Carpet

Lizzo wearing Atelier Versace

It’s bittersweet to be watching the red carpet this evening. With the news of Kobe and his daughter’s passing, it’s not surprising that celebrities want to get across the carpet without doing any interviews. Still, as everyone has been saying ‘the show must go on’ and while difficult, it’s turning out to be pretty great so far. Tonight, we’re highlighting look and tomorrow we’ll share our favorite performances including the tribute to Kobe.

2019 American Music Awards Performances

I know that paying for cable is something most people don’t do these days, but I love watching award show performances live! I’m sharing a few of my favorites from yesterday evening because we all know they’ll be taken down soon enough. Naturally, Camila and Shawn steal the whole freakin’ show. And even though we’ve all seen disgustingly make out, they still continue to tease us in performances.

And unfortunately, I can’t find the Taylor medley.
