Zendaya for GQ

Zendaya is our woman to watch in 2021 and beyond. This year, she has a highly anticipated film slated to come out, has been on numerous best dressed lists (even in a pandemic) and will return as the lead to her HBO series, Euphoria. She may have gotten her start on Disney Channel, but she’s not a Disney actress anymore. Her recent work has proven that. This February, she’s on the cover of GQ and this photoshoot highlights her duality both in front of the camera and off.

The pandemic has caused all of us to re-evaluate our lives and while many of us were embracing rest time, Zendaya sought out work. Malcolm & Marie was one of the few films that were shot early on in the pandemic slated for release on Netflix. Rumor has it that it will make her a contender for Best Actress.

Hong Jang Hyun

Before BTS came into my life, we’ve always profiled photographers that we’ve been impressed with. The “Dynamite” era proved to be successful for the group and with that came a wave of western press. For months, this left with me a lot of questions. Before I became a fan, were they always getting this much press attention? Why don’t American artists and bands have nearly the same amount of press the way they do? I read every cover story: Variety, Wall Street Journal, and Esquire – all released back to back with each other. Each piece had a different voice and focus because obviously – three different outlets here. The ones I didn’t love as much were the pieces that continued to compare them to The Beatles. Enough, already. The one I loved most was [Esquire]. Dave Holmes had clearly done his research on the group and allowed each member to bring more depth and vulnerability to the piece in a way we haven’t seen before.

After reading each piece, I never returned to the content, but what I came back to more than once was the photos. It’s no secret that, by now, the guys are outfitted in the best looks for these types of shoots. Who can forget the Dior era they had on stage even? But it’s not just about the fashion here. Why do they look like they’ve been modeling for years? Are these the same guys I watched wood carving and singing karaoke from “In the Soop?” Each of these cover stories had one thing in common, photographer, [Hong Jang Hyun].

A quick search leads me to [Hong Jang Hyun’s] Instagram page, a very well known fashion photographer. His range of work spans editorials, collections, and advertisements. In addition to BTS, he has photographed some of my favorite Korean celebrities. Song Hye Kyo, Park Bo Gum, and Park Seo-Joon have all worked with him. Even though these pieces have been out for some time, I keep going back to the photographs – something I rarely do for anyone else.

A few favorites:

There’s a theme here as we follow the guys through this promotional process for “Dynamite” and their new album “BE.” But let’s also not forget that Hong Jang Hyun can do this with BTS too:

When I read pieces, I often leave thinking only about the content and the photos as an afterthought. Hong Jang Hyun’s work leaves me feeling the complete opposite. As someone who wrote for their high school newspaper and yearbook, this concept of these two things supporting each other should have been more important to me back then. I don’t know how many more pieces BTS will have through the end of the year, but we secretly hope that Hong Jang Hyun will continue capturing them every time.

BLACKPINK x Elle

With a new album and a Netflix documentary out next month, BLACKPINK is building up their fans to get hyped over their new releases. This week, they are on the cover of Elle Magazine. It’s major news considering that they are the hottest girl group out right now and on a US cover. Since the ladies have always been known for their style, this photo shoot is no different. The visuals are absolutely stunning. In addition to photos below the cut, we also included a fun “Song Association” they did with Elle!

Selena Gomez x Allure

While the pandemic has proven to be much more challenging on all of our lives, it’s amazing to see how people persevere when they don’t always have their normal resources. For one, editorials and magazine shoots are at is most innovative. In the latest issue of Allure, Selena Gomez is responsible for all of her own makeup. It doesn’t hurt that she’s also promoting her new cosmetics line, Rare Beauty, so she’s no rookie here. Given the circumstances, everything is getting done with a smaller team and smaller production. It just goes to show what we can accomplish when we’re constrained! We love this entire look though. For the full interview, you can read the cover story at [Allure].

This is my favorite shot.

Dr. Anthony Fauci for InStyle

Try to find a better cover for 2020, honestly. This cover is truly “a flex” and we’re here for it. On day 23498734 of this year (a dramatization) he is essentially the only person in this country that can save us all. How is it that the administration doesn’t seem to listen to him and is building their own takedown? I don’t have answers. No one understand this.

For the full interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci and his wife Dr. Christine Grady, a bioethicist, click [here]. Even as I’m writing this, I still truly cannot get over how awesome this cover is.

Gabrielle Union | Self

Editorials and cover shoots in the times of COVID are wild aren’t they? When this all first started, I don’t think anyone really knew how these would resume, but sure enough and a couple months later, we’re here. I have been loving seeing how celebrities and models are getting creative, but this one of Gabrielle Union for Self takes the cake. If we all didn’t know that this was during quarantine, we’d think it was a typical cover shoot. The best part of this, however, is that all of the photos were shot by her 13-year old step daughter Zaya. For the entire cover story, read [here] We’ve loved Gabrielle since her days on 10 Things I Hate About You and Bring It On, but these days she’s shining even more as a role model.

Zoe Kravitz for Elle

We haven’t shared a cover shoot in some time, but we would if everything Zoe was wearing in it was stunning. We’d like to see more of this in 2020 and more of Zoe in films and television.

This dress is amazing; we need it.

Brie Larson x Stylist

We’ve basically just adored Brie Larson since she starred on “Raising Dad.” She has since blown up and is now, the first solo-female superhero to be in a Marvel film as Captain Marvel! The film was just realized on Friday (International Women’s Day) no less and is slated to kill it at the box office. In the past, we’ve shared a lot about Brie’s Red Carpet looks. Of course, her presence in the film industry goes far beyond that. She’s extremely talented, a role model to many, and an example for all of us as exemplified by this Stylist interview.

If you’ve got some time, take a read! It’s a fast one, but well worth it.

Justin and Hailey Bieber x Vogue

Like the rest of the world, I was completely shocked when this cover story came out. It’s no secret that Justin and Hailey have been together for some time now so this wasn’t breaking news. How they ended up together after a whirlwind romance though was. It felt like we were in this ongoing back and forth between Justin and Selena for years. Then out of nowhere, Hailey swooped in to become his wife. While their romance seemed fast, they’ve actually known each other for years. To be honest, we don’t know that much about her. She isn’t quite the media star that we know other celebrities to be. And while she does come from a famous family, Hailey is quite elusive. It has actually served her well! It makes us think that there must be something pretty special about her if she can tame down a firecracker like Justin.

The cover and shoot is shot by famous photographer Annie Leibovitz and highlights what life with the Biebers are really like. I found their photoshoot to be quite endearing actually.

Is it just me or does this photo feel a little bit out of place than the rest? It’s candid sure, but not the best of the both of them.

Kendall Jenner x Elle

While it’s always hard for me to find time to write on Yow Yow! it is very much my mental break away from work. With the migration that happened recently, I had a chance to go back and look at some of my posts over the nine years. There’s so much content here that it blows my mind sometimes. And then I wonder how I had so much time back then while being a full time student. I love the years where I was in college and writing anything and everything without a care. After I was done with school, I wanted to be more thoughtful with my writing and even with those that I was speaking with. The interview series were my favorite.

We’re posting this Kendall Jenner editorial for Elle Magazine because I have really longed for a good editorial for quite some time. The career I have now couldn’t be farther from fashion, but that’s what still excites us today. It’s still the same thing that I loved back in 2010. To read the feature and interview, click here. For the rest of the photos, just click under the cut for more!
