Deck the Hall Ball 2011 Recap

King Mark Foster would like to welcome you into this extravagant holiday concert post. [For some REAL photos from the event, check out Dave Lichterman’s work here.]

Lineup:

  • Grouplove
  • Two Door Cinema Club
  • Young the Giant
  • Foster the People
  • Cage the Elephant
  • Death Cab For Cutie
  • Mumford & Sons

Year after year, I have always dismissed radio station sponsored concerts, but this year, I made an exception. As soon as I saw the lineup for the first four bands (without the headliners being announced,) I was all in. Two Door and Foster are bands that I have been wanting to see for a very long time and Young the Giant and Grouplove are bands that are quickly on the rise. The concert started promptly at 4PM and didn’t end until what I imagine was probably 11PM. I left two songs into Mumford & Sons, but before you bite my head off about that – allow me to explain later on. Kevin and I had pretty decent seats, which I was grateful for cause I get claustrophobic in general admission. Overall, it was definitely an experience for me and one that I will never forget.

[The view from our seats]

From the event, I learned a few things. The first – in regards to bands – is that the set list is crucial. Young the Giant kicked off their set with my favorite song, “Apartment,” but probably could have got the crowd going more with “My Body,” or a song similar to that since most bands wouldn’t start with their hit single. If you don’t start off with a strong song, you can introduce yourselves with a unique intro. Grouplove entered the stage to a Kanye song and right away, everyone was like, “Who is this band?” These days, I’m a really strange concert attendee because of my Blackberry note taking. I mean – it’s meant for posts like these! At shows, I find it hard to enjoy it completely because aside from singing along to songs and dancing to them, I’m constantly fixated on the band – how they perform, the mechanics of it all, their movement, their interaction with the crowd.

Foster the People – Broken Jaw

So I was supposed to write two very important posts today, but I’ve never been so unproductive! One Tree Hill on the Soap Network ruins me.

On another note, this song never made it onto Torches, but watching Mark Foster perform this song last night was absolutely amazing. His vocals, his energy, the dancing….it’s a sight to see. The audio doesn’t do this song or performance justice.

Grammy Nominations Dominated By The Indie Sound

Photo cred. emcBlue

Since I’ve been swamped all week with finals work, Max filled me in at lunch today about how some of our favorite bands are up for Grammy nominations this year! You would think that this might irk me a little bit because this would mean that my favorite music is becoming more mainstream if it is being recognized by an award show like this, but strangely I feel the opposite. Do you know how long it has taken for indie music to get to this point? For as long as I’ve known, they have always been shoved into another category – that maybe they just weren’t good enough or something, but now they are up against mainstream acts like Katy Perry, Adele, and Maroon 5. It’s going to be a tough fight, but I’ve got hope for them.

Congratulations to: Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons, Foster the People and the rest of the Grammy nominees.

Foster the People – Call It What You Want

The new music video for one of my favorite Foster songs was released today so here it is!

This is pretty much the only post you’re getting today cause I’m studying for two midterms. For tomorrow. So make it last!

WHOA Bonus Song of the Day

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/30650127]

Not like it’s new or anything…

I’ve been giving off very mixed signals to all of you in the last couple of weeks regarding my feelings for Foster the People and I kind of owe you an apology. I do not hate Foster the People. Unfortunately, I’m somewhat of a music snob. [whoa. vulnerability.] And it’s just one of those things that can’t be helped (not that I’ve actually tried to quit – let’s be real.) I’m sort of like that kid in pre-school that doesn’t want to share my special toy, but I’ll share my snack instead? I’m fine with sharing some music with you all, but Foster the People was kind of like that special toy that I just wanted to hold onto forever. Well, that definitely didn’t happen.

But for the record, I don’t hate this group. The truth is I adore this group with every fiber of my being. I will dance around and sing at the top of my lungs along with “Call It What You Want” and Torches is my favorite album of the year. I would probably weep silently  if I ever got the chance to see them live.

There. I said it.

Has Foster the People Taken Over the World Yet?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNlFVysGj2Y]

I need to be very careful with my wording because the last time I wrote about this band, I got made fun of by a friend of mine who called me out on sounding too much like a pretentious hipster.

Anyways, I caught their performance on SNL last night and found it to be kind of amusing. If you’ve ever seen them perform (which I’ve only seen on TV and stream) then you’ll notice just how goofy these guys really look when they are performing. Lead singer Mark Foster is just a gangly little thing, but at the same time I feel like I have to give this band some praise because they are quite possibly the most hipster band out right now and have managed to make even the non-hipsters fall in love with them. I think many of their fans just don’t realize it though.

Found this cover video today of Pumped Up Kicks (WHOA big surprise!)  made by three contestants of the Glee Project and AJ Rafael and loved it. I think this friendship is fairly recent, but I find it to be kind of awesome because… it’s the Glee Project kids and also…Cameron Mitchell swoon swoooooon.
