2021 Critics Choice Awards

Zendaya in Valentino Haute Couture

The awards show last night was a bit overshadowed by the Oprah interview with formal royals so unfortunately I didn’t get to watch any part of it. I will say, however, that this was the first look that I saw and the photograph that let me know these two events were happening the same night. I knew from the start that this was going to be my favorite look and sure enough as I prepared to write this post, it was the first look at the top of my source.

Typically, we’d be introduced to all of these looks via the red carpet, but I actually am loving this new format. It’s very cool to see these in portrait style and seeing how celebrities are highlighting their looks with different backdrops. This might be something I want to stay post-pandemic.

Golden Globes 2021

Lily Collins in Saint Laurent

As painful as it was to sit through the awkwardness of the Golden Globes yesterday evening, I’m still supportive that it even happened at all. How is it possible that in a year where we had all the time to watch these films and television series that it feels like we barely scratched the surface? Yesterday’s award show felt like an extension of my work day which made it hard to watch, but I’d sit through it all over again to celebrate the wins of “Minari,” Chloe Zhao and Chadwicke Boseman.

A red carpet wasn’t going to be like every other year, but I actually quite enjoyed everyone’s take on their own photoshoot. Here are a collection of looks and some of our favorites:

(Side note: I actually really loved Lily’s look, but it just missed the cut off in my top 5)

2020 Oscars After Parties

Hailey Bieber in Versace

I might be in a minority camp here, but I honestly love the after party looks way more than the main event itself. Why, do you ask? Have you seen the looks that show up after the award show ends for the night? Every celebrity comes out and it’s a much bigger pool when you include those that aren’t nominated. Even those that were at the actual award show will come donning a second look. Plus, because the after party isn’t necessarily televised everything is just a little bit more sheer and with a little less fabric. These looks are fun, sexy, and ones that we all wish we could pull off.

Trust me when I tell you that everyone was here and we wanted to capture everything in this post, but because of the volume it was slowing down the loading of creating this.

Oscars 2020 Red Carpet

Regina King in Versace

It’s the last award show of the season! This year more than ever, it felt like it has flown by. I’m really excited to share these looks this evening though because we always expect to save the best for last. If I’m being honest, this last award show coinciding with the start of Fashion Week has felt like a lot. We’re a little bit “fashioned” out over here, but it just means that we won’t be returning back to this season again for a whole ‘nother year. Let’s make it a good one and end on a solid note.

2018 Oscars Red Carpet

Allison Janney in Reem Acra

We made it to the end of award show season! With the way things started last winter and with every single allegation that came up, I was afraid that it was going to put a damper on all of the events. Instead it did the opposite. Sure, it raised awareness, but even more so, it was great to see those using their acceptance speech for something much bigger.

Critics’ Choice Awards 2018

Gal Gadot in Prada

It is only just the beginning for award show season, but doesn’t it feel like we’re moving fast already? As much as we loved the classic black attire for last week’s Golden Globes, this week’s Critics’ Choice Awards is welcoming us back with more color in our lives. We don’t have many looks to share, but the ones we are sharing are ones we love!

2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Normally, I start this post as soon as the awards show ends, but I knew that this year was going to take a little bit longer. In fact, I cleared the entire rest of my night to write this post because I wanted to take extra care of it. I also didn’t want to fuck this up. Before we get into what everyone wore, I want to say how difficult it is to write this post. Everyone. EVERYONE was extremely beautiful and elegant and this year, it wasn’t about the gowns at all because the color black symbolized something more. It was a movement of women who stood together supporting each other against sexual harassment, sexual assault, gender inequality, unequal pay for women, and so much more. Why is this list even as long as it is? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? We’re also not focusing on significant others and dates to the awards show because this year many actresses chose to bring along with them activists and strong women in this world who are leading these efforts everywhere.

This time around, we’re going to do things a little bit differently. What will stay the same – the photos and the designer. But I’m keeping my critiques to myself because I just don’t think that on a night like this and an award show as amazing as this one was this evening, that we need any more criticism towards women and how they are dressed. And maybe we’ll choose to continue to do it this way from now on.

What I’m really excited to focus on in this post is how these stylists and actresses rose up to the challenge of wearing these black gowns and making it their own. They added pops of color, accessorized, and emphasized their hair and makeup instead of letting the gowns speak entirely for them. Except in a way, they did – powerfully. It will be hard to select my favorites, which I’ll share on my Instagram Stories later on this evening.

And while this evening was moving and inspiring, it’s a reminder to me that there’s still a lot of work to do. That there are men in that audience that are not supporters and instead abusers that have not been called out yet. That while we shifted the focus on the red carpet to not ask about who they were wearing, reporters were not asking enough men about what they were going to do to support the #TimesUp movement or how they felt about it. Very few wore anything, but black on the red carpet, but is this the same “fall-in-line” culture just repeating itself again? Also, wearing a uniform black dress doesn’t solve the problem(s). In high school, these sort of things were just called spirit days. (sorry was that harsh)

There’s a lot to unpack probably in the coming months, but we don’t gotta do that tonight…

Favorites of 2017

For once, I’m feeling very on top of my end-of-the-year round up posts. Normally, you would see some of these after the new year, but I guess you can thank the Seattle snow for keeping us indoors these last few days and unlimited downtime. Of course, I’m not mad at it because during the rest of the year, we never get this time to sit down and just write.

Favorite Style Icon: Margot Robbie

Is anyone as excited as I am to see I, Tonya?! I still remember watching the teaser trailer like it was yesterday and while I don’t see movies in theaters often, I’m willing to break my rule for this one. Margot Robbie has been on my list of style icons to watch for some time, but it was this year that I started to notice that outfit after outfit, she was consistently nailing it. Whether it’s getting glammed up for the red carpet or dressing down, Margot’s accessories and beauty look are always a perfect match. With the upcoming award season, we can’t wait to see what she does next.

Runner Up: Gal Gadot

Favorite Getaway: Pescadero / Half Moon Bay

It may have only been a day trip for me, but it was definitely one of my most unforgettable memories from the year. After leaving my job and not having too much time in between to start my new one, it didn’t make sense to come back home or plan an extravagant getaway. The good thing about California though is that there are no shortage of destinations to venture out to even in one day. I picked what I thought to be very quaint and cute, but maybe not a huge tourist attraction, found a friend that was in the same boat as I was and we took off! It was a random weekday and so quiet out on the road, but exactly what we needed. It was so fun to just go to the beach and explore this land that no one was at. It was the most calm and serene that I had felt in the last few months and I knew after that day that we had made a good decision about the trip.

Runner Up: Disneyland

Favorite artist of the year: SZA

Wow, was this a tough decision to make. If I could have had two tied for first place, it would have been SZA and Khalid! But I had to make a choice and the reason why I picked SZA was because I felt her music was so much more relatable to what I was going through this year. 2017 was entirely a year for me and focused on me and listening to her in a weird way made me feel like I could do anything. I owned my mistakes, my flaws, made decisions on a whim, drove away from my comfort zone and never looked back. She’s amazing.

Runner Up: Khalid

Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Siesta Key

You know a show is special when you and your coworker make a whole Instagram Live dedicated to it. Siesta Key was the standout reality series of the year for me. The commercials and trailers penned it as your next generation Laguna Beach, but it is so much more than that. I could talk about this show for hours, but instead of doing that I will just say that the show returns to MTV on January 15th so you should use your time now to get caught up on season 1.

Runner Up: Riverdale

Favorite item purchased this year:

If I could have a wardrobe that only came from Aritzia, I would never be unhappy. I wasn’t expecting to find this dress when I stepped into the store that day. In fact, I was on the hunt for a Teddy Jacket over at Uniqlo and when I didn’t find it, I stopped into Aritzia for lightening round shopping fest. This dress was one of the first pieces that caught my eye and right away I knew I had to try it on. I didn’t even have an event to wear it to if I had bought it (luckily that came later!) but I knew I had to have it. It fit me in all of the right places and was so elegant and beautiful. The great thing about a classic LBD is that there is always going to be an occasion to wear it to. I look forward to keeping this in my closet forever ever.

Runner Up: Gap Denim Jacket

Favorite albums (in no particular order):

  1. Kehlani – SweetSexySavage
  2. Khalid – American Teen
  3. Dua Lipa – Self Titled
  4. SZA – Ctrl
  5. Calvin Harris – Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
  6. Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me
  7. ODESZA – A Moment Apart
  8. Kelela – Take Me Apart
  9. Shawn Mendes – Illuminate
  10. H.E.R. – Self Titled

Favorite Online Past Time: Twitter

When I hate you, but I actually love you. I hate that it was the political turmoil that brought me even closer to Twitter in the last year, but it’s completely true. It’s a large source for my news, but it’s also one of the platforms that can make me laugh consistently. Who knew 180 characters could do that for you… or … however, many characters they allow now? I wish I could say that I was refined and listened to podcasts on my commute, but no, I’m the girl in the backseat of my Uber and Lyft furiously scrolling through my feed to see how much I can get through before I’m dropped off at my local Starbucks.

Runner Up: HQ, Instagram, what else?
