Homegrown in the Bay Area

It’s only a matter of time until all my Seattle favorites come to me here in the Bay Area! Many people envy me living in the South Bay, to only go home and search for South Bay estate agents. Many people move here through Palos Verdes realtor Maureen Megowan. Finding out that my favorite Seattle sandwich shop, Homegrown, was making it’s mark here was the biggest surprise that I learned of this month. They are not only opening just one location, but three. That feels major to me. One of the things that I love about Homegrown is how sustainable they are. They use fresh ingredients and all of their sandwiches are yummy. In case you’re wondering what my favorite is though, it’s the classic Turkey, Bacon, Avocado. It’s almost midnight and I’ve been feeling like I needed a snack an hour ago so this is not a great time to be writing this post.

You can find the first location of Homegrown in the city on 222 Battery St. (already open!) The next two locations will be in Danville and Lafayette. Those aren’t exactly that much closer to me, but we may just make the trek for it. If only they would consider a South Bay location…

The Best Time to Visit Seattle

It’s actually been a few weeks since I returned from my trip back home! It almost feels a bit outdated to write this post now, but then I remembered that I couldn’t not share all of the photos of everything that I ate while I was in Seattle. It just seemed like the wrong thing to do. Even though I’m calling the Bay Area home now, Seattle is never that far away and I don’t take advantage of the short flight as much as I should. It can be challenging because I have times at work where I should be in the office and not on vacation, but luckily for me the summertime is not that time. And that time also happens to me when Seattle is the hottest and the brightest! I decided to go back for Father’s Day and a few days extra which ended up being the right amount.

Before I even landed in Seattle, I had one request and that was for Kevin to pick me up at the airport (okay a 2nd request) and take me straight to Wasabi Bistro. I didn’t get to go here when I was in town during the holidays and it was the only thing that I wanted because no offense – California can’t even match up to Seattle when it comes to sushi and seafood. We were all thinking it. Also, I had sushi three times when I was home, so there.

Homegrown Expansion

photo cred | Food Spotting

One of my favorite Seattle sandwich shops is making its way downtown! Homegrown currently has locations in Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, and Fremont, but by the end of this summer you can also snag a sandwich from them on 2nd and Marion – right across the street from the Metropolitan Grill in the Wells Fargo Building. The shop will house 17 counter seats and 20 outdoor seats for gorgeous days like today!

Seattle’s Best Restaurants 2012

It’s no secret at all that Seattle is one of the top food cities in the country. Hello – Top Chef’s newest season was filmed here and I can’t wait to see all of my favorite spots featured. Today, Seattle Met Magazine published their picks for the best restaurants in Seattle for the year of 2012.

Shoutouts to my favorites:

  • Homegrown
  • Skillet Diner
  • Dick’s Drive In
  • Artusi

Clearly, I’ve got a new list of restaurants that I need to hit up though. Goal for 2013? Check out the full list here and grab a tissue for the drooling that’s about to happen

Currently Craving:

Today felt like a very chill summer day and all I could think of was how badly I wanted a HomeGrown Turkey and Avocado sandwich. UHHH this stuff is so good and incomparable to my poor college student meal of Cup Noodles right now.

Favorite Capitol Hill Restaurants of 2011!

This year, Capitol Hill was booming with new restaurants! I’ve sampled many of them throughout the year and in my time living in Capitol Hill, but there are still so many that I haven’t tried. It also doesn’t help that there will be a handful of new places opening this January. In this post, you’ll learn about both my new and old favorites! Keep in mind though that this is not a “best of” post. I am in no way claiming that these restaurants are the best in their category, but these are the ones that I enjoy and they’re the ones that I take my friends to. With that, let’s get started?

Favorite Fish & Chips: Pike Street Fish Fry

Pike Street Fish Fry has been across the street from my school for quite some time, but for some reason, I have always overlooked it. It’s probably cause I thought Neumos, Moe Bar, and Pike Street Fish Fry all merged into one and never gave it a second look. Over the summer, Lisa and I came up with this idea that we would have our lunch break at a different restaurant once a week. Now looking back on it, I think we only did this once and Pike Street Fish Fry was the only place we ever went to, but what a  great choice it was anyways! Fish and chips were a common staple for me growing up since I was obsessed with Ivars and Skippers, which means I’m pretty particular about eating it anywhere else. Pike Street Fish Fry is incredibly greasy, but deliciously greasy in the best way possible. That’s like a descriptive heart attack, but trust – if everyone else on the hill and on Yelp says it’s the place you need to try, then you just have to.

*Every third Friday, the restaurant offers free fresh cut frys from 5 – 7PM.

What I order: Catfish or Cod and chips

Summer in Seattle: Homegrown

A couple years ago, Jeanette and I had a “Seattle Day” in which we ventured to various neighborhoods and spots  in the area for a day of dining, thrifting, and acting like tourists. Along the way, we found ourselves in Fremont and hungry. Not too familiar with the area back then, we decided to walk around until we found something that would fit our mood. Homegrown was a cute little restaurant that we had both never been to before so it seemed like the perfect choice for us. Also, we had come to the conclusion that sandwiches were totally a lunch meal.

The sustainable sandwich shop utilizes ingredients that are organic, local, and all-natural. In addition to sandwiches, they also make soups, salads, and some of the best potato chips I’ve ever had. Since then, Homegrown has always been “our” spot and we’ve made it a tradition to eat there at least once a year – although I wish it was more!

Last week, instead of going to the Fremont location, we went to their shop on Capitol Hill which is nestled in Melrose Market, another place that I was just visiting for the first time. I ordered the classic “Turkey, Bacon, and Avocado” – my go-to favorite! I don’t think I’ve ever consumed a sandwich that fast. Well, dearest Jeanette is leaving me for London in just a few days so it looks like we won’t be able to make another stop there anytime soon, but I’m not sure I can wait for her for several months to go again! Here’s hoping that I can stay a good friend.

Visit Homegrown online here or visit them for reals at their shops in Fremont, Capitol Hill, and Queen Anne.
