This Weekend:

It has become the norm that I find myself doing an endless list of chores and errands on the weekends now. What is it even like to be outdoors for a long period of time and be social? I don’t know anymore! Luckily for us, there are a few things to keep us busy. I’ve found a way to have things to look forward to even in this pandemic election time mess.

What We’re Watching: PEN15 Season 2

A new season of PEN15 has arrived on Hulu! Never have I ever felt so uncomfortable and awkward watching a series, but have also found such joy. PEN15 is so cringe because it reminds us of the strange pre-teen/teenage years we all thought we left behind. Having it resurface is a bit of a trigger, but the two leads (and writers!) of the show, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle do a phenomenal job of depicting this. It has been some time in between seasons so I’m hoping I can savor it as opposed to watching it all in one weekend.

What We’re Listening To: Dynamite (NightTime version) by BTS

We’re now listening to “Dynamite” on a daily basis, but because they’ve remixed this single so many times, I can listen to about eight different versions of it. Every day could be a different remix. I’ve never heard of a nighttime remix before, but the versions on this (there are 5!) are much more laid back and chill than the original versions or even the daytime remix. Pick the one that reflects your mood!

What We’re Wearing: [Zella Girl Supersoft Side Tie Hoodie] – $39

I bought this from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale on discount and even though I’ve had this for a month, it’s the first time I’m wearing it today! We’re not spending much time out today, but it’s the perfect cozy piece for home, lounging around, or over your activewear. Even if times were normal, I would wear this out to a brunch or daily errands.

What We’re Eating: Dim Sum

One of my favorite weekend traditions growing up was going out for dim sum with my family. With everything going on, I can’t remember having it since even before the pandemic. Luckily, we’re picking up all of my favorites today to go. It may not be exactly the same experience, but we’ll take it! Here’s hoping that everything returns to normal soon so that we can continue moving forward with all of the things we want to do in a safe and healthy way.

A Guide to K-Dramas

I recently started doing quick guides on various topics for Instagram, but there’s only so much text that you can fit into one box. Some themes just require more explanation! Since quarantine began, I’ve been going deep into the rabbit hole of K-dramas. For starters, it’s never been a genre I thought I would be remotely interested in. However, other friends of mine wondered what took me so long. All it took was a little extra time on my hands and of course, a soft spot for a good romance story.

Crash Landing on You – 16 Episodes – (Netflix)

You never forget your first. I started watching Crash Landing on You without ever knowing the synopsis of the story or that it was one of the highest rated dramas in Korea ever. The plot follows a South Korean heiress who accidentally lands in North Korea while paragliding. Upon landing in the trees, she runs into an army officer who should turn her in, but helps her hide. I call Crash Landing on You the gateway drama. There’s something for everyone whether it’s action, comedy, romance, or a thriller. It has an all-star ensemble of a cast, but I’ll admit when I watched it the first time, I got turned around trying to remember who everyone was. This drama will forever hold a special place in my heart and has produced the most tears.

Hulu Cancels “High Fidelity”

Announcing their renewals and cancellations this week, Hulu has decided to cut “High Fidelity.” This wasn’t a show that was highly publicized, but it was worth watching. Somewhere in the middle of quarantine, I finished “High Fidelity” in two days and was sure that they’d be picked up for a second season. Not knowing how “Rob’s” story will continue is deeply disappointing. At times, I will admit, Rob was frustrating. She was our best friend that couldn’t get her life together and at times, she was us who was truly a mess. Her story, nonetheless, was beautiful. In my list of things watched in quarantine, “High Fidelity” had the best soundtrack of all.

The news of the cancellation is quite confusing in itself. “High Fidelity” received rave reviews and Zoe Kravitz as the lead was incredibly relatable. On top of that, she was one of the executive producers on the show. In today’s climate where everyone is calling for more diversity in television, the cancellation feels likes the wrong move. Even if “High Fidelity” were to switch to another network or streaming platform, the chances would be low. We’re not sure why that is given Zoe Kravitz is tied to it and the show already has a fanbase. For now, we’ll be crossing our fingers that it can be saved!

Pen15 Season 2 Trailer

https://youtu.be/oFAHiU0g0xQ

Despite entertainment studios being on pause right now due to COVID-19, it doesn’t feel like there’s a shortage in things to watch. We’ve had five months of this and I haven’t run out of movies and television shows. In fact, new things are being added to my list all the time. The one thing that has changed is that I don’t forget when things are premiering now because I mark it down somewhere. That is essentially how much time we have.

One series that I’m looking forward to returning this fall is PEN15. In my opinion, there isn’t another show quite like it. Actresses Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play younger versions of themselves from middle school and it is as uncomfortable and awkward as you would imagine. They may be surrounded by younger actors and dressed up in pre-teen clothing, but at the end of the day they still remind me of adult me! The first half of season two (7 episodes) premieres on Hulu September 17th.

Normal People Isn’t Over Yet

When “Normal People” was released on Hulu, fans of the series binged it all in a matter of days. Personally, I found myself in stages of grief. Should I have finished it as quickly as I did? Why didn’t I savor it more? Wanting to know more about Marianne and Connell, I couldn’t accept that this was the end.

Announced this week, two very special episodes will be available for Ireland and Northern Ireland viewers that show us the rest of the story 40 years into the future. Titled “Normal Older People,” we really hope that there’s a happy ending in it and that all viewers will have it available on Hulu.

UPDATE:

Okay, we found two clips, but this isn’t exactly what we expected.

This Weekend:

It has been a month since we last did an update on this so I figured it might be nice to do a short little roundup of what we’re up to. We are now almost two months into quarantine and getting better at figuring out our rhythm.

What we’re watching: Normal People (Hulu)

Technically I finished this right before the weekend. Normal People was released earlier this week and with 30 minute episodes, the series flies by. We wrapped everything up in the span of two days. Now, I was looking forward to the release especially with the build up leading up to the premiere, but I hadn’t read the book itself. After watching the first episode, it was so easy to get swept up in the young love story of Marianne and Connell. In previous lives, we might have written off a story like this where a shy loner girl ends up with a popular jock, but this one is different and you’ll know it when you see it.

What We’re Wearing: [TAVIK Swimwear Louise Romper – $85]

Okay, so we’re starting to get a little bit creative with our loungewear in quarantine. I had purchase this piece specifically for my Phuket trip, but we didn’t get a whole lot of wear out of it while we were there. Since I want to prioritize being functional and comfortable while working at home, I decided to pull this out of my closet earlier this week. It also feel appropriate as the temperatures are starting to rise once again in the Bay Area as we inch towards summer.

What We’re Listening To: JoJo – good to know (Album)

There hasn’t been a shortage of new releases during this time and I am here for it. Actually for the first time, I’m able to not fall behind in new singles and albums. We’ve been waiting for JoJo’s comeback for some time now and I’m looking forward to listening to “Good to Know” over the span of this weekend. I was already a fan of her released single “Man” so I have no doubts that I won’t feel the same about the rest of her eight songs on the album.

What We’re Cooking: [Ramen Peanut Noodles]

I’ve been putting off this recipe for some time now and I’m not sure why given how simple it is! I’ve unfortunately had to toss two onions in this time that have gone bad because I haven’t made this recipe and that kills me. I’m not a very elaborate chef in the kitchen, but I’m great at making some quick and simple recipes. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally got my hands on some ramen from a Hawaiian market and now those possibilities are endless. My ramen game has increased 10 points, but I can also forgo ramen one night and making a stir fry like this above.

Hillary (trailer) – Hulu

The 2016 campaign seems like ages ago. Can you believe that we made it through nearly all of Trump’s term? I can’t. In this new documentary by Hulu, we get to see an exclusive interview with Hillary herself, but also some behind the scenes of her campaign that were never shown. I never thought of Hulu as being the place where I’d want to watch more documentaries from, but I’m slightly curious about it since the whole Fyre Festival thing of last year. Readers, will you be watching this?

What We’re Watching This Weekend: Ramy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Ek09B9YaY

I can’t even begin to tell you how relaxing this 4-day weekend has been for me. On top of that, I still have one more day! At the start of this week, I felt a bit of FOMO knowing that most of my friends would be out of town and that I would spend a pretty quiet long weekend at home. What it reminded me of was how a year ago, I kind of already did this. The only difference was that I had a month off. I committed this weekend to catching up on shows, running adult errands, and non-stop writing and content building. It turned out to be exactly what I needed.

Ramy (Hulu) was a show that had been on my list since April. I kept hearing about it sporadically and then decided to go for it on the 4th. The show follows Ramy – a 20-something Muslim man who is trying to figure out his life and identify. His life is a series of things he can’t get right: losing his job, dating, Ramadan, etc. The show also centers around those in his life as well, his sister who is a good daughter and listens to everything her parents say and his mother who out of loneliness becomes a Lyft driver.

Each episode is 30 minutes long and flies by. I couldn’t get enough, but didn’t want to binge the show in one sitting so I tossed in his HBO comedy special while I was at it. Ramy has already been picked up for a second season and I’m looking forward to it!
