The Closet: February 2021

[Comme Si La Boxer Classica, Silk] – $198

This Closet post is looking a bit lighter than usual, but that’s mostly because we did a major haul shortly after Christmas. We’ve simply run out of things we thought we needed so naturally this post is a reach in that all these things are wants, but not necessities. Can you tell that we’re itching for spring already? Most of these pieces fall within the neutral color family and while that is mainly our aesthetic these days, we can’t help ourselves.

IKEA’s Clothing Collection

If you told me the college version of me that IKEA would one day excel beyond affordable furniture, I wouldn’t believe you. But they proved that point almost immediately when I tried their meatballs during my first visit. Now, IKEA is getting into the fashion game, and honestly, we don’t hate it. The above photo is a glimpse into what we can expect from the line and I have to admit that the plain white tee with a bar code across it is calling out to me.

The capsule collection titled, “EFTERTRADA” will include both separates and accessories and will first launch in IKEA’s Tokyo store. Available merch will include hoodies, tees, umbrellas, water bottles, towels, and tote bags. Items are available for pre-sale beginning July 31st from [IKEA’s Japan website].

Sleepover @ IKEA for the Night

For one night only, IKEA is letting you live out that scene from 500 Days of Summer on August 31, 2014. In a partnership with Airbnb, IKEA is letting the families of three winners stay overnight at their store in Tempe, Sydney. The store has decked out three promotional rooms for this event and while we don’t have any photographs, we know it’s something that most would be thrilled to have the chance at doing. The three themes? Rustic charm, inner city living and modern elegance. So how much does it cost to stay in one of these rooms? 12 Australian dollars.

“Airbnb gives people access to the most unique listings around the world from treehouses to yurts to villas, and now we’re adding Ikea to the list,” Eva Ross, Local Operations Lead at Airbnb Australia, said in a statement. “The experience is sure to thrill any guest.”

There’s one proviso in the fine print: “By entering, you agree to be part of an event that will be covered by the media,” it says. “Oh, and that you will be woken in the morning in a remarkable way. Nothing frightening — we promise!”

IKEA Takes the Next Level

photo cred | The Frisky

When people tell me that they despise going into IKEA, I know that they are lying. I think to myself, “That’s just not healthy. Lying is not healthy.” (There’s that logic again…) How can you hate IKEA? What, you hate modern furniture? You don’t like to eat while you shop? You don’t like to have the satisfaction of putting something together with your hands? You don’t like owning a piece for your home that would actually cost more somewhere else? That’s ludicrous.

I kid I kid. If you’ve got reasons for not liking IKEA, then I’m sure they are justified. I’m going to confess to you right now that I kind of love it. My furniture is not all that modern; everything is really square, but that’s the way I like it. I don’t eat anything when I shop at IKEA because it’s not the same as Costco and I’ve only put one piece together out of the six things I own. When I step into the store, I feel like Summer without my Tom, but I know the experience that went down there and I want that.

IKEA has just announced that I can take my experience to the next level (if I so desire) by purchasing an IKEA home. Working with design firm, Ideabox, the two will produce “eco-friendly prefabricated homes.” These one-bedroom units will be furnished in EVERYTHING IKEA and will be sustainable and green. Prices are $79,500. Not bad…

The only downside to this idea is that any decoration or furniture that you add to it on your own won’t match, but then again…you’ve got a fully furnished house.

What If You Lived In Ikea?

Today, I made my second visit to IKEA and managed to finish everything in 1hr and 15 minutes. New record considering my last visit was much longer than that. I did, however, walk out of the store with two more things that I did not intend to buy initially. Ain’t no thang. I know there’s a use for them.

I recently came across a new photo series featuring three guys who asked themselves, “What if I lived in Ikea?” Photographer Christian Gideon rallied his friends for a little photo shoot within the store and the results are as silly as they get.

Mykea

This year, I took my first trip to Ikea! What I love about the store is that the furniture is so simple and basic that if you wanted a room to match a certain look it would be nearly effortless. What I came to realize was that there was definitely a lack of color. Mykea lets you spruce up your Ikea furniture by adding colored decals to popular Ikea furniture like the Lack table or the Malm bed. To see all the designs visit Mykea.

Hembakat är Bäst [Homemade is Best]

IKEA is known for their inexpensive and modern-designed furniture, but they are also known for their food. This year, I made my first trip to the furniture store. One of the first questions my friends had asked me after visiting was if I had tried the food. Unfortunately, no. I’m sure that will take place on my second visit.

The popular furniture store has now decided to release a cookbook entitled Hembakat är Bäst [Homemade Is Best.] I don’t know what recipes have been included, but will you just look at how the ingredients are presented in the book?! Is this a cook book or a food photography book. These photos were shot by Carl Kleiner and they are beautiful.

Tips from a college junior to a new college freshman

As the students of Seattle University prepare themselves for another year back, a new batch of freshman prepare themselves for the epic first year upon them. When I was a freshman, I didn’t know anything about college. My perception of college was based on movies like Accepted and Road Trip and television shows such as Greek. [But not really.] Most people will say that you have to learn as you go and that’s completely true, but why not take some helpful hints along the way? I tried asking some of my own friends what advice they had, but I think I didn’t phrase the question correctly. Common tips include studying hard, finding the benefits of self study and never stop pursuing further knowledge, getting involved, etc etc, but that stuff is a given.

Here are some things that I have learned from college:

  • Get the boring stuff out of the way first. Find a good insurer to insure your belongings (check out this review for Roost Insurance), make sure your ID is up to date, register for everything you need to register for ect….
  • Don’t add everyone in your class on Facebook. Facebook is for people you know so don’t force any friendships, just let them happen when you get to school and actually meet people.
  • College is not all about drinking and partying. Remember that the school doesn’t actually care to keep you there if they don’t want you.
  • Lanyard around the neck? Not a cute accessory. That’s how we spot out a freshman.
  • Crate & Barrel, IKEA, and Pottery Barn claim to have the ultimate lists for college dorm rooms, but that doesn’t mean that you actually need all that stuff.
  • You are not the shit just because you are in college.
  • Care about something. Learn something and have intellectual conversations.
  • If you can avoid buying your books in the bookstore – do it. Look for your used books on Amazon first or any other discount textbook site – just be careful of which one you use. There’s no reason to buy a new book. Seriously.
  • Core classes may seem pointless in the beginning, but you’ll be grateful for them later. It’s better to be well-rounded then knowledgeable in one area.
  • Study group sessions will help your grade and possibly your social life.
  • Take classes you want to take and are interested in. You’ll “regret” it if you don’t.
  • If you go to a smaller college, use your professor’s office hours. If you don’t – at least attempt at letting your professor know who you are.
  • It’s normal to not know what you’re going to do after college.
  • I know that your school has lots of food options, but try to stick to the normal routine you had before college. Restrict yourself from getting fro-yo every day or endless bottles of pop.
  • Invest in a good alarm clock. If a class starts at 7:45 that doesn’t mean you wake up at 7:45. [Actually had a class with someone on this type of schedule.]
  • Get organized. Use a day planner, post-its, or excel spread sheets.
  • Don’t be…a douche bag.
  • If someone tells you that taking a shot of vodka straight to the eye will get you drunk faster…don’t do it.
