American Music Awards 2021 Red Carpet

Olivia Rodrigo in David Koma

For a solo artist, this was probably my favorite look of the night. Throughout this year and the release of “Sour,” Olivia has become sort of an icon for this generation. Having just snagged 7 Grammy nominations yesterday, it’s safe to say she’s going to have a long career ahead of her. This dress is fun, sparkly, and fitting for a new solo artist.

This Weekend:

At this point, it doesn’t even feel like we’re in quarantine anymore unless it is by choice. And for the most part, that’s exactly what we’re doing. Parts of the country are re-opening up, but it hasn’t been successful. After several months of this, I generally feel like I’m doing okay so we stay indoors and limit ourselves to the deck attached to my apartment. I did, however, run a few more errands than I normally do this weekend which was a welcomed surprise because I love taking longer drives.

What We’re Watching: The Claudia Kishi Club

I binge watched Netflix’s revival of “The Babysitters Club” in two days and could not get enough of Claudia Kishi. She was my favorite character back then in the books and she’s even cooler in 2020. Growing up, I was a huge fan of the series and Claudia playing a young Japanese American girl with her creative flair resonated deeply with me. She was the opposite of the stereotype that we have all become familiar with and some of us needed her character to pave the way ourselves. Netflix’s “The Claudia Kishi Club” says it’s a documentary, but it’s only 17 minutes and we wish it were longer. The special features six Asian American creatives discussing what Claudia Kishi meant to them growing up and it’s the most heartwarming thing you’ll watch all weekend.

What We’re Listening To: JoJo – good to know (Acoustic)

Before I knew we were going to write this post this weekend, I already [shared] that I was listening to JoJo’s acoustic release of her “good to know” album. Two days later and we’ve still got this on repeat. I always love original albums, but there’s something about one that is stripped down that really tugs at the heart strings. We’re just so excited about her come back.

What We’re Wearing: [Leith Ruched Body-Con Tank Dress] – $56 – $29.93

I’ve been having a lazy week lounging in leggings, but because yesterday was Saturday, we pulled on this latest dress that we purchased. Since I’m new to becoming a regular at online shopping, I never know how my purchases will turn out, but I’m glad that this was a perfect fit. Now looking back on it, I wish I had purchased this in several colors! It’s the perfect day to night dress and one that I know I would’ve loved wearing around the office. For now, we’ll just wear it around at home, but we’re okay with that.

What We’re Eating: Soondubu

Ever since Kevin and I discovered the Soft Tofu Kit at the Korean Market that we go to in Daly City, it has become our favorite thing to make! The kit itself just holds the tofu and the sauce, but all you have to do is add water and your favorite toppings and you’ve got a meal. My usual adds:

  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
  • Oyster Sauce
  • Soy Sauce
  • Sugar
  • Bell Peppers
  • Peas
  • 2 eggs
  • Mushrooms
  • Green Onions
  • Black Pepper

Cook it all up and serve it over rice and it’s the perfect comfort meal.

What We’re Drinking: Yakult Soju

This is the easiest cocktail to make! Normally, I don’t drink by myself at home, but since we’re not going out to bars, I figured this could take the place of my happy hours. I was introduced to this combo at a bachelorette party earlier this year so ever since, I’ve just had it on hand in my fridge. All you have to do is mix soju with the Yakult yogurt drink. I’m told it’s even better if you add Sprite, but we have yet to try that!

What We’re Listening to This Weekend:

Our favorite comeback so far in 2020 has been JoJo’s and she served us with not only one album, but two. This week, she released an entirely acoustic version of “good to know” and it’s the kind of album that evokes all of the feels. I kid you not, we had in the background as we were cooking dinner tonight and I nearly found myself in tears to “Think About You.” After all the drama that she had to deal with, this is truly her redemption period and no one deserves it more. If you loved “good to know” when it was released earlier this year, you’ll love the acoustic version 10 times more.

02 May 2020

This Weekend:

It has been a month since we last did an update on this so I figured it might be nice to do a short little roundup of what we’re up to. We are now almost two months into quarantine and getting better at figuring out our rhythm.

What we’re watching: Normal People (Hulu)

Technically I finished this right before the weekend. Normal People was released earlier this week and with 30 minute episodes, the series flies by. We wrapped everything up in the span of two days. Now, I was looking forward to the release especially with the build up leading up to the premiere, but I hadn’t read the book itself. After watching the first episode, it was so easy to get swept up in the young love story of Marianne and Connell. In previous lives, we might have written off a story like this where a shy loner girl ends up with a popular jock, but this one is different and you’ll know it when you see it.

What We’re Wearing: [TAVIK Swimwear Louise Romper – $85]

Okay, so we’re starting to get a little bit creative with our loungewear in quarantine. I had purchase this piece specifically for my Phuket trip, but we didn’t get a whole lot of wear out of it while we were there. Since I want to prioritize being functional and comfortable while working at home, I decided to pull this out of my closet earlier this week. It also feel appropriate as the temperatures are starting to rise once again in the Bay Area as we inch towards summer.

What We’re Listening To: JoJo – good to know (Album)

There hasn’t been a shortage of new releases during this time and I am here for it. Actually for the first time, I’m able to not fall behind in new singles and albums. We’ve been waiting for JoJo’s comeback for some time now and I’m looking forward to listening to “Good to Know” over the span of this weekend. I was already a fan of her released single “Man” so I have no doubts that I won’t feel the same about the rest of her eight songs on the album.

What We’re Cooking: [Ramen Peanut Noodles]

I’ve been putting off this recipe for some time now and I’m not sure why given how simple it is! I’ve unfortunately had to toss two onions in this time that have gone bad because I haven’t made this recipe and that kills me. I’m not a very elaborate chef in the kitchen, but I’m great at making some quick and simple recipes. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally got my hands on some ramen from a Hawaiian market and now those possibilities are endless. My ramen game has increased 10 points, but I can also forgo ramen one night and making a stir fry like this above.

Grammy Awards 2020 Red Carpet

Lizzo wearing Atelier Versace

It’s bittersweet to be watching the red carpet this evening. With the news of Kobe and his daughter’s passing, it’s not surprising that celebrities want to get across the carpet without doing any interviews. Still, as everyone has been saying ‘the show must go on’ and while difficult, it’s turning out to be pretty great so far. Tonight, we’re highlighting look and tomorrow we’ll share our favorite performances including the tribute to Kobe.

Cover of the Day

This cover of “White Iverson” that JoJo did makes the original sound like a completely different song. In a good way!

Music Video of the Day

Update: 9:03 PM  – – Oh no! The embed doesn’t work for this video so please visit this to check it out!

You guys, Jojo is back! I’ve been listening to this single of hers for the last month and I’m not going to lie – every time we get to the pre-chrorus and I’m in my car singing, my hand usually balls into a fist and I get all into performer mode. It’s a thing, apparently. She’s come such a long way from “Leave (Get Out!)” but wow – that song was also a hit and she was only 13 at the time. We can’t wait to see what the rest of her new music looks like. If it’s anything like this, then we know we’re going to  be pretty happy.

Song of the Day

JoJo – When Love Hurts

This song came on in a Uber ride home last night and Gelesia and I instantly fell in love with it. This is going to be a hit, we’re pretty sure of it. I’m going to be requesting this song at all the clubs and same with the Justin Bieber one.

Does anyone remember listening to JoJo? I won’t lie – there was a period in my life where I would listen to her album on repeat. “Too Little, Too Late,” “How to Touch A Girl,” “Leave, Get Out!” “Baby, It’s You,” “Not That Kinda Girl,” ALL SOLID HITS.

Recently JoJo performed a show in Arizona and covered an old R&B favorite of mine SWV’s “Weak” (which can also be found on one of her albums) and it was flawless. It’s been 7 years since she has released an album, but I’m still holding onto that comeback.
