My Favorite Hipsters

Ever since Dov Charney announced the hipster era was “out” several months ago, I became concerned. As a part-time hipster, I guess I don’t really understand how it can go out of style. Being a hipster is not just about the fashion or the music. It is a culture. It is a way of living.

Okay, who are we kidding? While I accept the hipster lifestyle, there’s still something about it that makes me giggle. I actually am amused by the hipster culture. While the rest of the world slash the bros at my school find that it is something to joke about, you’d be surprised at how ahead of the game they are. Hipsters all over have paved the way for various trends that began years ago, but are just now turning mainstream as described in a recent Flavorwire post. When I think of this, I am reminded of the scene from The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda puts Andy in her place by telling her that her retail store sweater was hand picked for her by the people in that room because they made that sweater what it was. I know that that movie has nothing to do with hipsters, but all you need to know is that the hipsters ARE Miranda.

Below are some of my favorite hipsters of our time today:

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been a bad ass ever since she made her acting debut back in 1994 with The Professional. Since then, she has blown us away with her acting abilities and even her rapping skills. She may have portrayed hipster-ish character Sam in Garden State, but we know that she’s a true one at heart. Natalie is a Harvard grad, vegetarian, and an activist!

The Indie Pixie Dream Girls

Q: What actor or actress would you want to play you in a movie?

I have never been able to answer that question. For one, I don’t think any actress looks like me. A woman once told me in an airport that she believed I resembled the actress in Everybody Loves Raymond. Uh which one? The mother or the wife? Instead of going off looks, why not go off of personalities. If I could choose to be any type of character in a film, it would be the indie pixie dream girl.

What does that mean exactly?

“that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” [source]

Meet the girls:

Zooey Deschanel as Summer Hathaway in 500 Days of Summer

Elish Cuthbert as Jordan Roark in My Sassy Girl

Inception

I really love what I do. Tonight my work allowed me the opportunity to see the advanced screening of the new film “Inception,” due out this Friday, July 16th.

I don’t want to give too much away about the film because you will enjoy it so much more if you know less. In fact, Leonardo DiCapario said in an interview not too long ago that he liked that there was so much mystery surrounding the trailer and what the movie was about because it added more suspense.

The cast was amazing. Leonardo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Marion Cotillard blew me away. Some movies rely on an all-star cast to generate more buzz, but most of the time it isn’t accounted for. In fact, many are left feeling unsatisfied. With Inception, you won’t be. Every person has served their purpose. No one impressed me more than Miss Ellen Page. Even though she broke out of her Juno character with Whip It, she truly showed her wide range of acting abilities in this movie.

The film was beautiful, thrilling, and daring. It will keep you on the edge of your seat for all two and a half hours, but you’ll love every minute of it. Christopher Nolan did an incredible job with it all and you might even catch a few similarities from The Dark Knight as well. It’s funny how the movie is about dreams and imagination because you will  find yourself being pulled deeper and deeper into it and it is such an overwhelming feeling how attached you will be to this film in the end. What is real and what isn’t? This film will push you to think. It is complex and built upon layers, but it isn’t a chaotic mess. Just follow along and if you get a little lost along the way, maybe your imagination will put you back on the right track.

The reviews are coming out as we speak. The tough critics over at Rotten Tomatoes have already given it a 96% which is pretty damn good! For reference Toy Story 3 received a 99% and Eclipse got 54%

I also received some incredible responses from our viewers tonight:

“I can’t wait to go to sleep now!”

“…One of the best movies I’ve seen in two years.”

“Exceptional – best one I’ve seen all year.”

“I trust Nolan more than any other director.”

I highly recommend seeing this movie. I might even see it a second time. Let me know what you think!

My Life As Liz

I had no idea what this show was going to be able. From the previews, I just thought it was going to be about her day-to-day life as a high school senior, but no! there’s a plot and everything and characters.

Synopsis: Liz is a senior at her highschool in a conservative town in Texas. She hates it there. She’s very much Juno esque – does what she wants – etc. Liz stands out in her high school, but not in a favoritable way. In fact, she never used to be “alternative,” she used to be a girl with highlights in her hair and non-vintage clothing. She hangs out with these boys that kind of look like AV dorks, but they seem like very nice friends and they let her boss them around. The show reminds me of true life with a normal person, but it is filmed in a way that is almost like a real show…

My take on the show: This brings me back to the high school days for sure. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mean group of girls like this, but I’m sure they exist somewhere… or everywhere. I basically want to be this girl slash have sort of felt like I have been her before except without dying my hair. I love that she is so scene and awesome. Oh high school… how it means so much to be like everyone else when you’re there, it’s too bad no one told you that you start becoming a real person AFTER.

I know, it’s tough to take in.

I hope this show is real. Even if it’s not, I think I would still watch it because the girl makes me laugh.

Life Unexpected

Tonight was a television premiere night for three new shows. First on the review board is Life Unexpected. Before I start, I would just like to say that I haven’t watched regular television in quite some time. Every Sunday, I watch Tough Love with my girls and Greek when it is in season. I watched the entire season of Glee when I was at home for break. With my schedule, it’s really hard to make time for television, but somehow tonight I managed to free up two and a half hours for this.

I first heard about Life Unexpected a couple months ago. The previews looked decent. I was mostly drawn to the show for Shiri Appleby because  she used to be in one of my favorite shows, Roswell, (once on the WB) back when I was ten.

Synopsis: Lux is a fifteen year old girl on the verge of her sixteenth birthday. She has been in foster care all her life and is now seeking emancipation, but she can’t do that unless she gets her birth parents to sign the papers. Both parents are shocked that she has come into their lives and are young and frazzled. Surprise! What else is new? The judge doesn’t grant her emancipation in court because the girl has no job and no place to live. Clearly she isn’t fit to live on her own so she grants her birth parents joint custody.

My take on the show: I’m really quite interested in it so far. The advertisements say it’s like a Juno meets Gilmore Girls, but it is not. For some reason, I do feel like I have seen a show like this before. Do I think it will survive? It’s hard to say. I would really like it to, but it had better have a more hard hitting second episode, cause the premiere was just a tad bit predictable.

Mondays – 9 PM – The CW

Song of the Day

Journey – Don’t Stop Believing

because it is the song of my summers now basically, and I spent my first official night of summer w/ my favorite friends! sans this song though…

And because today I’m posting lots of videos, here’s Ellen Page (Juno) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and an unknown man singing this song off-tempo and off-key.

MTV’s 16 and Pregnant

Tonight, MTV will be premiering their new documentary show “16 and Pregnant,” at 10 PM which will be a 6-week series and feature a new couple and their struggles and joys throughout the process each week. Coincidently, I’m watching Juno right now.
