Hiding Out in Half Moon Bay

Dress – ASTR / Denim Jacket – Gap / Sneakers – Keds / Socks – Uniqlo

What’s better than having an extended period of time off between jobs? Knowing that one of your best friends is also in between jobs at the same time! Brad and I didn’t plan this, of course, but it made things easier. I had a friend to hang out with, but I also had someone that could relate to what I was going through at that exact point in time. There was a longer extended vacation coming before I started the new job, but I also wanted a day to get out of the city. The last time I was in between, I heavily convinced Jason to come with me to Half Moon Bay. He was a good sport. We started the day in Pescadero and ended it with dinner at The Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay.

You’re supposed to be a little careful when you’re in between jobs, but after all, it was a bit of a celebration. Since Brad and I also went to Half Moon, I figured I could own this as my tradition. However, let’s hope that I don’t have to take this trip anytime soon! It was a so-so weather kind of a day, but I wanted to be near the water. Beaches in my hometown are nothing compared to here. I love the easiness of being able to get to one closely from where I am.

Having had a lavish dinner at the Ritz last time, I didn’t feel the need to do the same again. Brad and I settled for a latte for me and sitting down near the fire pit. It’s nice to pretend to be like guests even if it’s short lived!

Our Favorite Looks of 2017

Duster – Azalea / Tee – Abercrombie & Fitch / Pants – Uniqlo / Boots – J. Crew

Sure, these are my 12 favorites look of the year, but they also overlap with 12 of my favorite backdrops from the year! If you’re someone who documents your OOTD’s, then you know that these two things kind of go hand in hand. This year, I experienced a major shift in my outfits and that is mostly due to a location change. Living in South Bay was a dream, but it meant that I was living in this sort of alternate reality where it was summertime every single day. The last four years of that are something that I would never give back, but now that I’m living in San Francisco, I’m glad that I get to dress for true weather. It reminds me of my days in Seattle.

In 2017, I embraced a very casual look and I pushed the boundaries of day to night wear. I showed love to some of my favorite accessories (bandana, baseball cap, choker) and revived some old favorites (Keds!) We didn’t find ourselves immersed in any crazy trends… but I did find some pieces worn by other people on Instagram that I went out and bought myself! It’s not really the same thing, you guys. It’s almost… worse.

Pipe Dreams and Things

Chambray – Madewell / Dress – H&M / Sunglasses – Marc Jacobs / Wallet – Kate Spade / Sneakers – Keds

There are so many hidden gems in the Mission including this entrance to Salumeria, one of my favorite lunch spots from my former neighborhood. I had owned this little black mid-sleeved dress from H&M since college. For some reason, it was extremely difficult for me to part ways with it. It had gotten a lot of use and because it was so simple and versatile, I thought I could keep going almost maybe giving it a second life in post-college. What I learned from wearing this dress very recently was that it was too short to be appropriate for not only work, but also every day wear. I had to let it go and so I did after this day. Since I was taking a risk with the dress, I thought about trying out another risk with this bandana as a choker. We’re probably not pulling it off, but that’s okay!

Summer Look

Hat – Urban Outfitters / Dress – Aritzia / Chambray – Madewell / Sneakers – Keds

This little black dress is my absolute favorite. Whenever I’m caught in a pinch and feel like I have nothing to wear (this is often) I just throw on this black dress and any kind of combination of sweaters or cardigans. On this particularly warm summer, day, I decided that I wanted to include the chambray… but only tied around my waist. For a more casual look, I included this backwards baseball cap and matching Keds. The top and bottom photos are my favorite just because of the backdrop, but I had to include the 2nd photo because that’s my friend Vo whizzing by me on his bike meeting us for lunch!

Chambray and Blue

Chambray – Canyon Child / Turtleneck + Skort – Aritzia / Keds

It’s funny sometimes that I can look back at some of my photos and remember exactly what I was feeling that day and the emotions that were running through me. Sometimes it’s plain as day written across my face, but other times there are instances where I may be feeling nervous or anxious and either I can hide that well when being shot, or it’s very visible in photos and you can tell that I’m uncomfortable.

This one is a good one though! During my time off before working, I met Leslie down by the Embarcadero for lunch at one of our favorite spots – Hog Island Oyster Co. in the Ferry Building. Okay, we’ve been there twice, but we love it so now it’s our thing. Having that time off is something that I’ll always tell people was the best thing ever for me. It felt great to not have to worry about the responsibilities of work in a current job or even a future job yet until you start. I remember waking up every morning for two weeks feeling energized and able to look forward to something that could be exciting for me. I was the happiest I’d been in a long time and it completely shows in this photo. Thanks Leslie for capturing me at one of my best moments!

As for details on the outfit… I really took a shot in the dark with this one! I wasn’t inspired by anything I saw and I had never put something like this together. That turtleneck is my favorite piece ever and I combined it with another Aritzia skort. San Francisco, especially down by the water) can be pretty chilly and windy at times so instead of opting for a light jacket, I threw on my favorite chambray from Gelesia’s line “Canyon Child.” Not wanting to be too dressy in boots or heels, I decided to casual it up with my Keds. Overall, this color combo just works.

Every Day in San Francisco

It’s official! I’m into week 2 of living in San Francisco and no surprise here – I don’t hate it. In a way, life has sort of been upgraded in a number of ways, new job, new city, new commute for awhile (not much of an upgrade,) new home, AND new photographer! I met Jimmy during my first day at work through someone on my team. He’s sort of “the photographer” for outings and events at the company and also just enjoys it in his spare time, but was trying to get more into fashion photography so of course I volunteered myself as a subject. I was really grateful to have had a number of friends / coworkers that I could go to at my last workplace to always take pictures for me, but now that I’m in SF, there’s something vastly different about these photos. I love incorporating parts of the city – the brick, the middle of the street shots, the signs.

Having our office in the Mission District means that we have so many elements to work with. Even though I haven’t known Jimmy for too long, we make a good team. I quickly warmed up to him and have felt pretty comfortable with him shooting me ever since. I’m not sure if it helps that we didn’t know each other too well or that his camera is 10x better than my iPhone. Also, he can access photo-enhancing software like Photoshop to utilize tools like Adobe color picker and wheel. I might have even heard about some unique Illustrator and Photoshop panels available online. Although, whatever’s happening is working!

This is from our 2nd shoot together as he’s also the one that shot me in West Hollywood previously too.

Orange Dreamsicle

Sweater – Oak + Fort / Skirt – Brandy Melville / Sneakers – Keds / Sunglasses – Kate Spade

I have a huge crush on colored walls all over the Bay Area. Sometimes, I even find them to be the best accessory to any outfit because of what it adds. If you’ve been following my recent posts, then you know that I am obsessed with this Oak + Fort pullover sweater. I remember trying it on in store and feeling a little bit on the fence at first. Did I really need another sweater? The answer was so clearly “yes” when I put it on over my head. It was perfectly oversized, sheer enough, but cozy and one that I wanted to live in. I paired it with this corduroy Brandy Melville skirt that I’m still loving years later and to casual it up a bit – threw on the Keds! They never fail me.

Cozy in Brandy

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Uniqlo / Shoes – Keds

95% of the time I prefer to get dressed up for work and to spend a little bit of time constructing new outfits together. For the other 5% though? I don’t have it in me. I wake up and decide I don’t really care how anyone sees me that day and for those days, I turn to outfits like these! To me, it’s still not very dressed up at all. I’m totally completely cozy and my coworkers will still turn to me and think that I put some new effort into an outfit. It’s not true. This Brandy Melville hoodie is one of the best things I own. I think it’s one of their signatures actually and they have it in tons of colors at their store at an affordable price. I’ve had this since I first moved here in 2013 and wear it on the reg. These pants are my Uniqlo jeggings which you’ve seen a million times before and these Keds are from middle school and still wearable, but not as white as they once were.

Sundays in Hayes

Hat – Nordstrom / Top – Brandy Melville / Shorts – Forever21 / Purse – Vince Camuto / Shoes – Keds / Sunglasses – Kate Spade

If I’m remembering this weekend correctly, this was the time when Mandi and I checked out the market down in Hayes Valley where a bunch of local artists and vendors were selling their merch. I don’t remember us finding anything that we fell in love with, but we did sniff through a lot of candles and spent some time getting inspiration for any ideas that might fit her wedding at the time or just for things we wanted in our own lives. It happened to be very sunny in San Francisco that day and if you’re from the area, you know SF doesn’t usually get a true summer. We were very lucky! The top and shorts are something that I would normally wear around the house, but the Keds made it look more playful. However, I didn’t want to look like I was in middle school with this look so I threw on my everyday purse and this hat that I love from Nordstrom for a little edge.

Hi. We’re Orange.

Dress – Topshop / Chambray shirt – Madewell / Sneakers – Keds

I remember seeing Julie Sariñana of Sincerely Jules wearing an outfit similar to this one once so I thought that I could recreate another version of it with my own wardrobe. It’s okay, but it’s not quite 100%. That may be one reason why we haven’t worn a second time yet! I love this Topshop dress on its own, but it always felt like it was begging for a little something extra. I also like wearing it with the white Keds because it downplays it a little bit more to make it seem more casual. Also – the lighting makes my hair orange. This was an accident.
