Minus the Bear Have Broken Up

photo cred | Chona Kasinger

And yes, my heart is pretty much broken. The first text that I wake up to should never have to be about one of my favorite bands breaking up, but that was this morning for me. Minus the Bear is my youth. Growing up, I probably had a much stronger attachment to songs and bands than the average teenager, but that was just who I was – overly passionate. When I discovered “Pachuca Sunrise” it was kind of like a glass shattering experience for me. From then on, I never let go of Minus the Bear. I went to a handful of their concerts and when it came time for me to organize one of my most important shows, I even tried to reach out to them. It was a life goal of mine, even at 16, to try and book Minus the Bear. I still remember the moment where my mentor had thought that I was being a little ambitious, but encouraged me to try anyways.

All that said, I can’t say that I’m surprised. These guys have been around for so long and now it’s time for them to live out their lives with their families. They will surely be missed. 17 years is quite a run to be proud of and their legacy will continue to live on in their six albums. To say farewell to all of their fans, the band will be doing one last tour kicking off on October 9th. I have no idea how to end this post other than that I’ll be listening to Planet of Ice and Menos El Oso the rest of the night. Goodbye.

Minus the Bear Announce New Album

When I learned that one of my favorite bands growing up, Minus the Bear, was releasing a new album – 14 year old me couldn’t contain my excitement. We may be delayed in delivering this news to Yow Yow! but the news came straight to my inbox about four weeks ago. The day that we found out, I spent the entire work day listening to every single album – yes, starting with Highly Refined Pirates. No, it’s not their first album, but it was the first time I ever heard “We Are Not A Football Team” and I thought it seemed fitting to begin where we first met.

Minus the Bear is not only one of my favorite bands coming out of Seattle, but they’ve been the band that I’ve loved the longest. They were my concert tickets for my 17th birthday present from my best friend Lexi. They were also the band that I so badly wanted to book in my years of working in music. Nothing broke my heart more than in my last year of booking I realized that this just wasn’t going to happen for me. And now we’re just out of it completely!

Getting back to the album – Voids will be out March 3rd and shortly after the band will be headed out on their tour for March-April. Tickets are on sale now! Minus the Bear will return home to Seattle on April 15th at the Showbox to close out their tour. Be sure to support them and show them the love! Also if you missed it, today’s Song of the Day is the first single off of their new album, “Invisible.”

Out on the Town: 11/17

It’s been over a year since I’ve seen one of my favorite Seattle bands, but hopefully – someone out there – is seeing them in Seattle tonight!

Minus the Bear is playing tonight at Showbox at the Market along with Cursive and Girl in a Coma. I’ll never forget the time they played at this same venue years back while I was still in high school and the show had sold out while I was in line and still without a ticket. The problems I had back then…

Doors open at 8:00pm and tickets are on sale for $25, I believe.

Minus the Bear – Summer Angel

Music Heavy

I’d like to think that it would be possible to categorize one day out of the week has being more music focused than other days, but the truth is, it only becomes “Music Tuesday” or Music Wednesday” if there’s more news just happening.

SO HEY! Music Tuesdays this week! I’ve got the new music video by Mayer Hawthorne for “No Strings” and as we all know, this is my favorite song from him, but probably not my favorite music video by him. That’s okay.

As previously mentioned, Ben Gibbard is on the brink of releasing his first solo album. 107.7 THE END premiered a song off of it last night entitled, “Teardrop Windows” and it is very Ben Gibbardy.

Check it out here.

Lastly, congratulations Minus the Bear on the release of your new album “Infinity Overhead!”

Out on the Town: 8/27 and 8/28

It’s Minus the Bear week y’all!

The band will be performing songs off of their new album Infinity Overhead at Comet Tavern tonight in Capitol Hill. Doors 9pm, 21+ and tickets are $10 with proceeds being matched by Freedom to Marry. This is typically a smaller venue for the band and since no tickets will be sold earlier in the day, just arrive early.

Tomorrow, Minus the Bear  will perform a set at Easy Street Records at 7pm – all ages – and free to celebrate the release of their album.

Minus the Bear – Infinity Overhead

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared some new music with all of y’all! Well today – for one day only – one of my favorite Seattle bands, Minus the Bear, has made their new unreleased album Infinity Overhead available for stream. This will only be up for 24 hours and it started at midnight so you’ve still got sometime to listen to it. I highly recommend doing so as…this is what I will be doing all day while writing and working for Yow Yow!

Minus the Bear has been one of my favorite bands since I was 16 and it is incredible to track their growth and sound over the last few years.

Check out the goods here.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce to you all today that one of my favorite local bands, Minus the Bear, will be releasing their new album “Infinity Overhead.” Words cannot even describe how much I love this group, but I will say that at age 15, it was always my goal to book them for a show. Unfortunately, I haven’t quite succeeded, but I don’t believe my booking days are over just yet. It is amazing to see how far this band has come. I must have been listening to them now for eight years? I also had the opportunity to see them last year at Bumbershoot and as always, was blown away.

Out on the Town: 9/24

My ears did a double-take today when I heard a commercial on the radio announcing that Macy’s downtown would be hosting one of my favorite bands – Minus the Bear for a special performance in their mstylelab department.

First off – double-take, that’s not right is it? I couldn’t think of the phrase for listening.

Secondly – I have no idea what the mstylelab is and why it is called that. Odd name for a location in a department store if you ask me.

Third – Minus the Bear is blowing up ALL of the place these days with all of their random performances in the city, but I think I kind of love it. It’s something you would never expect, which probably means it’s going to be pretty rad.

Here’s the official event description in case mine wasn’t exciting enough.

“mstylelab Concert Tour presents Minus the Bear
Check out Minus the Bear perform live in mstylelab on Level 4. After the performance, meet the band! The first 300 customers to make a $35 purchase in mstylelab (Young Men’s or Juniors) get to hang with the band and receive their autograph!

The event starts at 2PM! Do I have time to go before the wedding? Probably not.
