What We’re Listening to This Weekend:

We don’t have an album to share with you today, but instead it’s a mix from sosupersam. It is sometimes crucial for me to have a nice soundtrack as I’m working especially when I’m at home – yeah, we’ve been working all weekend! At work, it’s a little bit different because it’s so stop and go with meetings. I’ll put in my headphones for what feels like 5 minutes before I have to take them out again and be on my way to a meeting or a conference room or a call. At home though, I’m going to want something that I can listen to continuously, which is why I usually try to pick an album or a long track. If you’ve ever been with me when I’m choosing music, then you know I can’t just listen to any old playlist because I’m going to constantly skip over songs. This one is really good though; listen to it from start to finish and ENJOY!

Life With Spotify

screen-shot-2016-09-11-at-4-03-30-pm

I can’t imagine a world without Spotify. In fact, I want to know why Spotify wasn’t created earlier so that I didn’t have to spend much of my adolescence with iTunes. Every time someone asks me if they should switch from regular Spotify to Spotify, I am the biggest advocate. Just to be clear here – I’m on a family plan now, I think so I don’t know how much that costs, BUT when I was paying for premium on my own at just $10/month, it was completely worth it. You may think that you can live in a world where an ad plays after every 5 songs or so, but when you’ve lived in a world without it – you’ll never go back. Secondly, it’s important to me that I can download my playlists and be able to play my music without being on Wifi – one I’m saving data (I think – I’m not sure, but probably) but two – I can listen to these playlists wherever I want including when I’m flying, which is a basic necessity.

Today we’re going to spend some time talking about two features from Spotify that I have been obsessed with lately – Release Radar and Discover Weekly. When I was in college, I definitely had a lot of time to find new music because let’s be real – it’s not like we were doin’ much else. These days, it’s harder cause I work and stuff during the day. We don’t have time to find new music on blogs like we used to, but luckily Spotify is willing to do the work for me.

Release Radar pulls me a curated list of new songs every Friday that artists that I already listen to have recently released. This is great for a number of reasons. A lot of times, I become obsessed with one or two songs from an artist, but then I sort of forget about them over time and internally make them a one-hit wonder by accident. This playlist reminds me of those that I once loved even including bands from my scene days in case I’m feeling nostalgic. Also, it’s not like I have this internal timer that lets me know every time an artist or band I listen to releases a new song and unless I’m searching for it, I wouldn’t hear about it any other way.

Every Sunday, I got Discover Weekly working for me. At the beginning, this was like a godsend, but as the weeks went by… I started to wonder if Spotify really knew me. The purpose of this playlist is that it pulls songs that are similar to what you already listen to – totally made for introducing you to new material and using machine learning and all that. Sometimes they get it right and other times, I clench up my fist like that Arthur meme. Whatever the case, I realized I need to be more appreciative because at the end of the day, this is saving me so much time. It’s not a perfect system, but what is? For the most part, this functionality has introduced me to a lot of new artists that I’m really happy I know about now because of this.

I haven’t used Apple Music or Tidal so I can’t really compare across all platforms, but I’m very happy with Spotify.

Song of the Day

It’s funny when you go into a song kind of thinking that you’re going to hate it, but then… you end up liking it. Is anyone else still confused about this Mac Miller / Ariana Grande relationship? How did this happen all of a sudden? I know I know, her first song was a collab with him, but I never saw this coming.

Most Entertaining Thing I’ve Watched All Day

There are no words. How these students are keeping a straight face through this entire thing is just beyond me. One teacher parodies Top 40 songs to introduce new rules and guidelines in her class and the video has gone viral.

President Obama Throws A Music Festival

We’ll never have another President as cool as Barack Obama. Earlier this summer, President Obama shared with everyone his summer playlist and not only was it impressive and overlapping with songs that we also listen to – he is now announcing that he’ll be throwing a festival on Monday, October 3rd. The music festival, which will be held at the White House will be called “South by South Lawn: A White House Festival of Ideas, Art, and Action” –┬ácollaborating with SXSW and the American Film Institute.

The festival will feature panel discussions, live musicial performances, and a student film festival. The panels will focus on influencers and community leaders who are doing good in the world.

A lineup for the music festival hasn’t been announced yet, but we have no doubts that this festival won’t include an all-star lineup. In fact, we’re pretty sure that he can get just about anyone to play this so…

Also, if you think that you belong at this event or no someone that should be present, you can actually nominate a guest here.

Carpool Karaoke w/ Britney Spears

I know I can’t be the only one who was itching to see this? It was actually kind of enjoyable to watch. Britney used to be an icon for me growing up and even though she’s got her residency in Vegas currently and her family and things seem great, I can’t help but remember that period in her life when things were really NOT great and the fact that she’s still under a conservatorship.

I liked that we got to hear her sing a bit in this, but not sure why she was still lip synching through “Toxic.”

MARLENE – Sweet

We still love listening to a song and after 20 seconds can immediately tell that it’s going to be a jam.

Let’s Talk About These Cupcakes

Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato are performing in Seattle tonight so Cupcake Royale went ahead and sent these cupcakes over to Key Arena. How GOOD are these?! I’m dying at the one that says “Throw some bacon on it” – we still don’t know what that lyric means in that song, but we love these anyways.

What We’re Listening to This Weekend:

You guys, I have so few weekends left to myself until I’m traveling on the road for work so this weekend is one that I’m looking forward to having ALL TO MYSELF! Last night, we raged pretty hard for Manan’s birthday so for now I’m just using this as an excuse for me to be not capable of doing anything else Saturday/Sunday except for catching up on work and spending Q. time with Yow Yow! The other day, I had this craving to listen to all of my favorite early John Mayer albums. I’d forgotten just how good they were. #blessed that Kevin introduced me to JM so long ago when I was just 9 years old and listening to Inside Wants Out for the first time. It was so good that we’re going to do the same thing this weekend that we did earlier in the week and listen to it over and over again. I wish we could go back to getting music like this from him. Today, we’re sharing Room For Squares because it’s one of the few albums in which I love every single track. There are very few albums in the world that do that for me.

Enjoy y’all!

Parson James – Temple (Niko The Kid Remix)

We definitely have shared the original song on Yow Yow! before, but this remix is just so good. I found it on Spotify’s Discover Weekly Playlist this morning and with how things have been going with our relationship, I really didn’t have high hopes. This, however, did not disappoint and I’ve already listened to it 3 times today. I’m also very close to saying that I prefer this over the original…maybe we just said it…!
