2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Normally, I start this post as soon as the awards show ends, but I knew that this year was going to take a little bit longer. In fact, I cleared the entire rest of my night to write this post because I wanted to take extra care of it. I also didn’t want to fuck this up. Before we get into what everyone wore, I want to say how difficult it is to write this post. Everyone. EVERYONE was extremely beautiful and elegant and this year, it wasn’t about the gowns at all because the color black symbolized something more. It was a movement of women who stood together supporting each other against sexual harassment, sexual assault, gender inequality, unequal pay for women, and so much more. Why is this list even as long as it is? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? We’re also not focusing on significant others and dates to the awards show because this year many actresses chose to bring along with them activists and strong women in this world who are leading these efforts everywhere.

This time around, we’re going to do things a little bit differently. What will stay the same – the photos and the designer. But I’m keeping my critiques to myself because I just don’t think that on a night like this and an award show as amazing as this one was this evening, that we need any more criticism towards women and how they are dressed. And maybe we’ll choose to continue to do it this way from now on.

What I’m really excited to focus on in this post is how these stylists and actresses rose up to the challenge of wearing these black gowns and making it their own. They added pops of color, accessorized, and emphasized their hair and makeup instead of letting the gowns speak entirely for them. Except in a way, they did – powerfully. It will be hard to select my favorites, which I’ll share on my Instagram Stories later on this evening.

And while this evening was moving and inspiring, it’s a reminder to me that there’s still a lot of work to do. That there are men in that audience that are not supporters and instead abusers that have not been called out yet. That while we shifted the focus on the red carpet to not ask about who they were wearing, reporters were not asking enough men about what they were going to do to support the #TimesUp movement or how they felt about it. Very few wore anything, but black on the red carpet, but is this the same “fall-in-line” culture just repeating itself again? Also, wearing a uniform black dress doesn’t solve the problem(s). In high school, these sort of things were just called spirit days. (sorry was that harsh)

There’s a lot to unpack probably in the coming months, but we don’t gotta do that tonight…

Emmy’s 2013

Rose Byrne in Custom Calvin Klein Collection

I wasn’t that into the Emmy’s this year for some reason and that could’ve been for a few reasons:

  • I was stoked on the Seahawks winning. Again.
  • I only cared about the red carpet (nothing new there)
  • Was I the only one that thought the award show was kind of a snoozefest?

Typically when we cover award shows, we generally just stick to the fashion and that’s exactly what we’re going to do again. But here are the winners in case you are wondering – – via Refinery29

Rose Byrne’s gown was easily one of my favorites from the entire evening!

  • Did anyone see Bruno Mars’ silly tantrum backstage after Adele won for best pop vocalist?
  • Chris Brown. Quit your lip synching or gtfo the stage.
  • I don’t think I could ever get sick of The Foo Fighters.
  • I actually enjoyed Dave Grohl’s speech and appreciate him for voicing his opinion, but  it’s a shame they cut him off…
  • I could’ve sworn I saw a twinkle in Mark Foster’s eye when he was singing The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” My heart melted because it felt like he was just singing straight to me.
  • John Legend grooving to The Beach Boys was also quite adorable.
  • The Beach Boys are looking and sounding pretty great for their age! It feels like just yesterday I was watching them on that one episode of Full House.
  • Nope Chris Brown, we don’t have to forgive you. The Grammy’s can put you in our faces all they want, but I’m not budging.
  • Even though it wasn’t well received, I loved Taylor Swift’s dress during her performance of “Mean.” Now if I could only find out who the designer was…
  • Neil Patrick Harris is a babe.
  • I am still amazed by Katy Perry every time I hear anything about her and her music. Does anyone remember the poor review I gave her nearly two years ago? She’s grown as an artist definitely, but I’m not taking back anything I said. Her new song has potential for being the new girl anthem of 2012 though.
  • Adele SLAYED w/ her performance!
  • Bon Iver for Best New Artist – YAY! Great speech.
  • Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston: Flawless
  • Nicki Minaj’s performance is not as family-friendly as I thought it would be. It was downright terrifying.
  • Adele is also the loveliest human being ever.  What a doll! She totally deserved all of her awards tonight.
  • (and none for Lady Gaga – sad day)

On an important related note, this HelloGiggles post about why people shouldn’t be okay with Chris Brown performing at the Grammy’s is quite insightful. I’ve had a similar opinion for awhile, but usually when I talk about that I make jabs at his performance and the more obvious scandal. This writer, however, has got some pretty solid facts and it is worth reading. And not to start something controversial, but the reason why that HelloGiggles post is mentioned on Yow Yow is so we can avoid things like this. It’s important for all of us to remember that there’s a border between a play on words or a play off pop culture, but this is not one of those times. It’s not cute anymore especially when it involves Chris Brown. Typing things like this out as a tweet is not the same as feeling the same way or wanting to be in that situation. Not being able to tell the difference between these things frightens me and makes me fear for the safety of other young women that have this notion in their head that it is okay to say these things.

The Playbook

If I could swoon over any character from a television series, it would probably be How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson played by Neil Patrick Harris. Well, my first choice would be Adam Brody, but that show is long gone so naturally, I had to move on. Barney has got the most game that I have ever seen in a character, let alone, out of anyone I know in real life. He always knows the right thing to do and say except in Season 3-Episode 10 “The Yips.” If you haven’t seen the show at all, you should probably get on that. This year, I missed his annual “suit up” day, but feel that I redeemed myself when I hosted my “Legen-wait for it-Dary” birthday party.

If you’re a guy that has not had a great deal of success in your game, I suggest you pick up a copy of “The Playbook” to guide you along. Couldn’t hurt right? In fact, buy all three books because they will probably change your life.

Beastly // Song of the Day

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD5YWkGi-8o]

Beastly is a new movie starring Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary-Kate Olsen and Neil Patrick Harris. Based on the book, this movie is supposed to be a modern day version of The Beauty in the Beast. I’ve never read the book. I’ll also admit that I was a little skeptical at first, but the trailer proved me wrong. I think this looks like it’s gonna be a good movie – then again, you never really know with trailers.

What else is working in favor of this movie?

The main character Alex Pettyfer is quite the looker.

Mary-Kate is acting again!

Any trailer that includes a Death Cab for Cutie gets an A+ in my book.
