Song of the Day

BRONSON, ODESZA, Golden Features – VAULTS

I feel like I often find myself craving new music from Odesza so seeing this at the top of my Release Radar yesterday was such a treat! We’re crossing our fingers for more, but we’ll also take what we can get!

Out on the Town: 5/18

The last time we wrote an “Out on the Town” post was back in 2016! 2019 is all about bringing back our usual posts apparently. Really though, this post is a throwback to the two things I love in Seattle music. Since I’ve gotten older, going “out on the town” isn’t something I do as often. I’m not even going to be able to attend this event, but it’s so good that I had to share. I’d be doing a disservice to you all if I didn’t.

For one night, Death Cab for Cutie and Odesza will come together for what is sure to be an amazing evening. These two groups are so different, but if you’re from Seattle, you likely are a fan of both just by nature.

From Death Cab for Cutie’s Facebook Page:

Bellingham and WWU is where it all began. We have so many memories of house shows, The Showoff Gallery, The 3B, Red Square and KUGS, all places we met friends and found our community. All places vital to the start of our band. And as we have continued on, it’s been amazing to see and hear so much music continue to flow out of Bellingham too.

So when we met ODESZA, our bond of being “from Bellingham” was an instant connection. We know the same spots, we hiked the same trails, and we share a similar spirit that our days living there allowed to grow. It was only natural that we thought “let’s play a show together and celebrate our starts.”

Seattle friends of mine, do what you do best: support local music. You better believe that if I were still at home that I would be here. This is definitely not something to be missed.

Favorites of 2017

For once, I’m feeling very on top of my end-of-the-year round up posts. Normally, you would see some of these after the new year, but I guess you can thank the Seattle snow for keeping us indoors these last few days and unlimited downtime. Of course, I’m not mad at it because during the rest of the year, we never get this time to sit down and just write.

Favorite Style Icon: Margot Robbie

Is anyone as excited as I am to see I, Tonya?! I still remember watching the teaser trailer like it was yesterday and while I don’t see movies in theaters often, I’m willing to break my rule for this one. Margot Robbie has been on my list of style icons to watch for some time, but it was this year that I started to notice that outfit after outfit, she was consistently nailing it. Whether it’s getting glammed up for the red carpet or dressing down, Margot’s accessories and beauty look are always a perfect match. With the upcoming award season, we can’t wait to see what she does next.

Runner Up: Gal Gadot

Favorite Getaway: Pescadero / Half Moon Bay

It may have only been a day trip for me, but it was definitely one of my most unforgettable memories from the year. After leaving my job and not having too much time in between to start my new one, it didn’t make sense to come back home or plan an extravagant getaway. The good thing about California though is that there are no shortage of destinations to venture out to even in one day. I picked what I thought to be very quaint and cute, but maybe not a huge tourist attraction, found a friend that was in the same boat as I was and we took off! It was a random weekday and so quiet out on the road, but exactly what we needed. It was so fun to just go to the beach and explore this land that no one was at. It was the most calm and serene that I had felt in the last few months and I knew after that day that we had made a good decision about the trip.

Runner Up: Disneyland

Favorite artist of the year: SZA

Wow, was this a tough decision to make. If I could have had two tied for first place, it would have been SZA and Khalid! But I had to make a choice and the reason why I picked SZA was because I felt her music was so much more relatable to what I was going through this year. 2017 was entirely a year for me and focused on me and listening to her in a weird way made me feel like I could do anything. I owned my mistakes, my flaws, made decisions on a whim, drove away from my comfort zone and never looked back. She’s amazing.

Runner Up: Khalid

Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Siesta Key

You know a show is special when you and your coworker make a whole Instagram Live dedicated to it. Siesta Key was the standout reality series of the year for me. The commercials and trailers penned it as your next generation Laguna Beach, but it is so much more than that. I could talk about this show for hours, but instead of doing that I will just say that the show returns to MTV on January 15th so you should use your time now to get caught up on season 1.

Runner Up: Riverdale

Favorite item purchased this year:

If I could have a wardrobe that only came from Aritzia, I would never be unhappy. I wasn’t expecting to find this dress when I stepped into the store that day. In fact, I was on the hunt for a Teddy Jacket over at Uniqlo and when I didn’t find it, I stopped into Aritzia for lightening round shopping fest. This dress was one of the first pieces that caught my eye and right away I knew I had to try it on. I didn’t even have an event to wear it to if I had bought it (luckily that came later!) but I knew I had to have it. It fit me in all of the right places and was so elegant and beautiful. The great thing about a classic LBD is that there is always going to be an occasion to wear it to. I look forward to keeping this in my closet forever ever.

Runner Up: Gap Denim Jacket

Favorite albums (in no particular order):

  1. Kehlani – SweetSexySavage
  2. Khalid – American Teen
  3. Dua Lipa – Self Titled
  4. SZA – Ctrl
  5. Calvin Harris – Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
  6. Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me
  7. ODESZA – A Moment Apart
  8. Kelela – Take Me Apart
  9. Shawn Mendes – Illuminate
  10. H.E.R. – Self Titled

Favorite Online Past Time: Twitter

When I hate you, but I actually love you. I hate that it was the political turmoil that brought me even closer to Twitter in the last year, but it’s completely true. It’s a large source for my news, but it’s also one of the platforms that can make me laugh consistently. Who knew 180 characters could do that for you… or … however, many characters they allow now? I wish I could say that I was refined and listened to podcasts on my commute, but no, I’m the girl in the backseat of my Uber and Lyft furiously scrolling through my feed to see how much I can get through before I’m dropped off at my local Starbucks.

Runner Up: HQ, Instagram, what else?

October Favorites

Favorite TV Show – Riverdale

I’ve been hearing about this series for awhile now, but never saw myself as the kind of person that could binge watch a show. It is only in its second season though so you may have though “well, better to start now than when it is in its 4th, right?” When Kevin was in town, he set up my Netflix for me so that I could watch directly from my TV and that was life changing. After he left, this was the first show I turned on and within just a few days, I had finished the entire first season. I love a good CW series and didn’t find myself resonating too strongly with Dynasty (a new series from this past fall.) The show reminds me a little bit of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, but not complex enough that I get confused by all the story lines. I’m also particularly excited by this romance between Betty and Jughead. I’m familiar with the comics, but not the storyline from the comics so it’s almost like beginning this series with a fresh start!

Favorite Album – Odesza – A Moment Apart

In the years that they’ve been around, I had never gotten a chance to see Odesza live up until just last weekend! Obviously, I’m super biased towards any musician or band that comes out of Seattle, but there’s something special to see someone charge $5-8 for a ticket all the way up until now when they’ve sold out three nights in a city that isn’t their hometown and I’m forced to buy it on Stubhub. I’ve been listening to this album weekly since it came out and was even more excited when I found out I’d be seeing them in concert at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley – a first for me! There’s not one song that I don’t like. Listen to it from start to finish.

Everlane Pima Micro Rib Long-Sleeve Crew – $30

I was really lucky when I had the chance to buy this tee in stores last weekend because now it’s totally waitlisted. Bummer! I have a couple of simple black long-sleeve tees already at home, but it feels as though you can never have enough. There are so many fabrics to buy them in, fits, some can be a turtleneck. This one, in particular, I knew I didn’t have and needed to have. It’s ribbed material and completely fitted so when you wear it tucked into pants, it’s very chic and since it’s already in black, naturally slimming. Since I purchased it, I’ve already worn it three times and I’m glad I got it before having to wait until March. At just $30 a pop, I wish I would’ve known sooner so that I could buy this in all the colors.

Favorite Product – Malin + Goetz Detox Face Mask – $44

My collection of masks at home are growing! While I love trying new products, I started to have this inkling that the products I was receiving or being gifted with weren’t always the ones that were best for my skin. Were they for more general skin types? For those with dry or sensitive skin? I was using all different kinds, but I wasn’t sure if anything was actually happening so I decided to a store I trusted to find something that fit what I was looking for. I landed on this Malin + Goetz mask, which has been my favorite. I use it twice a week and for only five minutes, which means I don’t have to wait around for a long time for it to do its thing. As soon as it hits your skin, it begins to start foaming so make sure you put on a thick layer and get every inch of your skin for it to be in full effect. It’s still early and I’m not sure if I can pin point any differences yet, but my hope (or what I was promised) is that my skin will start to look brighter and break out less.

Odesza – All We Need (ft. Shy Girls) (Beat Connection remix)

This is actually my favorite song off of the Odesza album so when I learned that Beat Connection was going to remix it up, I knew it could only get better from here.

Favorites of 2014

Favorite Style Icon: Lily Aldridge

Lily is a style icon both on the runway and on the red carpet. This year, we really got to see her show up at a lot of events dressed to perfection. She was featured in our “Snaps for a Snapshots” several times in 2014 so even by the numbers alone, she beats everyone else. We’re looking forward to seeing more of her in 2015 and someday taking over the head angel slot when Adriana and Alessandra retire.

Runner up: Jamie Chung

Odesza – How Did I Get Here

It’s an oldie, but a goodie! A certain someone has been playing this song in the car recently so imagine my surprise when I discovered this was a part of their 2012 album! Feels like it just came out in 2014.

Also, happy Friday ya’ll and our 1,000th “Song of the Day” post. I cannot believe we’ve shared 1,000 songs on Yow Yow! This also doesn’t include the many albums we’ve talked about, remixes of the day, and music videos of the day type posts. Werk.

Pretty Lights – Lost and Found ODESZA Remix

Has anyone watched Divergent yet? I caught the film last week in San Diego with Ashley and was obsessed. I hate to say it, but I think I loved it a little bit more than Hunger Games. Additionally the soundtrack was amazing.
