The Closet: December 2020

[The Kooples Medium Black Emily Bag Croco Print] – $450

I always think that this post isn’t necessary in the month of December because we already do the holiday gift guide, holiday party dress guide and New Year’s Eve outfit guide. Sometimes, the things we want just don’t fall into those three categories though. And because of that, here we are showing you the things you still might want for your closet. On a typical year, we would be looking forward to Boxing Day sales – traditionally the day after Christmas. It’s the time where I splurge on winter coats that I’ve been eyeing all season and the last of the sweaters before I head into spring. Though it’s not like us, we completely avoided the sales and the posts promoting them this year. Since I’ve been spending so much time at home, I decided to invest in items that would make living and working at home more comfortable for the foreseeable future. That being said, here are some things I’m sad to pass on.

A 2021 New Year’s Eve

[& Other Stories Ribbed Sweetheart Neck Bustier Midi Dress] – $129

You may feel uncomfortable dressing up for New Year’s Eve this year without any plans. Power through. I’m a huge believer that you get what you put out into this world. If dressing up and making yourself look and feel good for one evening makes the difference, then you should do it. Every year, I kind of dread New Year’s Eve personally all while still writing this post annually. Just because I don’t have big plans doesn’t mean I don’t want you all to look great. And because this year has just been A LOT, I’m planning on treating myself in the best way possible.

The Closet: November 2020

[Topshop Clara Shirt Jacket] – $140

As always, the theme is cozy here. Never have I ever leaned into the lounge wear trend more than I have now, but I know someday, I’ll be able to mix and match these pieces for more acceptable outfits in the outside world. In addition to comfortability, now is the best time to stock up on basics. I’ve come to the realization that that is truly something you can never have enough of. Until now, it’s also not something that I prioritized. We are getting a head start on posting this now so that we can begin an earlier release date for our holiday gift guide. Enjoy!

The Closet: October 2020

[TheAnnieFoxShop Vegan Faux Leather Mask] – $16.90

And just like that, our transition into fall things is here! It’s chilly these days. My space heater has become my best friend and no matter how many layers I wear, it never quite feels enough. More than ever, since we’re spending more time at home, I’m watching my wardrobe become increasingly cozy. The number of lounge pieces I’ve purchased in this span of time may even be surpassing the rest of my work wardrobe.

What I’m leaning a lot from this experience too is that cozy doesn’t mean lazy. It doesn’t mean you’re not trying. In fact, you can still dress up these pieces and they can be equally chic.

The Closet: August 2020

[Society6 Whimsical Sky Face Mask] – $16.99 – $13.59

This is quite possibly the bulkiest Closet post we’ve created in awhile! The good thing though is the pieces are all at the intersection of summer and fall. I’m also convinced that there’s something in here for everyone and at varying price points. Even a lot of the summer-y pieces can be transformed for fall wear. For example, the jumpsuit below? Pop a chunky sweater over it and you’ve got a look. We’ve been doing a lot of shopping lately ourselves so even though I’ve shared all of these here with you, I personally need to refrain from buying these myself. Enjoy!

The Closet: July 2020

[Free People Lou Jean Babydoll Dress] – $128

With just a few more weeks of summer left (can you believe it?!) it’s tough to know what to shop for. Do we continue to buy summer wear and hope for clearance or do we begin prepping for fall? San Francisco summers make it hard to decipher. In this week alone, I found myself purchasing a swimsuit that I may not use this season and a half-zip long sleeved sweater. It’s clear that we are also still trying to figure this out. This month’s post teeters on both seasons if you’re like us and can’t make up your mind. For once, it also has a hearty mix of accessories along with it!

The Closet: June 2020

[H&M Denim Jacket] – $30

We’ve transitioned to “there is no point in shopping” to “we’re in this for the long haul!” While I’ve never considered myself an online shopper… I’m not lying, I use Amazon once a year, there is a joy that is associated with receiving packages. And that goes for any type of package, not even just the shopping you’re doing for yourself. In times like these, where it seems like things will never get better, we have to treat ourselves. My justification is that I still need clothes to wear to work for my video calls. Also, because of our social media presence, it helps to have outfits that you can be excited by. I promise to be responsible, but I am also going to be making a shopping purchase as soon as we hit “post” on this.

The Closet: April 2020

[Lirika Matoshi Hearty Corset Midi Dress] – $449

It’s interesting to look back and see how much shopping was incorporated into my life. On a lazy, but nice weathered weekend, I would easily find myself in Hayes Valley or Lower Pac Heights just to browse. Extra time after work before a happy hour? You can find me at the mall most likely picking up something that I likely didn’t need at the time. In the last year while doing a deep dive into my finances with a friend of mine, I learned that I shop to find joy. Now you’ll notice that sentence looks different than “I find joy in shopping.” On some of my worst days, for reasons I couldn’t explain, spending money seemed like the solution to solving my problems.

Since I was able to detect that in myself months back, shopping during quarantine hasn’t been an issue for me. In a way, it’s almost refreshing to a) save money and b) discover the clothes that I actually like to wear

Can you tell that we’re excited when shelter-in-place gets lifted and we’ll have a chance to donate some things? I do have to admit though, while I haven’t done my “usual” shopping, I did just purchase a set of 3 cloth masks from Etsy. I felt that was a necessary purchase.

The Closet: February 2020

[Missguided Lace Up Heeled Sandal in Black] – $34 – $19

We are just kicking off a 2020 year of trips! Many of my closest friends are getting married this year and while we typically do our fair share of wedding guest dress purchases, some of these are stretching to other wedding activities – showers, longer weekends, destination weddings, bachelorette parties! It’s a lot to prep for. Last week we were just in LA and there’s something about venturing to a new city that makes us feel like anything we currently own won’t do. This edition of The Closet is jam packed with items that you could bring along with you for any vacation! As always, you know yourself best and whether or not you need to break out the wallet. At the same time, practicing willpower isn’t underrated.

What To Wear: Ringing In A New Decade

[Zara Sequined Velvet Dress] – $89.90

Left and right, friends of mine are messaging regarding our New Year’s Eve plans. What I’m coming to find is that as we get older, there is less and less excitement revolving around this holiday. One day, I really hope one of my friends decides to get married on this day because I think that’s ultimately the best way to celebrate this evening. As of right now the number one plan in the running is a lovely dinner with my girlfriends and then after that, a quiet night in. We are graduating to grandma status over here.

For those of you who still have the energy to get out there on New Year’s Eve, I wish you the best and that you look great doing it!
