The Puzzle Place

Isn’t it funny how something in your day-to-day can instantly remind you of something from your childhood? I was at work today when Crystal had mentioned to me a sushi restaurant in the city called “Zushi Puzzle.” I hadn’t thought about my favorite childhood show since I was probably a kid, but immediately was reminded of The Puzzle Place! I was in love with this show like I loved Sesame Street and something that was really important to me even back then, was seeing another character that looked like me. I didn’t know it then, but I certainly know it now and understand why Julie Wu was my favorite character of them all. Our favorites are always the ones that can identify with us in some way or another. Anyways, I’m not sure if anyone watched this growing up, but looking back I’m impressed with how diverse their characters were. Well done, PBS!

Cocktails in Different Glasses

I have really special feelings for a day called Sunday. It’s sounds weird to say that, but growing up – Sunday has always been reserved for both rest and relaxation. It’s also “homework” day – and a day when I am the most productive out of the weekend especially if I slack off Friday-Saturday. Now that I’m not in school anymore, it’s not that I don’t feel like I’m learning anymore, but in a way… kind of? I’m learning concepts and strategies in a very specific industry – something that I’m growing a career in. Sometimes though, you just want to learn about non-sensical things, things you’ve always been curious about or something you can start a conversation with over brunch. That’s what we’ve been trying to do on Yow Yow! lately, which is why you’ll see Blog Roundups happen on Sundays. Today, we’re sharing a pretty educational and interesting video about how bartenders choose glasses for cocktails – something that I’ve always been particularly curious about. Enjoy!

The Head & The Heart for Austin City Limits Performance Airing This Weekend

Not too long ago, I discovered on late night weekends that PBS would air performances from Austin City Limits. Sometimes they were dated back to the 80’s, but some were as recent as 2011! This Saturday, PBS will be airing a very special performance from one of my favorite bands here in Seattle – The Head & The Heart. You can catch it on PBS at 11PM EST/PST.

If you miss it, you can catch the special in its entirety here beginning Sunday, January 8th.

For now, catch a sneak preview of “Down in the Valley” below:

Something in the Water

Can’t wait until next Friday to watch the new PBS Seattle music scene documentary? Watch a preview here!

The mini doc was directed by Ward Serrill and highlights how the Seattle music scene has evolved immensely over the last couple of years. There will also be performances by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Head & The Heart and Shabazz Palaces in it. This will probably be the first thing I watch once I’m done with my work for the day. The feelings I have on the music scene here always translates over in the cheesiest sappiest way possible, but I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing it has been to watch the bands I loved at 15 accomplish the things they’ve always dreamed of within six years and these days – much less than that! The Head and The Heart has only been around for like two years or something like that.

Whether or not I leave Seattle after I graduate, the music scene and all of my experiences with it will always have a special place in my heart.

In Seattle News…

There was so much Seattle news swirling around yesterday that I decided to just make a separate post for it away from the rest of the pop culture news going on in the world.

– During Bumbershoot weekend, Kevin informed me of a new car service named Uber that had just been brought to Seattle that I could use in place of taking a taxi or the bus. So how does it work exactly? Uber is an on-demand car service that will pick you up from wherever you are and take you anywhere you need to go in a sleek black car. Known as “everyone’s private driver,” Uber is a service that is all about convenience and style. If you’re a member of the service, then your payment is just charged to your credit card so no more fumbling at your dolla dolla bills! This service is great for a night out, but is also the safer bet in place of a taxi or bus – – as suggested by Kevin.

“In Seattle, pricing currently starts with a $7 base, plus $3.75/mile distance and $0.75/mile time fees with a $12 minimum and $50 set rate for Sea-Tac.

PBS is making a documentary that will highlight Seattle’s thriving music scene. The program titled “Seattle Music…something in the water” isn’t all that clever, but will feature some of your favorite local bands including The Head & the Heart, Shabazz Palaces, Pickwick, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a few others. The show will air on October 21st.  [Source]

– Storefront installations will be returning to Broadway this fall/winter! The last time this happened was back when I was a freshman and back then I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate it. Storefronts Seattle will take over vacant store fronts on Capitol Hill stretching from Pine Street to Roy and will be decorating them with creative and visually pleasing installations. [Source]

– Food trucks are rolling up with a sweet surprise! Street Wheels, a new hot pink truck parked on 2nd and Pine, will be dishing out their treats every day from noon-6. Their menu features a number of ice cream sandwiches, chocolate dipped ice cream bars, and a handful of your favorite classic desserts. [Source]

– After one man stiffed a bartender last week at one of my favorite bars in Capitol Hill and then criticized her weight on the receipt, the locals went nuts. Something you should learn of the day: If you’re  going to stiff a bartender, don’t pay with a credit card. Capitol Hill locals harassed the guy via his Facebook to let him know that he is just not welcome back to our neighborhood ever again. This story got around so quick, I even found out on The Frisky shortly after the incident. Read more about what happened here and here.

Alexa Chung’s “Thrift America”

I was disappointed when Alexa Chung’s MTV show was canceled earlier this year, but I knew that it would only be a matter of time before she was back in the spotlight once again. The stylish, quirky, and charismatic host will soon be returning to the tube. Why MTV decided to cancel her show? I have no idea. Big mistake.

Alexa will star in a new show called “Thrift America” to be aired on PBS in which she will travel in both the states and in Europe perusing flea markets, thrift stores, and garage sales for the best finds! She’ll be seeking out clothing, furniture, and various other items and documenting them into her own show.
