Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still

My Instagram stories told me that Portugal. The Man played a show in Seattle the other night. As a teen, they were one of my favorite bands and a band that I almost pleaded with every time to my parents that I needed to see live whenever they were around. “I know it’s a Tuesday, but they’re my favorite band ever!” – basically what I said about the 10 bands I always had on rotation. I haven’t kept up with their music since I was 18, but this song sounds so good.

Portugal. The Man’s Surprise Concert For Students

One of my favorite bands when I was a teenager gave back to a small community this week in a HUGE way and it’s just another reminder of how much I really loved being a part of the Pacific Northewest music scene. When I was younger, Portugal. The Man was the biggest band I had ever booked at the time. I was 16 then? 17? And they’re still doing great things together.

Portugal. The Man along with Stubhub and the faculty from one middle school joined together to surprise their students with not a private concert of 3 songs from the band, but also $35,000 worth of instruments for their students to use. Among these instruments that were revealed from underneath sheets were trumpets, saxophones, french horns, violins, cellos, and a few more.

“We started off playing in band as kids so it’s very important for us to be able to come back and do something,” said bassist Zachary Carothers.

I was also in my middle school’s band for four years and started when I was just 10 years old so this means a whole lot to me. This gesture from the band and everyone involved is really extraordinary. You can read more about the surprise and the details of how this happened here.

In things that do not fly…

  • London riots
  • Stealing a band’s trailer and gear

I can’t remember the last time a riot solved ANYTHING. Do you?

Secondly, I was shocked to find out yesterday that after their set at Lollapalooza, someone had stolen Portugal. The Man’s van and trailer with all of their equipment inside. It is heartbreaking to hear that especially after they had played one of their best shows at the Chicago music festival. Since Monday, the band has been asking for the public’s help in retrieving their van back slash replacing their expensive gear. The van was discovered today, but sans equipment.

Among the pieces of equipment stolen were eight guitars, an electric organ, an electric piano, numerous musical pedals, drums speakers and microphones, an iPod and a banjo, according to a list of equipment released by the band. A cost estimate for the stolen items wasn’t immediately available, but the band noted the list was incomplete.

In its tweets, the band asked that anyone who is able to should print out the list of equipment and check local pawn shops; the group can be contacted at via Twitter via @portugaltheman if anyone knows anything about the theft.

If you can imagine…the time and money that goes into purchasing this equipment, it would take years – maybe even their whole musical career to acquire it all. I can only hope that their equipment will be returned to them safely, but I am disappointed in hearing this news.

Portugal. The Man – The Bottom

I am currently watching Portugal. The Man’s set live at Lollapalooza on YouTube here as I type! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, Portugal. The Man is an electrifying group of performers out of the Northwest. I have been a fan since my junior high days and even had the opportunity to work with them back in high school when the venue I booked at was able to book them for a hearing benefit show. If you ever have a chance to see them live – take it! It will surely be a show that you will never forget as you will have an incredible time dancing along and moving to the beat of their music. I am blown away by the fact that I had the privilege of seeing them in a small venue years ago and now seeing them on the bill at Lollapalooza.

Wild Orchid Children Signs to Equal Vision Records

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Seattle band, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground. I have been watching this band perform for years and I absolutely adore their music. However, I have forgotten to mention that the guys of Kay Kay formed a second band long ago called Wild Orchid Children. The genre of music varies within the two bands, but they are talented nonetheless. Maybe you’ll like one or the other or maybe you’ll love both!

I’d like to send a huge congratulations to Wild Orchid Children today because they just signed with New York based Equal Vision Records! Former bands on the roster include: Alive in Wild Paint, Portugal. The Man, and Circa Survive. Wild Orchid Children performed at Bumbershoot this past weekend before dropping the big news this morning. They will also be releasing their first full-length album Wild Orchid Children Are Alexander Supertramp on November 9th.

The band began working on this album in spring of 2009 with Tom Pfaeffle at The Tank Studio, but went on hiatus when they learned that Tom Pfaeffle had been fatally wounded that following summer.

Let’s Talk Shows: Reviews

Last weekend, I had the chance to see a private performance from Minus the Bear at the Vera Project because they were promoting the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. I didn’t get a chance to talk about the show in a previous post because I was so pumped about meeting Suchin Pak though! My bad, sowwy!

It’s been a few years since I last saw them perform. The first time I saw them, I was w/ my best friend at Neumos on a school night. Reckless behavior. Before they got on stage, they set up plush white tigers on top of the speakers to set the mood. I can’t remember  if they were promoting Planet of Ice or if it was the album before. I do, however, remember attending  a laser show for Planet of Ice to preview the whole CD before it came out in the summer of 2007. Minus the Bear didn’t need the tigers at their recent performance though.  Since I saw them last, their sound has matured and so did they naturally. They have come a long way since Pachuca Sunrise, which is still one of my favorite songs.  There is more structure and cohesiveness apparent throughout their entire new CD Omni. For Planet of Ice, we heard bionic and futuristic sounds that different from their previous two albums. With Omni, each part within a song – intro, chorus, bridge is emphasized. They’ve also upped their game in terms of performance. This past week, they performed on Jimmy Kimmel and I couldn’t be more proud of them.

Along with a show review, I guess I’ll give you a CD review too.

Best songs:

  • My Time
  • Summer Angel
  • The Thief
  • Into the Mirror feat. Rachel Flotard of Visqueen

Portugal. The Man

Way to exceed my expectations this past Friday! It had been three years since I last saw them and even back then I had decided that they were one of the best performers I had ever seen. Not much has changed. They have been blowing up all year performing at some of the biggest names in music festivals including this year’s Coachella, Sasquatch, and Bonnaroo. They began their entrance with a thick fog emerging off the stage and into the crowd. It wasn’t long before the lasers appeared, which really got the crowd excited. [myself included]  They performed tracks from their 2010 album American Ghetto as well as last year’s The Satanic Satanist and even songs from when I first started listening to them nearly four years ago.

Portugal. The Man – Thanks for reminding me of what I have been missing from my life.

Harvest of Hope Fest

This weekend, the Harvest of Hope Fest is going down in St. Augustine, Florida. This is the first time I’m ever hearing of this festival, but they seem to have a fairly decent lineup including my favorites: Portugal. The Man, Kimya Dawson, Rogue Wave, Matt Pond PA, Kid Sister, and many more. To check out the rest of the lineup click here

All proceeds from this festival will go directly towards the Harvest of Hope Foundation, a non profit that seeks to provide both educational and emergency aid for migrant farm workers . You can buy a one-day pass or a three day pass. Just kidding you can’t buy the three day pass because the festival starts today. My bad.

Bonnaroo

What an amazing lineup. I think I like it even more than Coachella’s. Nothing beats Snoop, GIRL TALK ( I will always love)  Andrew Bird, MGMT, Of Montreal, Jenny Lewis, Santogold, The Ting Tings and Portugal. The Man. All in one place.
